Borderlands
Rated 3.5 out of 5

Artistic : 6.5 | Video : 9 | Audio : 9.5

WORK – Despite a chaotic scenario, special effects in saw teeth and heavy humour, this film adaptation of the famous video game developed by Gearbox Software is an entertaining tote where we find with pleasure the punk-apocalyptic universe of the mysterious planet Pandora, here visited by a leading casting (Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart and Jamie Lee Curtis). So to speak, it is Guardians of the Galaxy Italian post-nuke way.

IMAGE – Thanks to the Dolby Vision, the colours are bright (the desert oranges) and striking contrasts, providing additional brightness and energy to the visuals. The details are clear (even if the tip is not always ultra sharp in view of the omnipresence of the green background) and the plans benefit from remarkable clarity, allowing to better detect each site explored. However, the dark scenes can allow a slight digital noise to come.

SON – An impressive VO Dolby Atmos (although the dynamics could have gone further) where the sound effects, especially related to the shootings and motorized chases, are well distributed in the acoustic scene by a constant use of all channels. The basses are physical (cf. explosions) and the precision officiates throughout. Less extensive and immersive, the VF Dolby Digital 5.1 remains able to hunt the Ark.

WORK – Despite women's empowerment and minority representation, this 33rd MCU film in no way renews the formula Marvel. The usual tropes of superhero films are of the part, the antagonist is insufficiently developed and the adventure is not at all bold. But the action scenes are well executed, the camaraderie between the three actresses (Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris and Iman Vellani) palpable and the spectacular special effects.

IMAGE – Even if it comes from a 2K DI, this HDR10 UHD transfer benefits from a serious scaling with fine detail and excellent definition. The advantages of HDR and WCG are fully exploited, displaying beautiful colours with enriched saturation and even more pronounced contrasts (cf. scenes in space with black ink and bright stars). Energy powers blow up the nits and the HEVC compression is robust.

SON – Powerful, enveloping and with great clarity, the VO Dolby Atmos is provided with a first-rate distribution where pyrotechnic effects and environmental atmospheres allow to immerse itself in the fantastic universe of the cross planets. Dynamics capture and verticality is not lacking (spaceships). The VF Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 is neither as precise nor as broad as its consoeur, but remains well mixed with a ideally incorporated dubbing.

Rated 4.5 out of 5

Artistic : 8.5 | Video : 9.5 | Audio : 9.5

WORK – Ambitious and visually impressive, this (simplified) adaptation of Jean-Christophe Grangé's successful novel is a thrilling thriller inspired by the Hollywood model (who said Se7en ?) whose track play in the French Alps, led by a duo of unorthodox cops (Jean Reno and Vincent Cassel are excellent), is particularly haunting. However, a few bad scripts (the too spectacular outcome) squat the University of Guernon.

IMAGE – Restored in 4K from the scan of the original negatives 35 mm, the image is clearer and more detailed than in the past (the close-ups are striking). The silver texture has been subtly preserved, the new colorimetric calibration is more realistic (colder and brighter shades removed from the greenish drifts of the previous Blu-ray) and the contrasts, adroitly reinforced (increased darkness and immaculate snow), improve the readability of the broad frame.

SON – True to the 2009 edition, the soundtrack encoded in DTS-HD MA 5.1 delivers clarity and depth of every moment (especially during the avalanche). Mixing is well balanced, dialogues are clear and sound effects are long-lasting (storming). The action scenes enjoy a remarkable dynamic (motorized race-prosecution, the fight against skinheads) and the dark and anxious music of Bruno Coulais is not lacking in scope.

WORK – Directed by an Olivier Marchal who knows the environment, this big black polar in the pure tradition of the genre stages Daniel Auteuil and Gérard Depardieu, as heads of two rival police brigades, in a particularly electric face-to-face where tension is palpable, frequent twists and well developed characters (scorched). One Heat to the French worthy of this name, visually elegant and narrativeally captivating.

IMAGE – Restored from the 35 mm negatives, the 4K image is much more filmic and refined (cf. the faces) than in the past despite still a bit thick planes. The film has been cleaned, the details enhanced, and the silver grain texture pleasantly all despite its increase in low brightness. As for the restitution of colours and contrasts, it is more faithful to the sombritude of the places (the green-morose veil was turned for more realistic hues and lights).

