While I regularly repatriate my old 4K Ultra HD tests before MaG, I ended up with a certain amount adopting a format more than light. In fact, rather than abandoning them in the limbos of the web, I had the idea of creating this section. And then, this Bazar isn't there to replace my longer and more detailed articles. Good reading!

If he cannot boast of being a masterpiece like Your Name., this animated film still remains a beautiful jewel filled with emotions. And with a seamless UHD Dolby Vision digital transfer (details of exceptional clarity, reinforced contrasts, bolder colorimetric palette, and exacerbated lighting) and a live soundtrack (beautiful channel separation, palpable effects/ambiences all along), the present 4K Ultra HD does not take water.

Universal fable that will enchant young and old, this exciting and moving journey is even more incredible on 4K Ultra HD support. Even if the visual gap is tenuous, the image refines the already superb rendering of its HD counterpart (moderate improvement of details, expanded colorimetric spectrum and enhanced light sources). Not very vigorous (well thin and low dynamics lacking body), soundtrack « Dolby Atmouse » However, it remains immersive as possible (see the atmospheres of South America).

The evil Weekends of Count Zaroff

The evil Weekends of Count Zaroff

Source France | Publisher : The Smoker Cat | Release date : 31 July 2020
Format 1.66 – DI 4K – CSD | French and English DTS-HD MA 2.0
Artistic : 5 | Video : 7 | Audio : 6

From the horrific-erotic bis cinema to the disturbing atmosphere that, for the first time in the world, offers an unexpected setting with this Ultra HD Blu-ray. Completely restored in 4K by the publisher from the original negative, the granular image displays with limits (hairs on the edge of the frame, a fluctuating definition, blacks a little bluish sometimes and some tingling), certainly due to the material allocated, but remains in the end of certain quality (details of great clarity, brightness to the beautiful fixed and bluffing colors). Very well balanced and rather ardent when the acoustic scene demands it, the soundtrack nevertheless suffers from a more or less audible breath and sometimes even saturation.

The Tax Collector

Format 1.85 – DI 2K – CSD | English DTS-HD MA 5.1
Artistic : 6 | Video : 8 | Audio : 9

Ambitious but without nuances, this bloody mafia thriller with a disturbing Shia LaBeouf collects the qualities of a 4K Ultra HD yet deprived of the benefits of HDR. Even though modest, the few improvements made by this UHD CSD transfer (refined details) add to the superb image of the HD master (high definition accuracy, very good color saturation and perfect contrast control). With a high dynamic range, the soundtrack pays for careful spatialization, rather powerful pyrotechnic effects and a physical urban score.

Serpico

Serpico

Source France | Publisher : Studiocanal | Release date : 18 November 2020
Format 1.85 – DI 4K – Dolby Vision | English and French LPCM 2.0
Artistic : 9 | Video : 9 | Audio : 7.5

Classic of the 70s polar that immortalizes the virtuous New York policeman Frank Serpico as a metamorphosed Al Pacino, this great film is published for the first time in a restored 4K version. Demanding in all areas, the UHD Dolby Vision transfer recovers a fullness of details, revives colors (new colors) until then extinct (there's not just gray in life!) and rests on contrasts finally functional during dark scenes. Even though sometimes loud (in VO), mixing benefits from nourished atmospheres (not VF).

The Three Days of the Condor

The Three Days of the Condor

Source France | Publisher : Studiocanal | Release date : 18 November 2020
Format 2.35 – DI 4K – Dolby Vision | English DTS-HD MA 5.1 – English and French LPCM 2.0
Artistic : 8 | Video : 9 | Audio : 8

Classic paranoid cinema of the 1970s, this political thriller is to rediscover all ceasing affairs in UBD. New flame in its new 4K restoration, the image shows a clear improvement in detail, a more massade colorimetric palette with new welcome cyan hues, and amplified contrasts. Wider and more transparent, the VO LPCM 2.0 (VF too matte) is to be preferred over mixing DTS-HD MA 5.1... which lacks dynamism and hardly uses surrounds.

