Repatriation point of old 4K Ultra HD tests for this new Bazar number, only new. It has to be said that the outings are beginning to rush around the world, the support having finally found its cruising rhythm since its publication in early 2016. In fact, it became impossible for me to keep pace... This is why some discs will now be tested in a smaller form in the Bazar. But don't worry, my longer and more detailed articles will continue to be published as if nothing happened (The Host and The Fifth Element come soon). Good reading.

Is there a cop to save the queen?

When Inspector Harry (who shoots everything that moves) is teamed up with the trio ZAZ (Zucker, Abrahams and Zucker), the American cop show is benevolently parodyed in a classic of absurd adapted from the series Squad Police. And while the late Leslie Nielsen I'm so excited about it as a gaff policeman, timeless burlesque gags and no sense of genius are flying. Did you say worship? The 4K Ultra HD edited by Paramount uses the existing soundtracks of the 2011 Blu-ray. Wider than the monophonic VF (at the demounting dubbing), the multichannel VO benefits from a good general clarity (fire shots, gym and stadium atmospheres) with some effects (the landing of the aircraft just after the beginning credits). The official frontal immersion (the surround activity is very discreet), the music is well spaced and the dialogues are fully centered. Made out of a new 4K restoration (from a scan of the original 35 mm negatives) and calibrated in Dolby Vision, the admirably cleaned and encoded image (no compressive problem occurs during viewing) disappoints a little when it uses a clearly visible digital treatment (softness due to the moderate use of DNR) while it enchants the rest of the time (in 80% of cases) with its robust granular structure, its otherwise more precise details (Frank Drebin's funny frimousse, Jane Spencer's elegant outfits), its solidified colorimetric palette (see the increased vivacity of the primary) to the healthier carnation, its reinforced contrasts (a pleasantly deep black and wonderfully pure whites) and its bright sources with unprecedented splint (light of the day, the explosion of the fireworks shop). Like the dwarf in front of the urinal, this edition had to set the bar very high!

Previous to a huge buzz, this production The Asylum to the concept as stupid as improbable based on disproportionate tornadoes filled with hungry sharks is surprisingly well kept his promises, and simmers like a cartoonesque nanar dreadfully fun where the WTF scenes (the sharks that swim between cars, the hero who kills the squales with a revolver while they are in the air and cuts one in two with the help of a chainsaw, the rescue of the children on the bus, the shark-marteau that crushes a passerby, the final with the helicopter) never devoid of blood, the enthusiastic actors, the questionable special effects and the false rigolo connections (the water level is never the same, the sky passes from one plan to the other from clear to covered, the vehicles circulate in the background as if nothing were ever) will fill the snags and/or the curious. For this edition 10th anniversary named « Re-issue » (with an additional five minutes of « More Sharks » and « More Nado »), the studio had its SDR... Scan 4K, CGI reworked in this resolution and recalibrated from A to Z by its director. The details are in fact more fine than in the past, the SFX low budget much better defined, the contrasts clearly enhanced and the colorimetric palette now warm curiously pimping (while it was neutral and tristunette on the previous Blu-ray). As for the aliasing and color banding which were far too visible on some rigged planes, there is only a small handle left (certainly those inherent in the source). The VO DTS-HD MA 5.1, which is fairly balanced and clear in view of its small character, has intelligible voices, a well spaced front stage, precise effects (water movements, thunder location), regular surround activity (beating rain, shark movement) and expressive bass. Oh Hell Yeah, this junk food is swirling like never before to celebrate her preadolescence!