SON – Similar to that of the previous Blu-ray (some ambiances you want) without the clipping that would fit the most muscular passages, the VF DTS-HD MA 5.1 is as wide as enveloping. Balanced and regularly supported by a strong LFE channel (in firing and explosions), it shows crystal clear accuracy even though some dialogues are sometimes less audible. Surround channels are of all scenes and the intensity of music never taken in default.

WORK – Although alchemy « Explosive » between Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman is undeniable and that irreverent humor (to the trash replicas) is at the rendezvous, this CBM of the stable Marvel It is only a cynical commercial manoeuvre to capitalize on old (now new) lucrative franchises. The unbridled bloody action substitutes for any narrative depth and the incessant blinks of eye, like the cameros, betray a dishonest fan service.

IMAGE – With impressive precision, this UHD Dolby Vision transfer offers increased sharpness with exceptional fine details (make-up, textile fibres). The SFX are well made, the more saturated colorimetric palette displays vibrating primarys (the costumes) and contrasts, carefully enhanced, improves the visibility of scenes sipped with light or plunged into the dark (it's rare) by deeper blacks and brighter whites.

SON – A stunning VO Dolby Atmos that ensures total immersion. The effects/ambiences are perfectly distributed in the acoustic space, the dynamics are particularly intense as soon as it shakes on the screen, the dialogues remain clear despite the surrounding frenzy, the electric partition is as wide as well ventilated and the basses are grandloquent. Powerful and appealing to all channels, the VF Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 ensures. The dubbing is well integrated into the original mixing.

WORK – One Silence of lambs satanic cryptic plot where Oz Perkins (Gretel & Hansel) master its oppressive atmosphere thanks to carefully composed clinical plans. The dreadful moments refuse to be easy, the tension is quickly untenable, the investigation captivates until its outcome shock and the performances are memorable (a magnetic Maika Monroe and an icy Nicolas Cage). A singular work with certain clarity that defeats the codes of the genre.

IMAGE – Captured in silver 35 mm in format 1.33 (for the 70s) and in digital 2.40 (for the 90s), the 4K image calibrated in HDR10 returns with more finesse the heterogeneity of the two epochs (cf. elegant granularity in the past). The details in the shadows gain in visibility, the softness of the light sources in authenticity and the greasy colors in richness. Despite high binary flow, a brief postrization tease the beam of a flashlight.

SON – Food with heavy horrific atmospheres and abundant low frequencies, the VO DTS-HD MA 5.1 guarantees the clarity of its dialogues. The sound effects are well distributed, the attacks violently activate the dynamic and the music composed by Zilgi (alias Elvis Perkins), marked by strident strings, contributes significantly to the sluggish pressure that oozes from the surrounding area. Balanced mixing with the acoustic design worked.

WORK – As he brilliantly revisits the nunsploitation, Michael Mohan offers Sydney Sweeney a successful blood baptism. Anxiety in his use of Judeo-Christian imagery, this picturesque religious nightmare having faith in the horror body reveals a certain uneasiness while his final girl instrumentalized by the church will gradually rebel. Less about sexuality than BenedettaThis tragedy of anticlerical horror openly denounces the (spiritual) grip of the men of power.

IMAGE – Even so much better than its counterpart 1080p, this UHD Dolby Vision transfer to the consented sweetness is not fully convincing since the organic texture affixed in post-prod comes to smooth the dusty walls of the convent (a lacunary compression). However, the contrast management is improved (more nuanced blacks), brighter light sources (candles) and the weak subtly alive colorimetric palette (red tones).

SON – An acoustic claustrophobia pregnant with poisonous atmospheres and strange music for a mix as mysterious as frightening encoded in DTS-HD MA 5.1. The immersion operates all along without abusing the surrounds, the dialogues are firmly exuded by the power plant and the bass box gladly supports the dramaturgy of a handful of sequences. The few horrific effects use dynamics skillfully.

WORK – Almost entirely in a police station where a wealthy notary is questioned by a tenacious commissioner on the evening of the New Year's Eve, this exciting psychological duel between two sacred monsters of French cinema (Michel Serrault and Lino Ventura), supported by a brilliant scenario, incisive dialogues and a rigorous staging, holds its suspense until the very last minute. A jewel of the kind policeman.