The Hate

The Hate

Source France | Publisher : Studiocanal | Release date : 25 November 2020
Format 1.85 – DI 4K – Dolby Vision | French DTS-HD MA 5.1 – French DTS-HD MA 2.0
Artistic : 9 | Video : 10 | Audio : 9

A great pessimistic social drama about the anger and frustration that gnaws the young people of the Banlieues, this horrificly topical cult film offers a 4K restoration (from the original negative 35 mm) for its 25th anniversary. More realistic than ever thanks to a sublimated black and white (see the exemplary management of contrasts), the image is as beautiful as possible (immaculate copy, sharp definition, nuanced light sources and solid compression). Spatied with delicacy (the atmospheres invite to the back with parsimony), the multichannel soundtrack benefits from a very significant dynamic (the DJ set at its window) when events come to demand it.

Chernobyl

Chernobyl

Source France | Publisher : Warner Bros. | Release date : 25 November 2020
Format 2.00 – DI 4K – Dolby Vision | English DTS-HD MA 5.1 – French SDR 5.1
Artistic : 8.5 | Video : 8.5 | Audio : 8.5

This very realistic mini-series with a heavy atmosphere, which is critical of the Soviet state's post-crash management of Chernobyl, sees its nuclear nightmare reinforced in 4K Ultra HD. If the definition and palette of colours (still dull) are only improved subtly (it is finally the grain added in post-prod that increases in visibility), the encoding Dolby Vision accentuates no matter what happens the perception of details in shadows (omnipresent). Even if the dynamics burst into the key passages, this soundtrack remains of great delicacy. Essentially interlogged and covered with an anxiety score, it only surrounds for some occasional environmental atmospheres.

Source United States | Publisher : Well Go USA | Release date : 24 November 2020
Format 2.39 – DI 2K – Dolby Vision | Korean Dolby Atmos – English DTS HD-MA 5.1
Artistic : 7 | Video : 9.5 | Audio : 9.5

Transferred « Mad Maxienne » In zombie territory, this series B bourrine enthrones as much as possible its writing too summary by a shovel of frenetic action scenes. Powered by stylized visuals, digital images are « affected » by the superior quality of UHD encoding Dolby Vision (increased resolution, notable increase in details, more expressive colours, fortified contrasts and supercharged lighting). The excellent Dolby Atmos soundtrack, which has energy to resell regularly engages all the channels and uses a freely disturbing LFE channel.

Format 2.40 – DI 4K – HDR10+ | English and German DTS-HD MA 5.1
Artistic : 7 | Video : 8.5 | Audio : 8

Direct (but unofficial) follow-up of Braveheart, this modest production is an intimate medieval drama (not a warrior epic) with strong cinematography. With its fine granularity and colours « sad » The image with good details respects the winter atmosphere of the work... especially as the snow is brighter than ever (a little too often) thanks to solid contrasts and bold HDR10+ encoding. Subtil and reserved, audio mixing modestly expands the frontal space even though it has realistic environmental atmospheres and serious more than correct.

Today (2019)

Format 2.39 – DI 4K – HDR10+ | English Dolby Atmos – French Dolby Digital Plus 7.1
Artistic : 7 | Video : 8 | Audio : 9

Feel good movie assumed that exploits the mythical songs of the Beatles, this pudic musical ride that makes good reached the top of the charts in UBD. Natural and little demonstrative (generally reserved light sources), the image is not very different from that delivered by the Blu-ray if it is on the side of sharpness (a digital 8K capture supervised in 4K for the intermediate master) where the leap forward jumps to the eyes... Like the presence of this one, even so much less than in HD, of a parasitic video noise. Clear and engaging, the soundtrack pleases all the speakers and shows energy « rock » in concert scenes.