Adapted from the eponymous comic book, this opportunistic meeting of SOS Ghosts and Men in Black creates a fantastic, rhythmic and eye-catching comedy rich in strenuous action scenes, supernatural creatures, spectacular special effects (some ostensible) and amusing replicas (even if low ceiling). With hindsight and despite its ghost scenario, this anachronistic buddy movie (of old school packed with a square of visual modernism) led by a shock tandem (Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges) proves to be a very friendly entertainment where fun aligns the bastos. Already magnificent in 2013 when it was released in Blu-ray, this varnished image benefits ten years later from a substantial UHD HDR10 upgrade. With a constant and perfectly resolute clarity, it deploys details to the increased accuracy (face pores, buildings in the background), a colorimetric palette filled with even more life (primitives are explosive) and beautifully adjusted contrasts (blacks are of a different density and more striking whites) that reinforce the impact of light sources (such as flames or halogen tubes in the RIPD premises). Dynamic and immersive sound tracks (all the speakers are at the party) to precise spatialization, devastating effects (fires), to the very busy rear scene (it « spit » (composed by Christophe Beck) electrifying. And if the little VF DTS 5.1 really does not lack verve, do you say that the VO DTS:X is just MONSTRUEUOUS with its tenfold intensity and its agitated verticality (often related to the presence of « crevices »). With this very demonstrative 4K Ultra HD, this fantastic distraction deserves to be rehabilitated!

Mr. Jack's strange Christmas

Mr. Jack's strange Christmas

Source France | Publisher : Disney | Release date : 04 October 2023
Format 1.67 – DI 4K – HDR10 | English DTS-HD MA 7.1 – French Dolby Digital 5.1

First feature film to exploit the technique of stop-motion, Mr. Jack's strange Christmas of the Henry Selick is a macabre and poetic tale of incredible originality (thanks to the imagination of Tim Burton), which makes the magical world of Christmas intersect and The terrifying world of Halloween in the form of a pseudo musical (the soundtrack of the great Danny Elfman is mythical) dotted amazing creatures (the cult character of Jack). And for its 30th anniversary, this beautiful Christmas tale that comes off the beaten track has benefited from a 4K Ultra HD release worthy of praise... If this is on the VF side, much less fished than in the past (the DTS of the previous Blu-ray has left room for Dolby Digital) and wiping stifled voices. Bewitching despite shy bass, the VO DTS-HD MA 7.1 successfully puts on the rendering of the songs and generously exploits the rear scene (unlike the most frontal VF) to fully immerse us in this strange carnival where funeral atmospheres spread from everywhere. Consolidated by an impeccable encoding (the ambient fog is not soiled), this UHD HDR10 transfer (from a 4K restoration from a scan of the negatives 35 mm) benefits from the photo as joyful (Christmas Town) as it is from Halloween Town. Pete Kozachik (Starship Troopers). The boundaries of Rec. 709 are exceeded as soon as the colors appear on the screen (the multicolored universe of the elves is even more festive), the contrasts are reinforced when the autumn gray is there (see the shade of the blacks) and the lights, diffused most of the time, enjoy a new dynamic (the Christmas garlands, the incursions into the oogie Boogie's window). Sweet by nature, however, the piqué gains in palpability (the texture of puppets is more detailed) and the silver patina, organic to wish, breathes much better than in HD. What do I see? What do I see? A magical edition! What do I see? A fantastic purchase!

If she misses her subject (a slave trying to get out of her master's grip), this comedy gore where Nicolas Cage funnyly cabotine in the Prince of Darkness remains a friendly bleeder bis to the staging by the eye and the Cartoonesque action, which brings new blood to the myth of Dracula, this vampirical pervert eager for power. Better encoded than on the Blu-ray (it itself stronger than that of Universal) with a still attenuated digital noise (even if slightly present in places), the image of this UHD Dolby Vision transfer presents an undeniably increased resolution with much finer details than in HD (wrinkles, texture of decors, uniforms of the Police), judiciously adjusted contrasts (the presentation is a little darker), a colorimetric palette that is more vibrant (including reds, blues and greens) with a clean appearance (greenish drifts bit the dust), and much more energetic light sources (candles, vehicle headlights, night lighting, etc.) with higher luminances better crapped (the clouds). Return of Dolby Atmos mixing operated in the rooms (against DTS-HD MA 7.1 on the Universal cake) for a noisy VO like hell. The dynamics are devastating, the dialogues are very clear, the spatialization is ultra-immersive with a busy rear scene (the effects sound wildly when there is action) and verticality in the sharp senses (the thunder, the fauna, the magic circles, some shootings), the LFE channel is in active support and the rock score ‘n Marco Beltrami is returned with magnitude. Missing blood? Not with this evilly successful 4K Ultra HD edition!