IMAGE – This new 4K restoration from the scan of the original 35 mm negative (which had enabled the return of the 1.66 format) operated in 2019 on HD media, is becoming more consistent despite a still flickering definition of this one. The copy is as clean as ever, the cold colors are released from reddish drifts (cf. carnation), the silveric texture that is more organic no longer to suffer from tingling, blacks breathe better and neon lighting benefit from increased details.

SON – Clean and balanced, this DTS-HD MA 2.0 dual mono track creates real listening comfort with a few resonances. The dialogues (partly post-synchronized due to an incompatibility between the shooting at 25 i/s and the taking of sound in 24 i/s) are of great clarity even though sometimes detached from the acoustic environment, the sound ambiences (starting with the intense rain) are energetic and the discreet score by Georges Delerue is well integrated.

WORK – Capturing the turbulence of adolescence through the eyes of a rebellious and dreamy girl (the Charlotte Gainsbourg revelation), this charming chronicle of bitter-sweet customs on farewell to childhood explores the desire for escape and disillusionment of youth with much tenderness. A delicate portrait of melancholy and hope where Claude Miller's sensitive staging gives life to a « small » deeply human history.

IMAGE – Coming to correct the sometimes pastel tones, the dew carnation and milky blacks of the previous Blu-ray, this UHD Dolby Vision transfer emanating from a 4K restoration (which rests on a scan of the original negatives 35 mm) is cute like everything. The image is as clean as it is stable, the grain well returned, solid encoding, improved details, warm colorimetry more naturally saturated and densified contrasts. But the scene around the pool suffers from burning whites.

SON – Faithfully transcribed in DTS-HD MA 2.0 dual mono, this soundtrack delivers its dialogues (most often scathing and full of verva) with as much ardour as clarity. The sound ambiences are well present, the smooth score of Alain Jomy is harmoniously integrated (like the iconic song Sarà perché ti amo Ricchi e Poveri group) and cleanliness is necessary (no breath or signs of wear) for silences to the disarming depth.

WORK – Classic of the horror of the 60s (his first representative in France) where a surgeon obsessed with the restoration of his daughter's face commits terrifying acts to achieve his goal, this macabre tale (proposed here in full version) both clinical and poetic examines the themes of identity, medical ethics and mourning while Edith Scob, a fantasy of purity in front of Georges Franju's elegant camera, delivers an upsetting performance.

IMAGE – This new 4K restoration from the original 35 mm negative corrects the errances of the Blu-ray released at Gaumont and comes to sublimate the photograph of Eugen Schüfftan. The piqué de l ́image finds its natural, the silver texture of its finesse and the high luminance of its details. The frame and brightness are no longer staggering, and the black (deeper) and white (brighter) is really (greenish coloring no longer). The shades of grey are perfectly balanced.

SON – Resumed from the 2010 edition, this monophonic soundtrack encoded in DTS-HD MA 1.0 (instead of the previous 2.0 dual mono) is very convincing despite the application of a noise reducer causing a slight compaction of mixing. But harmonious and without breath or wear and tear related to the passing times, it admirably balances the dialogues (detached with clarity), the ambiance sounds and the anxious score of Maurice Jarre.

Jungle Cruise

Artistic : 7 | Video : 9 | Audio : 9.5

WORK – At the crossoverIndiana Jones and Caribbean Pirates, this adventure inspired by Disneyland's iconic attraction is a fun and captivating blockbuster, where the alchemy between Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt brings a real touch of charm to this high-risk cruise on the Amazon River. And if the scenario remains predictable, the entertainment is travel with in its luggage spectacular special effects and action scenes rich in thrills.

IMAGE – A digital capture finalized in 4K that this UHD HDR10 transfer, without any grain, delivers with more delicacy than the Blu-ray... Even if the sharp is still a little soft (but it is intentional) and the input in definition remains negligible (a slight veil of extra sharpness). On the other hand, the amber dominant colours are richer and the contrasts, somewhat darkened, better detail the high luminances (less overexposed).

SON – Very precise and with an extended dynamic beach, the VO Dolby Atmos gives a first-rate immersion with its countless jungle atmospheres. Nature comes to life on all canals (a verticality populated by animals), James Newton Howard's adventurous score is particularly wide and dialogues are well restored. Less vigorous but valiant, the VF Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 has a successful dubbing.

WORK – Inspired by Spielberg's work, this natural horror explores the duality between man and nature « fishing » An emotional tragedy where the consequences of human acts are not without consequences. And through the characters of the orca, a person able to feel emotions, and the captain (forgiving Richard Harris), a complex and tormented man, this deliciously vintage movie at the impressive SFX navigates between revenge, guilt and redemption.