Format 2.39 – DI 2K – Dolby Vision | English DTS-HD MA 5.1 – French (Parisian) Dolby Digital 5.1
Artistic : 9 | Video : 8.5 | Audio : 9

Stylish and fearful twilight staged with great virtuosity, this taxi race where everything doesn't necessarily go as planned subtly improves its performance in 4K Ultra HD. Reproducing with more finesse the granular aspect of the work and the night light of Los Angeles, the image makes the cold colors better vibrate, maximizes the details during close-up and perfects the contrasts (cf. coaly blacks). Realistic, dynamic (the detonation of firearms) and a great thoroughness in the diffusion of its urban atmospheres, this excellent mixing (and its atypical lyrico-melancolic score) remains the same as on the Blu-ray.

Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence

Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence

Source Japan | Publisher : Walt Disney Records | Release date : 22 June 2018
Format 1.78 – DI 4K – HDR10+ | Japanese DTS:X – Japanese DTS-HD MA 2.0
Artistic : 8 | Video : 4 | Audio : 9.5

Disturbing sensory experience, this sinuous cyberpolar decided to investigate in 4K Ultra HD... Was that really a good idea? Despite a high video bitrate of 90 Mb/s on average and increased brightness, the image seems impenetrable. Far from highlighting the enchanting beauty of the work, it has been « handled » very clumsy for a result as coarse as incoherent. Cleaned without restraint then artificially sharpened (while the Blu-ray displays more details!), the intentional softness of the planes is now covered with a thick layer of post-DNR noise that does not resemble in any way the pretty granular texture that once did the source. Fortunately, the DTS:X soundtrack is fantastic. Large and enveloping (good use of height channels), it is an excellent remixing.

The Beverly Hills Flic

The Beverly Hills Flic

Source United States | Publisher : Paramount Pictures | Release date : 1 December 2020
Format 1.78 – DI 4K – Dolby Vision | English DTS-HD MA 5.1 – French (Parisian) Dolby Digital 2.0
Artistic : 7 | Video : 8 | Audio : 6

A star film of the 80s produced by the Bruckheimer stable and worn by stage beast Eddie Murphy, this entertainment with pronounced coolness today benefits from a 4K restoration. Despite the use of light filtering that can soften the frame (as when Maitland goes to the art gallery), the image remains homogeneous with a faithful silver grain. Perfectly cleaned, it is also better solved than in HD. But as often, it is the Dolby Vision encoding that marks points by bringing depth to the dark planes, accentuating the shine of the Californian sun and densifying the saturation of colors. Not upgraded, the soundtrack (aged) is very uneven. Neither always clear (sometimes there is breath) nor necessarily adequate in volume distribution, it is rather confused on the ground in addition to being moderately active at the back. However, the LFE channel is striking and some scenes manage to detach themselves from the ambient softness... While Harold Faltermeyer's mythical score is still as catchy.

Tremors

Tremors

Source United States | Publisher : Arrow Films | Release date : 15 December 2020
Format 1.85 – DI 4K – Dolby Vision | English DTS-HD MA 5.1, DTS-HD MA 4.0 and DTS-HD MA 2.0
Artistic : 7 | Video : 9 | Audio : 8

Small horrific production very friendly having acquired late status as a cult film, this tasty series B that one would believe straight out of the 50s arises from land in UBD. Drawn from the original negative and approved by the director and his opioid leader, the native 4K image retains its silver texture and proves to be more detailed, colorful, contrasting (blacks are superb) and luminous than ever. Enjoying a nice front separation and some « attacks » At the rear, the DTS-HD MA 5.1 track does not forget the dynamic (satisfactory) and the « tremor » (rather correct) bass.

The Doorman

The Doorman

Source Germany | Publisher : Splendid Film | Release date : 27 November 2020
Format 2.39 – DI 2K – CSD | English and German DTS-HD MA 5.1
Artistic : 6 | Video : 8 | Audio : 8

Home unpretentious invasion rhythmized by a few fulgurances of staging, this good B-series pötite pays for the services of a 4K Ultra HD rather well prepared... Even if the same standard, or almost the same, as the Blu-ray! Without HDR, however, the image avoids the noisy passages of its HD counterpart. For the rest, we are dealing with firm details, warm colors and consistent contrasts. Dismissed from its original Dolby Atmos mixing, the soundtrack lacks some power (dynamic and weighted bass) but does the job correctly (good spatialization together).

