- The Bazaar of 4K Ultra HD, volu ...
While I regularly repatriate my previous 4K Ultra HD tests before MaG, I ended up with a certain amount without any advice on the work. In fact, rather than abandoning them in the limbos of the web, I thought the Bazar would be the perfect section to welcome them... With for the occasion, a modification of the layout. Good reading!

IMAGE – This UHD transfer from a brand new 4K scan greatly improves Blu-ray images. More sharp and perfectly detailed (see textures) for planes with greater stability and greater clarity, they are further fed by a warmer and deeper colorimetric palette (blues), bolder contrasts (the incredible depth of blacks) and much more intense lighting (the luminous lights of the dashboards). And if the grain is omnipresent, Super 35 format requires, it is returned with great finesse thanks to a titanium compression.
SON – Reference one day, reference all the time? To this question, mixing the work can answer a big YES! Presented today in Dolby Atmos (in VO), he flies for the podium without forcing too much. Far from being shy, he uses all the speakers at his disposal to immerse us in the narrow corridors of the United States Air Force. The dynamics are explosive, the spatialisation is ultra-enveloping, the surround scene is balanced, the shots burst from all sides (and resonate well above our heads), the turboreactors of the combat aircraft are decoupling, the carling is working everywhere (including the ceiling), Jerry Goldsmith's martial score is wide and regularly increases height, the basses are very physical and the dialogues are of great clarity. A top demo indisputable... Even in VF(Q) where the sound design efficiency of the 90s persists, at least horizontally.

IMAGE – A world separates this 4K presentation from its HD counterpart. From the fineness of the grain (it is coarse on the Blu-ray) to the considerable increase of the details, to the new subtlety of the colors, the increased strength of the contrasts and the unprecedented intensity of the lights, there is no photo !
SON – An unexpected Atmos track with energetic dynamics, well-active surround channels, a coherent aerial scene (the resonance of voices and various atmospheres) even if discreet and with a wide score.

IMAGE – A very high level despite the stealth of color banding, this Ultra HD transfer first has a significant gain in detail without betraying the digital nature of the many CGIs that are well connected to real shots. Next, the HDR / WCG combo allows light sources to gain in intensity (reflections on vehicle costumes and bodywork, daylight and lab lighting), contrasts to assert more efficiently (blacks are richer and brighter peaks) and colors to be more aggressively saturated (see sequences in the quantum world) while maintaining a natural appearance of the most beautiful effect.
SON – Even if the VO Atmos could have sounded even better, it already used more efficiently the air component (the movements of the Wasp and the trips in the quantum world for the most notable) which was unfortunately limited on the latest productions Marvel. However, even if the dynamics are less in retreat than usual and the bass really roar when the narrative demands it, there was still a margin when we hear the difference in competition (which said Lionsgate and Sony ?); But there's progress because it's big now. As for the rest, the dialogues are clear and the spatialization amusing with effects/ambiences well placed in the acoustic space. For the fans of the VF, just know that it is much more flat and less powerful, even if the sound design is preserved and the rear scene is also active.

IMAGE – The increase in details is non-existent, the colors are barely more saturated, the contrasts remain medium during the dark scenes (the last straight line of the film with its blacks in the shallow depth), the light sources are not much more penetrated (a little outside and not at all inside) and the faults of compression of the Blu-ray remain (the tinglings in the drain pipes). This is certainly not bad because the qualities of HD transfer are still there (top definition, clarity of all moments and realistic colors), but it is clearly insufficient for an Ultra HD 4K.
SON – Sophisticated without being notable, this soundtrack constantly caught up in reality delivers enveloping atmospheres (wind, birds and road traffic), amazing effects (such as shots), a destabilizing John Carpenter score and clear dialogues.

IMAGE – The Blu-ray is already excellent, so the improvements made by this 4K Ultra HD are light but present. The sharpness of the planes is increased, the details are more precise, the colors are more intense, the contrasts are even more remarkable, the dark scenes are better cut and the light sources appear as brighter.
SON – Despite an initial volume that is somewhat weak and a serious lack of respondents, the VO Atmos is more dynamic than the last batch made in Disney. The effects/ambiences are well integrated for maximum immersion, the top scene boosts the action scenes and the score goes without counting. Valiant, the VF is a little more « felted ».
Rhythmed by orchestral music with new age/ethnic sounds by James Horner, the soundtrack Dolby Atmos (only on the VO), who does not suffer from the syndrome « Atmouse » (too regularly encountered at Disney) but still needs to push the volume to fully enjoy it, spells out more than a recovery... Especially as it stands out from the previous mix DTS-HD MA 5.1 by its seat in the bottom of the spectrum and its vertical dimension. Perfectly balanced and taking advantage of an unplanned dynamic, it delivers a lively listening to the ultra-enveloping sound field (the atmospheres of the jungle) where the full potential of surrounds and height channels (see the Banshee back flight) seems to be reached. The plant exudes the dialogues with great clarity and the LFE channel gives real weight to many passages (deforestation, the destruction of the Tree House and the heavy steps of Colonel Miles Quaritch's AMP exoskeleton). In comparison, the VF traded the DTS 5.1 track of the old 2D editions for a Dolby Digital 5.1 encoding. « fallen » 3D disk. That's very regrettable!