IMAGE – Made from a 4K scan of the original negative Technicolor trichrome, this UHD restoration calibrated in Dolby Vision is too heterogeneous in its granularity 35 mm (a variable DNR filter) despite a certain cleanliness (no dirt on the horizon), increased accuracy (cf. the broad planes on the small coastal town), alive cold winter colours (the blafardes have drowned) and enriched contrasts (more legible nights and brighter days).

SON – Despite the very fluctuating sound level of some noises (including voice), an inherent limitation of the source (unmodified), the VO dual mono delivers with as much precision as clarity (no breath or crack) its effects as the melancholic partition of the Maestro Ennio Morricone. Post-synchronized, Charlotte Rampling's dialogues (which provides dubbing in French) have a different stamp than those of other actors. Less homogeneous, the FV is more deaf and acute.

WORK – The third part of the trilogy initiated by X and Pearl, this conclusion below its predecessors (less originality here) continues its reflection on the Hollywood star-system, this time in the lowlands of Los Angeles of the 1980s, that of all excesses. A sexy and sexy slasher under influence (Brian De Palma, Alfred Hitchcock, Paul Schrader and Dario Argento) where Mia Goth, well surrounded (a prestigious casting), continues to shine in her quest for glory.

IMAGE – If the increase in sharpness and detail is not necessarily obvious (in the order of subtle) given the stylization summarily any stylist of the photograph (retro softness and a 16 mm granular structure added in post-prod), the colors and contrasts gain in lustre. Nights with bluish reflections are more threatening, red splashes benefit from better saturation and baroque lighting radiates more in the dark.

SON – Insufficiently aggressive (a dynamic on the reserve, including giallesque murders) and little on verticality (while many atmospheres would be lent), this VO Dolby Atmos disappoints somewhat in view of its subject. Fortunately, the urban environment is well spatialized, Tyler Bates' worrying score (as well as several hits of the time) is perfectly integrated, the dialogues are well exuded by the power station and the LFE channel is in full shape.

WORK – Despite structural weaknesses where everything is underdeveloped (starting with its characters), this post-apo survival that quickly exits monsters (whose trick would be inspired by Dingo) delivers its share of suspense as soon as they go to attack. The staging is rather visceral, the creatures are well designed (special care has been given to the design), the low budget feels little and the direction of actor is successful (a sober Nicolas Cage).

IMAGE – Well lit by day, much darker at night (too much), this 4K image with HDR10+ technology is globally fantastic. The details are impeccably clear (if the shaky cam allows), the colorimetric palette displays natural shades with bright primaries and the contrasts, suitable in spite of deliberately opaque shades, deploy solid blacks and realistic light sources (see the warm shine of candles). CGIs don't show up.

SON – A little too quiet, this soundtrack proposed in DTS-HD MA 5.1 is avarous in background noise (this is where the lack of money manifests itself). Surroundings are only solicited episodicly, mood music is discreet and effects are rare in the absence of monsters. But when the action comes, the dynamics are aggressive, threatening noises (slamming), efficient spatialization (360° displacements) and violent bass.

WORK – Today, the technical prowess (a motion shooting capture) is no longer (looks are curious and rigid animations), what remains of this Christmas story adapted from Chris Van Allsburg's famous book? An ode to magic and faith without cynicism where the digital fairytale of scenery, the various pieces of bravery and the stunning staging of Robert Zemeckis make it an attraction worthy of leisure parks. Will you take your ticket?

IMAGE – If it had to be lived in 3D, this enlivened journey takes advantage of this UHD HDR10 transfer. For while scale-up is sometimes visible (a bit of aliasing), the increased fineness of textures, the full exploitation of colors (strangely extinct in the past) and the whipping of contrasts (for a dense night and an immaculate snow), accentuate the fairytale of Don Burgess's photography whose light sources spark like never before.

SON – Large and spacious despite a surprisingly neglected rear scene in places (such as the freezing wind that clasps forward on the roof of the train), the VO DTS-HD MA 5.1 is a solid soundtrack. With a great deal of energy and clarity, it restores its effects (a 3D remix would have been welcome), its music and its dialogues, while its basses do not end up imposing it (see the arrival of the Express Pole). Even if toned at its level, the VF lossy is otherwise less precise.