Greenland – Last refuge

Greenland – Last refuge

Source : Sweden | Publisher : SF Studios | Release date : 14 December 2020
Format 2.38 – DI 2K – HDR10 | English DTS-HD MA 5.1
Artistic : 8 | Video : 9 | Audio : 9.5

This disaster film film filmed at the height of men where emotion prevails over destruction, presents the world's upheaval through a Scandinavian 4K Ultra HD. Superbly defined (the false silver texture is more visible) and taking advantage of reinforced contrasts (nocturnal sequences profit from it), the image impresses all the more as the colorimetric palette that bathes in more burning hues (cf. the orange filter in the last straight line) is associated with more burning light sources. Equipped with accomplished spatialization and a burning dynamic, the soundtrack is unfortunately deprived of the Dolby Atmos mix (where it is literally the flood!) reserved for the French Blu-ray.

Mom, I missed the plane!

Mom, I missed the plane!

Source United States | Publisher : 20th Century Studios | Release date : 15 September 2020
Format 1.85 – DI 4K – HDR10 | English DTS-HD MA 5.1 – French (Parisian) Dolby Digital 5.1
Artistic : 7.5 | Video : 8.5 | Audio : 7.5

Christmas film cult for a whole generation, this family comedy full of fun and good feelings invites us, for its thirty years, to come « partying » at home on UHD support. Restored in 4K for the occasion, the image that is sharper and brighter benefits from a preserved 35 mm grain (despite the manipulations of this one), details of greater finesse, colors found (see the vitality of the primary), adjusted contrasts (higher blacks) and otherwise more natural lighting (light of the day in mind). Similar to that of the previous Blu-ray, the soundtrack does not perform any miracle (especially the choked and cavernous VF)... Even though the VO is quite robust with a mischievous surround activity and a well-ventilated score (from the immense composer John Williams).

3615 Santa Claus Code

Source United States | Publisher : Vinegar Syndrome | Release date : 24 November 2020
Format 1.85 – DI 4K – HDR10 | French (Parisian) DTS-HD MA 2.0
Artistic : 7 | Video : 9 | Audio : 8

Home Invasion very dark though inspired by Amblin's productions, this French genre film with a very present suspense and the directed work comes out of oblivion in 4K Ultra HD. Drawn from the original negative 35 mm, the restoration offers copious details (while keeping the grain and a certain cinematic softness), vibrant colors (cf. greens and reds), numb contrasts and reflections of a beautiful shine (as on the snow or with the car headlights). Apart from voices sometimes stifled, this mix remains distinct with player effects, a wide score and threatening percussion.

Vigilante (1983)

Source United States | Publisher : Blue Underground | Release date : 15 December 2020
Format 2.39 – DI 4K – Dolby Vision | English Dolby Atmos – Anglais DTS-HD MA 5.1 et DTS-HD MA 2.0 – Français (parisien) Dolby Digital 2.0
Artistic : 7 | Video : 9.5 | Audio : 8.5

Urban Thriller striking moving in a city gang-ridden by violence and gangs, this watchful movie « neighbourhoods » Dark in cold revenge in UBD. Restoration 16-bit 4K requires, image is an astonishment of every moment... So that the stability of the frame, the finest details, saturation as well as the nuances of the colorimetric palette, the depth of contrasts, and the richness of lighting (see natural lights) are simply exceptional. Punchy and very dynamic, mixing Dolby Atmos sometimes drowns the dialogues under a deluge of sound effects... In contrast to the stereo soundtrack where they remain clear despite a much smaller overall scope.

Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia

I preferred on screen to welcome the page of the "Wolf cinema" which I revisit from time to time. Bravo for the work then and the work now, the physical support deserves to be defended, supported, explained, tested, promoted, criticized if necessary by intellectually honest and passionate people like you.
