While I regularly repatriate my old 4K Ultra HD tests before MaG, I ended up with a certain amount adopting a format more than light. In fact, rather than abandoning them in the limbos of the web, I had the idea of creating this section. And then, this Bazar isn't there to replace my longer and more detailed articles. Good reading!

A review of the myth tense against the background of domestic violence that hides nothing in UHD. The image benefits from an improvement in the sharpness and depth of the blacks despite the presence in low light of a little noise. The soundtrack is always suitable with what is needed for energy, depth and height effects (reserved for 3D mixing).

Adapted from a cult comic book, this fantasy and friendly deviant adventure film reaches us in Ultra-HD 4K for the first time ever in the world. The very bright UHD master magnifies the photograph of the work by preserving its delicate silver texture and bringing out a flicker of details. The soundtrack ensures the « show » thanks to the assurance of its dynamics and the great clarity of its mixing.

Format 2.35 – DI 4K – Dolby Vision | English DTS-HD MA 5.1 – French DTS-HD MA 2.0
Artistic : 7.5 | Video : 9 | Audio : 8.5

The cult kitschissime of 80s to consume without moderation in Ultra HD Blu-ray. Drawn from a new 4K scan, the image allows a rediscovery of the work with otherwise more intense colors, expanded contrasts and a significant gain in definition. If the rear is limited, the sound dispenses a beautiful aeration of the front and a certain musical wrap.

Akira (1988)

Source Japan | Publisher : Bandai Visual | Release date : 24 April 2020
Format 1.85 – DI 4K – HDR10 | Japanese and English Dolby TrueHD 5.1 – Japanese LPCM 2.0
Artistic : 8 | Video : 6 | Audio : 6.5

Dedicated to the altar of the cyberpunk, this cult Japanese animated film unfolds its fury in restored version 4K. However, despite a 16-bit 5K scan and regularly demonstrative light sources, the image is a little overdyed with visible use of DNR. And this is hardly better on the audio side where the present remix presents a not always happy equalization as well as a sometimes invading background breath.

Scooby!

Format 2.39 – DI 2K – HDR10+ | English DTS-HD MA 5.1 (STFR)

Entertainment addressed to the whole family, this return to the sources that operates a digital lift in the age of time and uses the folklore Hanna-Barbera benefits from a UBD that will put you full of eyes and ears. The image is just perfect with bright lights and extremely attractive colors. The audio track sounds particularly good and captures every opportunity to use all the channels.

This new adaptation of Hugh Lofting's novels is a hair and feather adventure for the little ones, which takes Downey's arch inside of a top-quality 4K Ultra HD. The image of a remarkable sharpness is full of vitality with colors of deep richness. The soundtrack is solid with dynamic action and fully enveloping atmospheres.

This fantastic comedy with a truly unique style comes out of its grave thanks to this UBD that gives it a new life. The new 4K transfer looks incredible with irresistible colors, new details and a wonderfully filmic look. The new Atmos track is exciting with effects « Strange » balanced on all sides.

Format 2.39 – DI 2K – Dolby Vision | English Dolby Atmos – French Dolby Digital 5.1
Artistic : 7 | Video : 10 | Audio : 10

A cool and trendy blockbuster boosted to spectacular action scenes, where the most famous comic strip reptiles grow a big « Cowabunga » for this 4K Ultra HD competition edition. Impressive, the image delivers a sharp piqué like a blade, a tidal wave of colours and formidable contrasts. Overvitamined and physical, the Atmos blend uses 100% of the listening space.

Sherlock Holmes (2009)

Sherlock Holmes (2009)

Source France | Publisher : Warner Bros. | Release date : 09 September 2020
Format 1.78 – DI 2K – HDR10 | English DTS-HD MA 5.1 – French Dolby Digital 5.1
Artistic : 7.5 | Video : 8 | Audio : 9.5

Flanking a UBD to which nothing escapes, this blockbuster rock, which modernises and removes successfully the work of Arthur Conan Doyle, leads the investigation. If the image definition is almost unchanged, the HDR makes all the difference with a less dilapidated desaturated colorimetry and intensified light sources. And despite the lack of upgrades, the soundtrack remains powerful with a superb separation of canals and nice descents into the grave.

Sherlock Holmes: Shadow game

Sherlock Holmes: Shadow game

Source France | Publisher : Warner Bros. | Release date : 09 September 2020
Format 2.40 – DI 2K – HDR10 | English DTS-HD MA 5.1 – French Dolby Digital 5.1
Artistic : 7.5 | Video : 8.5 | Audio : 9.5

From the ultra-fun baroque and visually crazy even more fun in Ultra HD Blu-ray. The image provides more visible fine details, better definition of shadows and brighter lighting. Even if unchanged, the sound remains devilishly enjoyable with a dantish spatialization which has stopped over-solicitation with an efficiency that friezes all the speakers.

Format 2.40 – DI 2K – HDR10 | English Dolby Atmos – French (Parisian) Dolby Digital 5.1
Artistic : 6.5 | Video : 9 | Audio : 9.5

Fretic and hilarious, this police comedy adapted from the cult series of the 80-90s offers the services of a high-end UBD. The image that gains sharpness pays for the otherwise more dynamic colour services and an unprecedented shine. The new 3D soundtrack is expressive with a certain surround engagement.

Space Adventure Cobra

Space Adventure Cobra

Source United States | Publisher : Discotek Media | Release date : 26 November 2019
Format 1.85 – DI 4K – HDR10 | Japanese DTS-HD MA 5.1 – English LPCM 2.0
Artistic : 7.5 | Video : 7 | Audio : 7

This classic vintage Japanese animation travels in space within a valiant Ultra HD Blu-ray. Coming from a real 4K scan, the image is unfortunately artificially smoothed but benefits from the HDR blind so that the colorimetric palette is even more psychedelic. Overall satisfying despite some saturation, the sound is well balanced with robust sounds.