WORK – Despite stereotyped characters and a highly expected intrigue, this blockbuster, emblematic disaster of the 90s, starts to pursue tornadoes without ever simmering. The concept is held from beginning to end, the action scenes take precedence over their passages, the staging is harshly effective, the special effects have pretty well aged and the casting seems to be fully invested (the alchemy between Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton is obvious). It's uncoupling!

IMAGE – A significantly increased resolution (all details are reinforced), enriched colours (under the close collaboration of Jan de Bont), careful restoration (from a 4K scan of the original 35 mm negatives and an interpositive), optimized contrasts (between darkened skies and high luminances better trimmed) and a preserved silver texture. The addition of the greenish sky, a phenomenon that betrays the arrival of a violent storm, makes sense in the scene concerned.

SON – Reference one day, reference all the time? Yes, thanks to a Dolby Atmos remix of madness that offers a just memorable acoustic experience. For at the heart of the action, with its disproportionate dynamics and its whirlwind effects (a breathtaking verticality), it deploys a dizzying immersion (hurling winds, roaring tornadoes) supported by low vehementness. Even so effective, the VF Dolby Digital 5.1 cannot support comparison.

WORK – In a spiral of confusion (several levels of penetration) and danger, intriguants Jennifer Jason Leigh and Jude Law explore the boundaries between reality and virtuality under cover of organic addiction (and body horror for spectators). A thriller of SF disconcerting with the glauque universe and the themes dear to its author, where the impulse overflows (uncontrolled desires of sex and violence) attest to the defilement of humanity.

IMAGE – Taking advantage of a clearly improved clarity and definition compared to previous editions (even though the rendering is still a bit thick due to the use of a 35 mm intervector), this UHD HDR10 transfer to the ideally encoded granularity also displays various colors at abonny saturation (if this is a carnation too hot a hair on a handful of planes) and carefully adjusted contrasts (more credible lighting). Some tremors persist.

SON – Prioritizing the front even if the rear provides sporadically small atmospheres (wildlife) and other pyrotechnic effects (fires during the final assault), the multichannel VO rhythmed by the disturbing partition of Howard Shore is more balanced than the VF 2.0 surround, more limited (in spatialization and severe) and mixed at a slightly low level. In both cases, mixing is clean (no breath and/or wear defects) and crystalline dialogues.

WORK – Enigmatic and atmospheric, this psychological thriller plunges into the depths of the confused mind of its protagonist to better explore the human psyche. Woven by a David Cronenberg (Crimes of the Future) particularly skilful and tense by Ralph Fiennes (Harry Potter) to the hallucinating gaze, this schizophrenic canvas goes back to the sons of an existence where past and present are confused, until the untenable truth is concluded. Troubled, very disturbing!

IMAGE – While it was only offered on DVD in France, this puzzle film is now available in a Blu-ray/UHD combo whose 4K restoration (used in HD in the United States by Sony), resulting from a scan of the original negative and calibrated in HDR (with the approval of chief op) is admirable. The 35 mm grain is delicate, fine details chiseled, harmonious colors (the WCG is rarely manifested in view of cold austere) and sustained contrasts.

SON – Chuchoted and falsely quiet (the oppressive atmospheres abound), this soundtrack encoded at a volume well below the reference level (prepare to mount the sound) focuses mainly on the front (where Spider's mumbles settle), leaving the surrounds to distil rare small effects (rain and chatter). A minimalism at the edge of the nightmare, at the bottom of which the introspective music benefits from a beautiful aeration.

The baroque universe with its mythical expanses is based on bluffing special effects, the space opera scenario unfolds its crazy cosmic bulimia without any compromise and the action scenes, as varied as they are energetic, enjoy an iconic staging.

IMAGE – Restored and calibrated in Dolby Vision from a 16-bit 4K scan of the original Super 35 negative, the image presented here is star. Details gain in precision (see costumes and decors), vibrance chromatic palette (more dazzling hues), scale contrasts (from the depth of blacks to the shine of reflections) and silver patina in finesse. Drawn from 2K source files, the added scenes of the Directors Cut are a thicker caulia.