SON – No changes on the acoustic side since these are the same tracks already proposed on the Blu-ray released in 2011 (the VF is therefore not the version). René Chateau operated in VHS). As to which to choose, it will be based on your personal expectations and tastes (the effects, atmospheres and score being different from one track to another!), while knowing that no one is really satisfactory. If you want the natural and dynamic you will turn to the Mandarin DTS-HD MA 2.0 mono track (the real VO), if you want to hear progressive rock it is towards the Cantonese DTS-HD MA 2.0 track that you will have to listen to, and if you want spatialization it is for the Mandarin DTS-HD MA 6.1 and French DTS-HD MA 7.1 tracks that you will opt for. But where the first one has punch and adds to its 2.0 mono mix a few additional atmospheres at the rear, the second is flat and much more artificial (but the voices seem distant) while denaturing the work with over-exaggerated sounds (yes, Bruce Lee's screams do not exist in VO!) and almost-absent music.

IMAGE – A simply magnificent UHD transfer that modernises the work without ever betraying it. The small occasional spots of the HD master have been cleaned, the 35 mm grain which is discreet remains finely present throughout, the definition makes a real leap forward (the few broad planes are still softer, the anamorphic signature obliges), the level of details is very high (the weapons, the kilts and the coats have never been as clear), the depth of field is quite colossal (the backgrounds are ultra-precise), the colorimetric palette is a little colder (not on the faces that remain very warm) with much more vibrant hues (the blue sky, the green grass, the war paintings, the red uniforms), the contrasts are striking with the blacks of a beautiful depth and the whites of a great brightness, and the light sources (light of the day, the reflections on the wet environments, the flames) increase greatly in intensity.
SON – Powerful soundtracks (good dynamic and LFE channel that roams with insistence) and precise, which sparingly use surrounds to broadcast the sumptuous BO or to immerse us completely in the battle. But of course, it is in Dolby Atmos that the most benefit from it with a VO that gains in acoustic space, musical width and depth of bass, while raising the atmospheres (the fauna of the forest, the rain) and the vacarm of the action scenes (the deaf noise of white weapons).

IMAGE – Augmented shade, more nuanced colours, increased black depth and much brighter light sources are the building blocks of this UHD transfer.

IMAGE – A very nice upgrade with a 16 mm grain very present but not invasive and images with very natural rendering. It is piqued without excess, the colors are very drowsy and the black solid. The light sources appear to be brighter.
SON – A VO Dolby TrueHD 5.1 essentially frontal and not very powerful, but rather very satisfactory given the low film budget. Environmental ambiences like the shouts of demons put in the atmosphere, and the whole is mixed with great precision.

IMAGE – Always spoiled about the quality of its video editions, Evil Dead 2 Gets ready with this ultra HD 4K release of its most beautiful looks. The transfer is solid and does not suffer from any compressive problems (in Dolby Vision at least), the copy is cleaned, the silver grain is better controlled, the increased resolution allows the details to show itself more distinctly, the colors are richer and varied, the contrasts are more fantastic than ever, the blacks are more penetrating and the light sources, not necessarily much brighter (sometimes yes, like the atmosphere lighting of the forest), are more nuanced (cf. indoor lamps). However, for those who would not know (!!!) the aspect of photography, the images of this Evil Dead 2 are rough and dotted with (sometimes blurred) planes whose rendering is variable (many sources were used during shooting). This is not in any way a defect because it is an integral part of the charm of this DIY cult reel.
SON – As on the previous Blu-ray edition, identical in terms of soundtracks, it is towards the VO that one must turn to enjoy all the auditory madness of the work. Larger and more powerful than the VF (when even nice for the nostalgic of the era), but also and above all more generous in surround effects, it nevertheless remains no less dated today even if cartoonesque at wish.