When Buffy against vampires Meeting Xena the warrior in the 18th century cardboard-paste Romania with a casting (unreal for such a production) stunned by boredom and a director (the film director) Uwe Boll) which only bears the name, this gives an adaptation of nanardesque video game to the possible « stained » a totally free gore and dotted with scenes with abyssal nullity. Remains the (real) beauty of Kristanna Loken... And the 4K restoration (approved by the « director ») from the original negatives 35 mm despite a cleanliness leaving really to be desired (white dots and other dirt abound on the master). The level of definition benefits from a serious leap forward (many details are revealed), the silver texture that gains in finesse breathes better, the colors under ochre filter appear richer (blood spills), the contrast rate is higher (for dark scenes with better readability) and the light sources display a brand new ardour (torches, reflections on blades). An effective and surprisingly accurate soundtrack at dynamic peaks, pronounced surround activity, well balanced bass and enveloping (totally forgetable) music. It doesn't mean that the voices are out of control (did I say that the actors seem to get fucked all the way?) and that the sound design remains brief. If the Dhampirs are unfortunately not a legend in live action (reconnect your controllers instead), let's admit that they have better look on UHD support!

If his telefilm staging (is there a director the aircraft?) it really prevents taking off, this air lock-up post-24 driven by a duo of actors in weightlessness (the sparkling Rachel McAdams and ice Cillian Murphy) avoids forced landing due to its well-tired (sustaining) scenario and its (ground) beating drum action. Moreover, he deserved better than an eco-class trip for his ultra-high definition (this is also his debut in Blu-ray format that I use for this comparison)... Because not content with his still hideous photo (the shades are flat) despite the contribution of the WCG (a slight improvement of colors such as the red reflections in Lisa's hair and the blue-green ocean), he is victim of an attack by DNR coming to depress certain details (the broad planes are softened) and freeze part of its silver granularity. Nevertheless, more clearly than its HD counterpart (see faces), this UHD Dolby Vision transfer better controls its contrast value (blacks are thicker and whites purer) and its light sources (lighting sieved in the aircraft corridors). Extremely immersive as soon as it stirs (turbulations) and has an excellent response on the side of the basses (the jet engines, the explosion of the hotel room), these soundtracks with the very good dynamics (the take-off phase) deliver particularly efficient spatialization (ambient chatter and the noise of the powertrains envelop the listener), well-priorised dialogues on the power station and a widely engaged partition. Sometimes bad things (digital tripoling) happen to good people (an honest thriller making coffee)!

Not equal in any way the classic animation of 1989 (despite an opportune ecological discourse) of which he is the remake live-action and drowns in good feelings, this timeless emancipation story led by Rob Marshall regains its fins as soon as the musical gives way (and that ofHalle Bailey is very beautiful)... It does not matter, however, that aquatic special effects regularly take water (not Avatar: The Waterway who wants). And under the ocean, that's little to say that the A/V performances of the Ultra HD 4K disc do not raze. Beautiful, the UHD HDR10 image sprinkled with a light digital grain added in post-prod (more visible on the surface) overflows with details and colors. The level of definition does not loosen the pressure, the feeling of pique is even more marked than in 1080p (including in the depths), the additional nuances of the colorimetric palette are elegant (of course the blue-green, but also the purple that bathes the sea witch's antre) in addition to adding heat to the seabed and coldness to the shore, the contrast ratio has been carefully adjusted so that the dark scenes gain in relief (the sequence of the lagoon) and the high luminances in precision (the clouds, the rays of the sun crossing the depths of the ocean), and light sources such as the fluorescent tentacles of Ursula show a completely different shine. Having an engaging Dolby Atmos track (it's a pleasure from Disney), the VO provides a sound experience as powerful as it is immersive (the storm is memorable). The dynamic and bass are fully released, the underwater sound design shakes at the back as in the heights, the score is generously spatialized (THE star of mixing) and the voices that like to wander around in the acoustic space are rendered with great clarity.
