While I regularly repatriate my old 4K Ultra HD tests before MaG, I ended up with a certain amount adopting a format more than light. In fact, rather than abandoning them in the limbos of the web, I had the idea of creating this section. And then, this Bazar isn't there to replace my longer and more detailed articles. Good reading!

Assassin's Creed (2016)

Format 2.39 – DI 4K – HDR10 | English Dolby Atmos – French Dolby Digital 5.1
Artistic : 7 | Video : 9 | Audio : 10

Despite an intrigue that will appear arduous to the neophytes and already seen to the connoisseurs of the franchise, this faithful and spectacular adaptation of the famous videoludic license has a powerful visual universe, a dizzying staging, bluffing action scenes and a four-star casting (Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons, Charlotte Rampling). More faithful (realistic colors, dusty texture, optimal contrast and very dark planes) and precise (the hall of lAdam Arkapaw. The colorimetric palette is also more subtle and wide (sepia shades), more sparkling whites, more beautiful and legible counter-days, more intense lights (fluorescent bulbs) and details in much better revealed shadows. Tingling dynamics, superbly distributed effects (the arrows fly over the room), subtly reproduced ambiance (the crowded streets) and palpable bass, for an explosive and immersive Atmos (very good VF) track.

A fantastic epic over the top as inventive as it is hollow (the stakes are simplistic) with disproportionate staging, superb artistic direction (despite an overdose of CGI), epic seat scenes, charismatic actors (Jing Tian and to the dreadful bestiary. Simplistic but very spectacular! Despite two trams, this HDR10 UHD transfer is a small wonder of optimal clarity, extraordinary definition, ultra-perceptible details (it's less clear in HD), magnificent colors and prodigious contrasts. The shades are brighter (the armors of the Order Without Name) and deep (the emerald green of the Taoties), the increased brightness delivers more dynamic lighting (the sunny exteriors) and the blacks are better cut. A sound maelström of all time with dantesque dynamics, dense effects/ambiences, hyperactive surrounds, ubiquitous aerial scene (arrows, creatures, etc.), fishy score and low impact.

Format 2.40 – DI 2K – HDR10 | English and French Dolby Atmos

Wink and shovel references on the evolution of the star of DC stables, twisting trash dialogues and gags, overexcited action scenes and impressive animation, are the pop and meta ingredients of this lively happy brothel. No softness or artifact here, just Perfection! The clarity is at the top, the ultra-pointed piqué makes appear until the smallest detail (the wear of the bricks), the colorimetric palette is a permanent fireworks and the contrasts are wah!!! The colours are bolder (the yellow heads, the red in the Batcave), the sources of much brighter lights (heat of flames, intensity of explosions and light of Batman's eyes) and the more saturated blacks. Accurate and balanced Atmos mixes (despite the circles that are a little too wise) with clear voices, nuanced atmospheres, fun effects (piupio during shooting), a wide heroic score and low punches.

First Contact

Source France | Publisher : Sony Pictures | Release date : 12 April 2017
Format 2.39 – DI 2K – HDR10 | English DTS-HD MA 7.1 – French Dolby Digital 5.1
Artistic : 9 | Video : 9 | Audio : 9

Between 2001, Space Odyssey and Third type meetings, this drama of SF intimate with the upsetting humanist character and the dizzying philosophical reflection, is a sensory experience as delicate as intelligent. The precision of the pitch, the accuracy of the definition, the sobriety of the cold colors, the melancholy of the contrasts and the infinite abyss of the blacks are perfectly reproduced by this UHD transfer. Next door, the Blu-ray is flat and bland! While maintaining the disenchanted appearance of the work, the HDR10 brings depth to the colors (orange), warms the skins, accentuates the brightness of light sources (neons) and darkens the blacks without masking the details. The sound is clearly a character of the film and mixing does justice to it with ultra-immersive spatialization, dialogues with variable perception, strange alien sounds, a very organic score and dark bass.

In the skin of an ordinary hero facing an extraordinary event, Tom Hanks (all sobriety) excels; where Clint Eastwood This heroic figure has a narrative modesty and an amazing technical strength. The clarity is ideal, the exemplary definition, the sharpness of a rare precision (the fine details are much more refined than in HD), the natural cold colours (action takes place in winter) and the impeccable contrasts. Thanks to the HDR10, the colorimetric palette is much better, the solar brightness increased (very visible in the cockpit), natural or artificial lighting (in the hotel in particular) brighter, and the more robust blacks (a real gain for depth). Both retained (the commission of inquiry) and demonstrative (theft), this Atmos blending of striking realism uses all the channels (those of height are very solicited) to project us into the heart of the disaster (hard bass).

The Return

The Return

Source France | Publisher : 20th Century Fox | Release date : 1 July 2016
Format 2.39 – DI 4K – HDR10 | English DTS-HD MA 7.1 – French SDR 5.1
Artistic : 9 | Video : 10 | Audio : 9.5

This wild odyssey in an indomitable nature is a quest for visceral revenge supported by an actor at the summit and a filmmaker in a state of grace. A truly exceptional HDR10 UHD transfer that delivers hyper-realistic images thanks to an imposing definition, an incredible dive (details more corsed than in HD), natural colors, fabulous contrasts and dense blacks. The shades are more subtle (green) and slightly warmer (less sterile whites), counter-days sipped with more light, sun and brighter flames, brighter reflections (water) and deeper shadows. A very immersive VO where the sounds of nature (the rustling of the trees, the flow of the river, the blizzard) and the music of ambience are of clarity and a multichannel presence of every moment. The VF is also very good.

All on stage

All on stage

Source France | Publisher : Universal Pictures | Release date : 30 May 2017
Format 1.85 – DI 2K – HDR10 | English and French Dolby Atmos
Artistic : 7.5 | Video : 8 | Audio : 9.5

Colourful characters, eclectic tubes and an inventive scenario full of humor, for a great show of technically neat animation that revisits the codes of musical comedy with tenderness and mischievousness. This UHD transfer is just perfect (a flawless encoding) and delivers a top definition, a pique of accomplished precision (even if the difference with the BD remains minimal), shimmering colors and solid contrasts. But despite more luxurious (red) and bright (blue) hues, brighter whites and metallic reflections, more intense spots and richer blacks, the gain brought by the HDR/WCG duo remains surprisingly small vis-à-vis the CSD. Dynamic Atmos tracks, well distributed and malignant finesse. The voices are clear, the atmospheres/effects sneak from one speaker to another (including height) and the music scene is ultra-large. A total immersion!

xXx: Reactivated

xXx: Reactivated

Source France | Publisher : Paramount Pictures | Release date : 30 May 2017
Format 2.40 – DI 2K – HDR10 | English Dolby Atmos – French Dolby Digital 5.1
Artistic : 6 | Video : 8.5 | Audio : 9.5

Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
