While I regularly repatriate my old 4K Ultra HD tests before MaG, I ended up with a certain amount adopting a format more than light. In fact, rather than abandoning them in the limbos of the web, I had the idea of creating this section. And then, this Bazar isn't there to replace my longer and more detailed articles. Good reading!

3h10 for Yuma (2007)

3h10 for Yuma (2007)

Source United States | Publisher : Lionsgate Films | Release date : 02 May 2017
Format 2.40 – DI 2K – HDR10 | English DTS:X – French (Quebec) Dolby Digital 2.0
Artistic : 8 | Video : 6.5 | Audio : 9.5

In the great tradition of the genre (the emblematic figures are there), this remake of the classic of the 50s is a beautiful contemporary western in the realistic Far West (reconstitution is impressive), powerful staging, dense characters (intrigue engines), continuous adventures and feverish gunfights. If the reproduction of colors and contrasts is more consistent than on Blu-ray, the definition as the piqué is below! The use of DNR (reduced grain) and the application of EE (sometimes coarse contour) is probably not foreign. But the shades are more natural (a harsher rendering) and less stylized (not just orange), the brighter image with more intense lighting (sun, flames) and more blinding reflections (snow), and the more penetrating blacks. A VO DTS:X ultra-cut and precise where the richness of the atmospheres, the directivity of the effects, the resonance of the shots, the presence of the high channels (voices, debris) and the roaring of the bass (the train) are great. The stereo VF (!) gets dezingued on all sides.

Allies (2016)

Allies (2016)

Source France | Publisher : Paramount Pictures | Release date : 04 April 2017
Format 2.40 – DI 4K – HDR10 | English DTS-HD MA 5.1 – French Dolby Digital 5.1
Artistic : 7.5 | Video : 10 | Audio : 9

This luxurious historical melodrama worn by two glamorous actors is a large nostalgic Romanesque fresco of the cinema of the 40s. The reconstitution is sumptuous, the virtuoso staging and the long-standing adventures. A UHD HDR10 transfer to the incredible definition, ultra-revelator details (its counterpart 1080p is squarely soft to side), to the beautiful colorimetric palette (Technicolor way), dense contrasts and abyssal blacks. The colours are more saturated (green) and deep (brown), the whites are more radiant, the shadows are better graduated and therefore more nuanced, the brighter light sources gain in realism and the clouds are better designed. Claire, precise and powerful, the VO HD wraps under the atmospheres, effects and music in a perfectly balanced multi-channel whirlpool (space superbe). The VF SD remains honorable but proves to be much less extensive and detailed.

Battleship

Battleship

Source United States | Publisher : Universal Pictures | Release date : 17 January 2017
Format 2.40 – DI 2K – HDR10 | English DTS:X – French (Quebec) DTS 5.1
Artistic : 7 | Video : 9.5 | Audio : 10

Highly spectacular, perfectly calibrated and led beating drum, this SF actuator uncomplexed in the vein of the saga Transformers is a blockbuster of mass destruction carried away by a tsunami of special effects. A grandiose UHD transfer to greater clarity, more organic details, more complex textures, more balanced saturated colorimetric palette, much more advanced contrasts and better maintained blacks. What about HDR10 and WCG technologies? More vitality on the light side, more vivacity on colours (blue sky, orange mechanical balls), more radiation with lighting and more shine on metallic and/or liquid surfaces. A DTS:X VO dazzle with a vibrant dynamic, persuasive scope, spectacular spatialization, ultra-efficient surrounds, a very active aerial scene, an enveloping heroic score and devastating bass. As for the VF lossy, it is quickly touched before being cast.

Deepwater (2016)

Source : Canada | Publisher : Elevation Pictures | Release date : 10 January 2017
Format 2.40 – DI 2K – HDR10 | English Dolby Atmos – French (Quebec) Dolby Digital 5.1
Artistic : 7.5 | Video : 8.5 | Audio : 10

This unsurpassed disaster film, which goes back to the biggest oil disaster in history, is a haunting human drama to realistic reconstruction, ordinary heroes and striking pyrotechnic fury. If this is an underwater introduction to visible solarization, there is nothing to blame for this UHD transfer more sharp than his HD colleague. Refined details, subtle textures, rich colors and fantastic contrasts are therefore output. The tones are more nuanced, the whites brighter, the sun more dazzling, the brighter reflections, the flames otherwise more alive, the more detailed shadows and the dark scenes much deeper. A dynamic, active and immersive VO Atmos that correctly uses all the speakers to create an ultra-credible atmospheric bubble (explosions, sludge discharge, debris fall). On the side, the FV is on a diet.