SON – Exclusive to the Theatrical Cut, the new Dolby Atmos mix shows a vitality (a almost uninterrupted whirlwind of effects and/or atmospheres in the surrounds) and increased power (a palpable extension of dynamics and basses) vis-à-vis its counterpart DTS-HD MA 5.1, yet still as impressive. Moreover, the activity of air channels is particularly notable. In both cases, the dialogues are clearly exuded by the plant.

WORK – Driven by the obvious desire to please the fans of the first hour (a Pitch Black 1.5), this SF old-school B series puts us on a new inhospitable planet populated by monsters, where testosterone mercenaries will try to hunt Richard B. Riddick. Modest (a budget of 38 M$) but very generous in everything she undertakes, she is visually chiaded and delivers exciting action scenes to the applied riggings.

IMAGE – If a hand to the buttocks has voluntarily been removed and the rare saccades of the Unrated Directors Cut persist (as on The Chronicles of Riddick), this 4K restoration supervised and approved by David Twohy features more prominent details than in HD (with a refined 35 mm grain), shades with increased richness (even more amber outside and blue at the end) and contrasts precisely adjusted. Darkness increases in readability and lighting intensity.

SON – Even if less fit than that of the second opus, the VO DTS-HD MA 5.1 is no less thundering and fearlessly immersive. The voices are perfectly integrated, the frontal balance is dynamic as desired, all channels are copiously solicited, the effects are full of azimuts, Graeme Revell's music is conscientiously spatialized and the bass are formidable. In the absence of a 3D track, activation of a virtualization DSP is strongly advised.

WORK – A major film work by Luc Besson (Nikita, Dogman) having revealed the talented Natalie Portman, this dark and touching dramatic polar to the sophisticated staging, the deeply emotional scenario, the direction of remarkable actors (Jean Reno in the lead), the human characters and violent action, is a black diamond borrowed from melancholy which, in its most personal long version, significantly deepens the relationship between Leon and Mathilda.

IMAGE – Resulting from a 4K restoration from the 35 mm negatives, this UHD Dolby Vision transfer that does not exploit the master of the US edition (published by Sony in 2017) is more natural than the latter. The film texture is well preserved and the pique just as robust (the gap with the previous Blu-ray is important), but the colorimetric palette regains heat (with a predominance of yellow sepia) and the contrasts are better managed (more detailed shadows and high luminances).

SON – Balanced sound tracks and a great general clarity where the score of Eric Serra is powerfully delivered on all channels. The dialogues are clear, the front stage dynamic, precise spatial noises and muscular bass... Especially in VO, whose Dolby Atmos mixing benefits from a much more expansive listening environment (see Gunfighters) by using reflected verticality (the sound of detonations, the breath of an explosion, etc.).

WORK – If the scenario is a little windy and the secondary characters swept away by the storm, this entertainment tornado where the weather action breaks out like a quagmire, revives the flame of the blockbusters of the 90s while remaining humble. The SFX dissimilar, the new generation of storm hunters is endearing (Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell) and the intrigue at the heart of the gusts unfolds a soul supplement in its social dimension.

IMAGE – Nicely vintage in its 35 mm rendering (silver capture), this UHD Dolby Vision transfer with strong viscerality at the right time (supported by an exemplary encoding) sweeps its HD counterpart. The increased resolution benefits the details (slightly soft by nature), the colors are generously extracted from Rec. 709 (enriched primary), the granular structure breathes fully and contrasts benefit from a refined management (shadows and measured lights).

SON – Although less aggressive than its predecessor and recorded at a particularly low level (the volume will have to be increased by 14 dB to reach the reference level), the very elaborate VO Dolby Atmos blows a feeling of permanent wrapping (a tromb of activity at the back and in the heights) that culminates during tornadoes (between furious winds and deaf rumbling). The multichannel effects are cyclonic and the dynamics ardent. VF equivalent.

WORK – Famous for its final twist completely changing the perspective of history, this human drama with a funeral atmosphere wanders across the borders of life and death while redemption and reconciliation haunt the places. Bruce Willis (at the top) and Haley Joel Osment deliver exceptional performances, the staging of Shyamalan (Unbreakable) wisely diverts attention and suspense is prodigiously fantastic. A classic of the kind.

IMAGE – If the new 35 mm negative scan and HDR10 calibration reveal more distinct fine details, an enriched colorimetric palette (carnation, primary) without magenta dominant and contrasts to increased subtlety (better defined shadows and more realistic light sources), the sporadic application of a noise reducing device is somewhat disappointing... Even though the granular structure appears organically in most cases.

