WORK – Space Robinsons
In transit through the M-344/G system, the Hunter Gratzner is hit by a meteorite and crashes onto an unknown planet. While the few survivors try to organize themselves in a dry, perpetual day climate dominated by three suns, they discover that an eclipse will soon hit the planet, allowing monstrous night creatures to hunt...
Ingenious SF work with indisputable know-how, this devilishly effective B series where anxiety goes crescendo is transcended by the magnetic presence of its anti-hero « animal » Richard B. Riddick, the Dominic Toretto of space that will have rendered Vin Diesel « Bankable » Hollywood.
IMAGE – Hostile planet
From a scan of the original 35 mm negatives, this 4K restoration supervised by director David Twohy has already resulted in a UHD Dolby Vision transfer in 2020 via Arrow Video (which I had tested with another editor). Starting from the same master's degree, Turbine Medien now offers us his own version, which differs little from that of his colleague.
The image that has more punch than that of its counterpart 1080p SDR always benefits from a noticeable increase in the pique (the sweat beads on the bodies, the filthy clothes, the desert landscapes), still soaks in enriched colours (the golden, blue icebergs and phosphorescent green filters are better saturated), and also exploits the chandelier brought by the HDR (the increased brightness of the three suns) thanks to otherwise brighter contrasts (blacks without background and brighter whites) where the extreme stylization of the photograph is accentuated without losing elements of the frame (cf. the darkest scenes).
But taking advantage of a more solid encoding and giving back to the hold the DNR used by the British publisher, it is distinguished by a more authentic silver texture and slightly more refined details (sandy soils).
SON – In the dark, we hear you screaming!
Although not as fiery as most modern mixes (which is explained by a moderate budget) by less explosive (but competent) dynamics and more contained bass (but deep if necessary), this very enveloping Dolby Atmos soundtrack (a Turbine Medien exclusivity) remains attractive.
The dialogues are clear, the rears are full of activity, the environmental atmospheres are always well placed and the aerial stratum, perfectly suitable (the bombardment of meteorites, the safety alarm, the overflight of the swarm, the blast of the torches, the rain), clearly widens the sound field.
CONCLUSION – The dangers of darkness
While our small group of survivors are trying to survive the night on this unknown planet, it may well be that the present 4K Ultra HD brings him the light he desperately needs!