Inferno (2016)

Source France | Publisher : Sony Pictures | Release date : 15 March 2017
Format 1.85 – DI 2K – HDR10 | English Dolby Atmos – French Dolby Digital 5.1
Artistic : 7 | Video : 9.5 | Audio : 9.5

Enigmes captivating, playful track play, incessant chase races, international plot and multiple twists/traces for this esoteric thriller rich in suspense. A very honest entertainment. A master without fail, a definition at the top, much more complex details than in HD (skin grains, clothing fiber, architecture of buildings), refined natural colors and really good contrasts. The colorimetric palette is deeper (red) and nuanced (earthy hues), the blacks that are stronger no longer close the shadows, the reflections (bodywork) are brighter and the lighting is much more dynamic. Powerful and immersive soundtracks, much more in Atmos with striking aerial sounds (Langdon hallucinations and drone passages), where effects/ambiences and music are well distributed.

Jack Teacher: Never Go Back

Source France | Publisher : Paramount Pictures | Release date : 28 February 2017
Format 2.39 – DI 2K – HDR10 | English Dolby Atmos – French Dolby Digital 5.1
Artistic : 7 | Video : 9 | Audio : 9

This less radical muscled polar (Jack Reacher has been humanly enriched) although just as effective as his eldest, is an entertainment of action certainly classic but perfectly calibrated where Tom Cruise ensures a strong and emotional side. A sublime UHD transfer with a refined silver texture (35 mm film), firm definition, complex details (the Blu-ray looks smooth on the side), impressive richness in colours and remarkable contrasts. The shades are more saturated (green), energetic (blue) and naturally warm (skin), brighter whites, richer and deeper blacks (darker scenes more nuanced), and brighter lighting. The removed VF defends itself very well but cannot fight against the VO Atmos which offers increased dynamics, other dimensionality (the contribution of the height channels), effects more inside and more powerful bass.

This punitive expedition that revitalises the action cinema is a comicbookesque B series that delights at the possible heart of which the returning Keanu Reeves, more badass than ever, descends to all-va an incalculable number of bad guys during dantesque shootings with fracasing choreographies (the gun-kata). A controlled UHD transfer that delivers details of formidable accuracy (significant improvement vis-à-vis the BD), fantastic colours (box passage), tempered steel contrasts and generous blacks. The images are brighter (brighter light sources and sparkling metallic reflections), more intense colours (reds), more realistic skin hues and more legible shadows. Invigorating dynamics, attractive spatialization, well-washed atmospheres at the back and in height (rain, glass break), petaradant ballistic effects, enveloping score and overpowering bass (infra-basses of madness at 76′) for a voo Dolby Atmos that disperses. Unfortunately for VF, there is not only her dog that she lost!

The Girl of the Train

The Girl of the Train

Source United States | Publisher : Universal Pictures | Release date : 17 January 2017
Format 1.85 – DI 2K – HDR10 | English DTS:X – French (Quebec) DTS 5.1
Artistic : 8 | Video : 8 | Audio : 8

Haunted by a Emily Blunt convincing (and moving), this manipulative matrimonial thriller with dramatic springs is a well-losed adaptation of the bestseller of English Paula Hawkins. A UHD transfer to the discreet silver texture (low grain), stable definition, salient details (a little firmer than in HD), careful color calibration and serious contrasts. The photograph also appears as more sinister (despite brighter light sources) with a darker image and more reserved colours (many more nuanced in fact), which is rather well suited to the work. The dialogues are clear, the spatialisation is subtle, the atmospheres (the nature) and the effects (the train) are returned with a lot of realism, and the score (discreet but inspired) of Danny Elfman is enveloping.

Labyrinth

Source United Kingdom | Publisher : Sony Pictures | Release date : 19 September 2016
Format 2.39 – DI 4K – HDR10 | English Dolby Atmos – French (Parisian) Dolby Digital 5.1
Artistic : 7.5 | Video : 8 | Audio : 8.5

Interpreted by Jennifer Connelly Candid and one David Bowie eccentric, Labyrinth is an initiatory journey that lacks neither magic nor inventiveness and whose craft of the graphic universe makes clearly dream. This UHD service provides more details but also brighter colours, more realistic brightness and more pronounced black management. In return, the image is even more granular and there are small drops. A beautiful and never aggressive light, this sparkling VO uses atmospheres (rain), Atmos effects (the thunder and the glimmers of Ludo) and bass (the cleaners' machine) with know-how. The VF voices are off.