SON – Using a discrete multichannel activity driven by narration alone, this 5.1 soundtrack with subtle immersion reveals a dynamic range slightly enhanced in front of the previous Blu-ray. The official musical opening in finesse, the dialogues are firmly restored by the power station, the detection of off-field effects is remarkable and the low frequencies are felt well. In terms of power (see sound recording) and accuracy, the VO prevails over the VF.

WORK – At the crossroads of family drama and science fiction thriller, this intimate-scale invasion retains faith. And as convictions decline but resist, such as wheat ears swept away by the wind of the unknown, deep fears resurface in the strangeness of events. A lesson in narrative and staging, where the most sincere emotion makes us believe in the incredible side of Mel Gibson and Joaquin Phoenix. As Agent Mulder once said, I Want to Believe!

IMAGE – Presented in HDR10 from a 4K scan of 35 mm negatives, this UHD transfer delivers an enhanced resolution that is clearly visible in the background. The colorimetric palette with earthy tones sees its primarys reinforced (reds and blues), contrast management adapts better to shadows (blacks less fluctuating) as well as low ambient brightness (more distinct), and granularity is finely preserved. High lights acquire in ease (torches lamps).

SON – Audacious at the back (where out-of-field effects abound) and dotted with countless atmospheres, this 5.1 soundtrack shows crystal clearness and efficient dynamics. The memorable score of James Newton Howard (of horror arises beauty) is not lacking in scope and all benefits from the unwavering support of low frequencies. The absence of a 3D mixing is frustrating (see steps in the attic). VF of high efficiency even if less dynamic.

WORK – Very faithfully adapted from George Orwell's famous dystopical novel, this philosophical reflection questions the structures of power and gives us to reflect on the importance of individual freedom and objective truth. But while it enriches political thought, this fictional work with robotic coldness and masterful interpretation (John Hurt and Richard Burton), favours internal conflicts to better capture the oppressive essence of a totalitarian regime.

IMAGE – While the master UHD CSD MGM (used by Criterion in HD and by Capelight in UHD) from a 4K scan of the 35 mm negative was enough for himself (especially with his calibration supervised by Roger Deakins), this new restoration thought it was good to use AI. Flattering but not very natural, the image (clean and stable) by too degrained and overemphasized (even if the details remain finely resolved) nevertheless benefits from better unsaturated tones and reinforced contrasts.

SON – Even if narrowed and not very dynamic, the two dual mono VO have no real faults per se (no blasting or parasitic noises). The novlangue is clear, the rare effects (the crowd, the helicopters) come out well and the score (from Eurhythmics or Dominic Muldowney according to your selection) is harmoniously integrated. Proposed in 2.0 surround, the VF gains (a little) in spatialisation at the back but loses balance (a dubbing too prominent).

WORK – A maxi best of the saga menu Alien where the space station evokes the JV Isolation and terror in weightlessness Dead Space. But thought "in the best interest of the Company", this return to the visually chiaded sources that blow up liberalism (coming to destroy the dreams of youth), serves only to make (re)save the franchise (successfully) for whom Prometheus and CovenantYet skillfully linked to this nightmare, were only a genetic abomination.

IMAGE – Supported by a strong HEVC compression, this UHD Dolby Vision transfer regularly stands out from its HD counterpart. The increased resolution improves every detail (false organic texture included), the very orange colours generously exploit WCG technology (cf. bright reds and electric blues) and the management of contrasts, deliberately conservative in its luminous peaks, is refined for a darkness otherwise palpable.

SON – Offering an immersive as well as terrifying audio experience, the VO Dolby Atmos is engulfed in the surrounding effects and fully exploits its verticality. The spatialisation is of great precision, the tense score is voluminous and the bass reinforce the feeling of oppression. Powerful and well distributed, the VF Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 (a carefully integrated dubbing) is still much less enveloping. In your home-cinema, the Xenomorph will make you scream again!

WORK – In a future excessively asepticated kitsch where crime is eradicated and shells replace toilet paper, Sylvester Stallone and Wesley Snipes clash in an explosive ballet by Cro-Magnon where subtlety is replaced by action scenes that demolish everything and memorable punchlines. A guilty pleasure not even illegal despite the stripping humor of Sandra Bullock, whose intrigue is readily forgiven for the big calibers of our solid fellows.