The White House Fall

The White House Fall

Source Germany | Publisher : Leonine Films | Release date : 25 September 2020
Format 2.40 – DI 2K – HDR10 | English and German DTS-HD MA 5.1
Artistic : 7 | Video : 4 | Audio : 9.5

This B series of roundly conducted action does not want to negotiate with the present 4K Ultra HD... And I understand it easily! It must be said that the image is tampered with on all sides with what includes DNR, EE and HDR in autopilot. Fortunately, the mixing which is deliberately oversized is as imposing as it is explosive.

London Falls

London Falls

Source Germany | Publisher : Leonine Films | Release date : 25 September 2020
Format 2.39 – DI 2K – HDR10 | English DTS-HD MA 7.1 – German DTS-HD MA 5.1
Artistic : 7 | Video : 6 | Audio : 9.5

Stuffed with spectacular attacks, this B-series of overflight and reactionary 80-s sauce can hardly rely on UBD to protect world leaders! Because little aided by a UHD transfer more than medium that uses coarse fireworks (DNR, EE and automated HDR), it only has the possibility to take refuge with a frantic soundtrack with pyrotechnic effects ardently distributed in space.

District 9

District 9

Source United States | Publisher : Sony Pictures | Release date : 13 October 2020
Format 1.85 – DI 2K – HDR10 | English Dolby Atmos – French (Quebec) Dolby Digital 5.1
Artistic : 9 | Video : 9.5 | Audio : 10

A skillful metaphor for apartheid, this ambitious science fiction fable is an unidentified film object that accuses the presence of an exemplary 4K Ultra HD. The image pushes the source (inserts « documentary » included) in its cuts with increased clarity and more nuanced colours/lights. Atmos mixing is a real demo track with phenomenal spatialization and striking dynamics.

The House near the cemetery

The House near the cemetery

Source United States | Publisher : Blue Undergound | Release date : 25 August 2020
Format 2.35 – DI 4K – Dolby Vision | English Dolby Atmos – English DTS-HD MA 5.1 – English and Italian DTS-HD MA 1.0 (STFR)
Artistic : 6.5 | Video : 9 | Audio : 8.5

A grim atmosphere and blood flow are the guests of this oppressive Italian horror film of the 1980s, which settles very comfortably on the UBD format. In 4K, the recent restoration more strongly restores the organic appearance of the work while balancing better the dark and/or luminous areas of the frame. Even if frontal due to its original nature, the new Atmos track, which is of great clarity (despite a slight breath of it) adds intensity to its mono pendant.

New York Ripper

New York Ripper

Source United States | Publisher : Blue Undergound | Release date : 25 August 2020
Format 2.39 – DI 4K – Dolby Vision | English Dolby Atmos – English DTS-HD MA 5.1 – English and Italian DTS-HD MA 1.0 – French (Parisian) Dolby Digital 1.0
Artistic : 7 | Video : 9.5 | Audio : 9

Between eroticism and sadism, this putassier giallo that smells good is even more glaucous in 4K Ultra HD. The image displays with incredible sharpness and splashes the screen with amazing colors. The new Atmos mix, if it does not deny its monophonic origin, gives a better dynamic while sometimes venturing on the heights (see the overflight of a helicopter).

Requiem for a Dream

Requiem for a Dream

Source United States | Publisher : Lionsgate Films | Release date : 13 October 2020
Format 1.85 – DI 4K – Dolby Vision | English Dolby Atmos
Artistic : 9.5 | Video : 9 | Audio : 10

Put to the devastating pilon of the American dream, this dramatic blow-of-poing that deals with addictions without concession, finds in this UBD the most ambitious format to carry to the nudes its powerful images (voluntaryly heterogeneous with more palpable details, more visceral decomposed hues and more clumsy lighting) and its impetuous sound design (an excellent mixing Atmos where dynamics and height effects are very engaged).

Showgirls

Showgirls

Source Germany | Publisher : Capelight Pictures | Release date : 30 October 2020
Format 2.35 – DI 4K – HDR10+ | English and German DTS-HD MA 5.1
Artistic : 8 | Video : 6 | Audio : 9

This sulfurous work signed by Paul Verhoeven is ready to do anything to succeed in his passage on UBD support... Open the curtain! Taken from the 4K restoration carried out by Pathé in 2015, the image, now ultra-shinky, has undergone a large facade ravage (a DNR lift and outrageous makeup) to appear as brilliant (HDR pushed to max) as Gina Gershon's lipstick. Very « Las Vegas style » In short, but with little respect for its Argentinian origins (wherein the rating attributed), this transformation is finally quite well suited to the universe « fake » pictured here. Bubbling even if not mixed in 3D for the occasion, the soundtrack that « Dog » releases what is needed of power and spatialization so that never stops the show.

Force of Nature

Force of Nature

Source Germany | Publisher : Splendid Film | Release date : 09 October 2020
Format 2.39 – DI 2K – CSD | English and German DTS-HD MA 5.1
Artistic : 4 | Video : 8 | Audio : 8

Despite a solid distribution, this trivial and imaginative B series that dreamed of a category 5 hurricane is just a small storm of nothing at all. Leaving in the rain the HDR techno, this 4K SDR transfer still improves the depth of the beautiful image (solid definition, rich colors and supported contrasts) returned by the Blu-ray. Thank the codec HEVC! As for the sound, convincing but sheltered from the slightest acoustic madness, it permeates the speakers of the violent storm that roared outside.

Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