Format 2.40 – DI 4K – HDR10 | English and French Dolby Atmos and DTS-HD MA 5.1

Inventive and purely magical, this ingenious spin-off of the saga Harry Potter taking place in the nicely reconstituted New York of the 20s, is a thrilling adventure filled with wonderful creatures and amazing SFX. Between an exceptional definition, more/precised details than in HD (a few planes in withdrawal), a colorimetric palette of a dizzying richness and stinging contrasts, this UHD transfer close to perfect perfection just hallucinating... Especially as the colors are more alive and better saturated (the green of the Botruc, the blues of the Occamy), the dark scenes clearly more visible and the power of the lights multiplied (the shine of the jewels). A festival of effects released within an ultra-immersive mix with dreadful dynamics, crazy spatialization (the aerial passages of the bird-tonnerre), magical atmospheres, wide score and titanium bass (eruptive).

Format 2.39 – DI 2K – HDR10 | English Dolby Atmos – French Dolby Digital 5.1
Artistic : 7 | Video : 10 | Audio : 10

Weared by an irreproachable interracial casting, this angry yet uninnovative remake of the classic of the 60s is a western respectful of the codes of the genre to the careful staging and the vitamined gunfights (the final is overwhelming). An exemplary UHD HDR10 transfer with palpable relief, sharp piqué (the 1080p is soft to side), sublime close-ups, abundant colours, invincible contrasts, good-looking blacks and bewitching silver grain. The colorimetric palette is more saturated (hoter shades) and nuanced (green grass), the blue sky more illuminated, the sun more overwhelming (attention to tanning), the counter-days more perceptible and the stars brighter. Dynamic and hyper-immersive, Atmos mixing is a must of all time. The location is ultra-precise (the position of the shooters), enveloping atmospheres (wind), powerful shots and striking bass. Relegated to simple Dolby Digital 5.1, the VF only makes figuration.

This strange encounter between the X-Men and The Addams Family is a fairy tale about difference in the universe « particular » original, haletating adventures, touching freaks and rejoicing creative frenzy. A masterful definition, details of very high precision (a gain in obvious finesse compared to 1080p), striking depth of field (nothing to do with HD), various flattering colors and very strong contrasts. The shades gain in vitality (the vegetation of the garden, the seabed), the light sources are much brighter (several exterior planes are blinding) and the dark scenes are much better cut. A dynamic and immersive VO Atmos (the placement of effects is always wise) where music (majest) and (rich) atmospheres occupy the space without discontinuing. The small VF non HD is also a very good level.

This thriller of anticipation about genetic manipulation and its dangers is a series B horrific to mastered staging, heavy atmosphere and mysterious scenario centered on ambiguous relationships between characters. A solid definition, significantly improved details (the close-ups are very impressive), a considerable depth of field (the forest), a skillful colorimetric palette, remarkable contrasts and abyssal blacks. The colors are more toned and deliver new tones (the pale/silver face of Morgan), natural (the reflections of the sun) or artificial (the neons) lights are much brighter, and the shadows gain in information. Always immersive (on the outside as well as inside) thanks to sound effects that are awry parsed (the fauna and flora of nature, the oppressive atmosphere of the laboratory) and deliver clear dialogues, this mix ensures (in VO as in VF).

Ben Affleck, under the guise of an autistic killer-accounter, carries with his imposing carrure this paranoid thriller with intense suspense, judiciously alarmed narrative, brutal action scenes and striking staging. A transfer to the top definition, to the details and grain (35 mm) more visible than in HD (despite a rather soft pique), to the deliberately somewhat dull colors, to the well balanced contrasts and to the very deep blacks (too often). The primary colors are brighter even if limited, the brighter whites, the more nuanced grey scale, the reflections (bodywork and weapons) brighter and the more noticeable brightness. A VO with impressive dynamics, loquace spatialization, very realistic effects/ambiences, superactive rear scene, enveloping score and persuasive bass. The VF non HD provides almost as much.