IMAGE – Approved by Brambilla and solidified by first-order encoding, this 4K restoration from the original 35 mm negative retains the granular patina (more eclectical in composite designs) of Alex Thomson's eclectic photography while adding to its vibrant colours. The contrasts are more pronounced (deeper shadows and often diffused lights) and the details, with the occasional sweetness of capture, perfectly rendered.

SON – Typical of the 90s, this bourrin mixing where directional effects abound (the activity surrounds is insane) benefits from an Atmos remix that expands its field of action (without distorting it) with increased dynamics and engaging verticality. The spatialization is precise, the dialogues are clear and the comic score of Elliot Goldenthal is returned with great fidelity. An immersion every moment, DTS-HD MA 5.1 track included, even though the bass retain.

WORK – Much more than just an animated, this testamentary work by Hayao Miyazaki (its 12th long) is a deep metaphysical recollection of the nature of existence, interconnection and the quest for meaning. An introspective journey guided by mourning which, Alice in Wonderlandspread its wings (not without melancholy) in a dream world to contemplate the mysteries of life, death and the whole universe. A visually majestic and philosophically vertiginous opus.

IMAGE – Scaled from a 2K source and calibrated in Dolby Vision, this 4K image displays drawings « Old » delicate with more precision and peps than its HD counterpart. The 35 mm texture is refined, the details come to life even more, the colorimetry bursts with a great vibrance, the contrasts gain in nuances (broad blacks and reinforced light flashes) and the quality of the encoding erases all traces of shift.

SON – Mixed by the esteemed Kôji Kasamatsu, the subtle and balanced soundtrack Dolby Atmos (proposed in VO and VF) provides effects to the marked accuracy even when the dynamics shake. The voices are clear, the separation of the palpable canals, the salient rear activity, the very physical (rare) basses, the memorable verticality (wildness, weather conditions) and Joe Hisaishi's growing anxiety score. Careful, French dubbing fits perfectly.

WORK – Even though the special effects today took an old blow while they were revolutionary 35 years ago (the morphing), this magical, magical and sometimes even cruel heroic fantasy that has marked a whole generation of spectators continues to plunge us into the heart of a fabulous journey that is full of prophecies and magic, within a universe populated by improvised knights, endearing dwarfs, hilarious lutins, trolls, fairies and witches. Cultural!

IMAGE – Taken from the same 4K scan as the previous Blu-ray, this UHD Dolby Vision transfer still adjusts (even if dust persists). We gain a portion of image, the 35 mm texture is more homogeneous, the previously blurred planes benefit from greater precision (the work of an AI?), the autumn colorimetric palette calms its heat while invigorating its primarys and the contrasts, redesigned (cf. the purity of the snow), enhance the brightness of the light sources.

SON – A 5.1 soundtrack with subtle but well-active spatialization, dynamic frontal, effects-rich surrounds (the rumbling of the storm, the screaming of the dogs), bass cossues (the escape in the cart, the inflamed breath of the Eborsisk) and which to crown the whole, diffuses the enchanting music of James Horner with an enjoyable scale. With quality dubbing and less compressed than in the past, the VF remains no less strident than the VO.

WORK – On a hot topic, Audiard makes his coming out film with this transgender musical on the background of Mexican cartels dazzled by the fervour of the trio Saldana–Gascón–Gomez. And when it deals with the tragedies of Mexico (disappearances and femicides), not without allowing the female to live in exciting numbers with the great musical diversity, it is to better speak of the feminine through three portraits of women as poignant as they are bursting. To beat his heart has recovered!

IMAGE – The most beautiful film of the past year finds in this fabulous transfer UHD Dolby Vision a custom case with its composite stylized atmospheres. The precision of the contours makes a leap forward, the warm and modern colors increase in density (from flamboyant reds to soothing blues) and the contrasts, more sliced between shade and light, come to sublimate each light (from neon to starry sky) with blacks at the unheard of depth and burning whites.

SON – Undeniably making the strength of this immersive soundtrack, the out-of-standard musical universe (never decorated with the narrative, up to the lyrics of the songs) is dispensed with an eminent clarity and depth. Dialogues are clear, feverish dynamics and off-the-shelf effects give vertigo. Even though the VF DTS-HD MA 7.1 is of first order, the Spanish track Dolby Atmos is best suited for its authenticity, its verticality (very perceptible) and its increased scale.

Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