Format 2.40 – DI 2K – HDR10 | English and French Dolby Atmos
Artistic : 6.5 | Video : 9.5 | Audio : 9.5

A sense of show, grandiose scenery, a fast pace, well-feeling historical stakes and sexy actors for a great summer adventure that an excess of digital and a script overcame a little. Luminous (even at night), well contrasted and very detailed (higher than in 1080p), this UHD HDR10 transfer to the striking depth of field and luxuriant colors is remarkable. The shades are even more green or brownish, the brighter whites, the more intense sunlight in the jungle, the more intense lighting (campfire, daylight) and the more precise dark scenes. Between the grace of jungle rustling, the efficiency of pyrotechnic effects, the continuous use of surrounds, the support of the height channels, the width of the score and the firmness of the basses, these Atmos tracks are exquisite.

Format 2.40 – DI 2K – HDR10 | English DTS-HD MA 5.1 – French (Parisian) DTS 5.1
Artistic : 8 | Video : 9.5 | Audio : 9

A just historical drama without complacency on the edifying subject (the slave segregation of the 1830s in the USA), very harsh scenes, inhabited actors and lyric-fierous staging. An angry cry! The definition is excellent, the details are meticulous (more clarity and precision than in HD), the colorimetric palette is ultra-worked, the contrasts are titanium and the blacks are perfectly managed. The colors are clearly enhanced (green grass is no longer dull and the American night never grey slate), the flames are much warmer, the sun is much more overwhelming and the scenes are not brighter. The dialogues are clean, the general dynamic is removed, the spatialization is enveloping (the dreamlike sounds of nature invade the sound space), the score is expanded at the back and the bass invite in the final battle.

Format 2.40 – DI 2K – HDR10 | English DTS:X – French (Quebec) Dolby Digital 5.1

This thriller retracing (camera with fists) the Boston Marathon bombing with a striking realism (the urban guerrilla scene is of incredible intensity) carries to the nudes of ordinary heroes certainly meritorious. A visually appealing UHD master at high definition (increased output compared to HD transfer), sharper details (more information than in 1080p), natural colorimetric palette and powerful contrasts. The brightness of light sources is greatly enhanced (sunrise, gyrophars), the richness of the colors is better reproduced (yellow of the safety vests) and the darkness of the dark scenes increases in visibility. An extremely efficient DTS:X mixing with energetic dynamics, carefully placed effects (the helicopters on the airways), living atmospheres (the crowd), ethereal enveloping score and solid bass. The VF that has no fishing can never keep pace.

This major film work that plunges into the horror of war with a unleashing of violence to the hallucinating realism, is a formidable fable on pacifism orchestrated by an extraordinary director. A UHD master with exceptional clarity, clear definition, remarkable details, subtle monochrome (brown/green) colours, perfect contrasts and color banding (unlike Blu-ray). The colorimetric palette is much richer (darker blood and bluer sky) and nuanced (the uniforms), more dazzling brightness (the sun's rays and explosions) and dark scenes benefit from more penetrating blacks. Between incredibly immersive effects (balls) and ambiences (cries) (the falling of debris), a thundering dynamic and robust basses, it is at the heart of the battle that we project this visceral Atmos mixing. Dark as possible, the VF remains hidden far behind enemy lines.

Even so talkative, this anti-war drama carried by an experimental staging and performed by a young actor who dies on screen, offers us an interesting and ruthless reflection on heroism and its media exploitation. Well helped by the pace of 60fps which greatly improves fluidity, this UHD HDR10 hyper-defined transfer, detailed (significant increase vis-à-vis HD image), colorful and contrasting is perfectly surreal. The colorimetric palette is more nuanced and better saturated, the whites more petant, the scenes in low light more discernable thanks to darker blacks and the brighter lighting (the projectors of the stadium). A rich acoustic experience that literally swallows the listener several times (the announcements and crowd of the stadium, the performance of the half-time and the military operation), with a presence and energy of striking realism. Remaining in the stands, VF is not at the heart of the event.

War Dogs

Artistic : 8 | Video : 8 | Audio : 8.5

Between Lord of War and Wall Street Wolf, here is a dramatic comedy kidnapped and cynical on the American war machine, irradiated by the insolent talent of Jonah Hill and Miles Teller. A very defined luminous UHD master (many more than in HD during dark scenes), colorful (hot to wish except in Albania) and contrasting. Between a much more varied colorimetric palette, sharper contrasts, much brighter lighting (light of day is dazzling) and denser blacks, the HDR/WCG input is simply considerable. Some plans (less than ten) nevertheless suffer from a rather pronounced granularity. A mix with formidable dynamics and generous spatialization where the score is large and the least small effect diffused with great precision at the back and front. Dialogues a little deaf in VO but VF flatter.

Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