IMAGE – It's pure vintage juice with a rather strong granulosity, a weak sting (cf. passages in the church) and dark scenes with little contrast. But in direct comparison with the Blu-ray, this UHD transfer delivers more refined details, more saturated colors (the red outfit of Adrienne Barbeau), more sinister blacks and more marked light sources (the bulbs of the fridges in the intro, the mist). There is, however, a problem because some blacks start to flash (as in the history around the fire) in Dolby Vision. And if this is not the case with HDR10 encoding, HDR10 suffers from strawberry compression (not in DV therefore) with chromatic aberrations in the grain, pixels in the fog and flickering lighting (illumination of the cross at the end).
SON – Closer to a timid surround stereo track to the tightened front scene and suffocated voices, the VF is much less than the VO, which is far from being demonstrative. But the latter is still more dynamic (at the time of the murders), let the fores breathe and distill some small effects surround.

IMAGE – The small details are revealed, the colours are browner than on Blu-ray are more nuanced and the light sources increase in intensity. But as with HD transfer, contrasts are not always solid and dark scenes may lack readability.

IMAGE – Approved by photography director Gary B. Kibbe, this 4K restoration is superb and has no compression problems. The granular structure is respectful of the source (turning 35 mm), the images are cleaner, the details are better defined (cf. the wide planes of the city), the colors are much richer (the primary ones at the head), the light sources are more intense (the illuminating rockets of the forces of order, sunsets) and the contrasts, more worked than in HD, add a beautiful depth to the frame (thanks for this the increased depth of the blacks).
SON – A living VO where the least sound is clear and detached (helicopters, crowd scenes), where environments simmer throughout the sound space (the stereo effects are even excellent), where Carpenter's score benefits from good spatialization and where bass (music but less for effects) are powerful. Less rich and more narrow, the VF has in addition to nasal voices.

IMAGE – Like the 4K Ultra HD Batman: The Killing Joke, this UHD transfer from a production DC Universe Animated Original Movies is better than previous publications. The increase of the dynamic range allows all the lighting to shine with more ardour, the colors are a little brighter, the contrasts are enhanced and the color banding no longer travels (it remained on the Blu-ray). However, the definition remains the same and the details are no more visible.
SON – It is certainly not the most unforgettable soundtrack it is (a classic sound design and unbold bass), but it does the job. The dialogues are clear, the spatialisation is completed, the effects/ambiences are present, the surrounds participate fully in paranormal confrontations and the music is well ventilated in the acoustic space.

IMAGE – Extremely dynamic and clean, this Ultra HD transfer is beautiful. The images are free of grain, the details are more impressive thanks to finer and precise textures (especially when the brightness is low), the colors are slightly more desaturated with a modified palette pulling on the green (while it is neutral on the Blu-ray), the contrasts are boosted, the blacks are deeper and the lights have more power (light of the day and flame intensity). On the other hand, some night plans have compression artifacts like a light color banding.
SON – Already excelling in terms of dynamics and directionality, the VO Atmos can boast of delivering harmonious voices, ultra-immersive effects/ambiences, a very well-defined score and tense basses, but also of using a ubiquitous rear scene and aerial channels to watch (fire trees, helicopters, water spills, bees and wind). It's quite simple, this mixing plunges us into hell.

IMAGE – With a just sublime silver aspect, the images from this UHD transfer prove once again that Sony dominates his subject. The granular texture is regular, the piqué is very sharp, the details are incredible sharpness, the warm and earthy colors are deeper and intense, the contrasts are more precise and the light sources shine like the revolvers in the sun. Next to it, the Blu-ray appears to be softer, coarser and off.
SON – Between the powerful sound of shots echoing above the stage, the regular use of surround channels, the wide spacing of spatialisation, the realistic integration of natural atmospheres (rain, thunder and insects invite on the heights) and the healthy fidelity of the score, the VO Atmos is a marvel. Dynamic as well as if less extensive, the VF(F) with well-occurring atmospheres does not let itself fall apart.

IMAGE – The colorimetric palette is beautifully reproduced with brighter hues (blues and orange reds) and a brown appearance absent from the Blu-ray, the ambient resolution is excellent, the details are improved (faces, costumes, textures), the contrasts are even stronger for deeper dark scenes that gain in coherence, and the lighting is otherwise more striking (cf. the napalm bomb). However, the too variable grain layer (sometimes as necessary, sometimes invasive, sometimes strangely limited and sometimes frozen) is destabilizing, as are the few planes where the double contours of the HD master continue to be there.
SON – Very dynamic and immersive sound tracks where the atmospheres are recreated with great precision both at the front and the back (good surround activity). Everything is perfectly restored, from clear dialogues to devastating bass, even though it is true that on the VO Atmos the high channels only too rarely engage in the part (if not for helicopters, the human presence on the upper floor in the city hall and the final explosion).

IMAGE – A perfect 4K Ultra HD transfer where the definition is striking, where the details are everywhere (they are sharper than in HD), where the already sparkling colorimetry palette becomes brighter (look at the greens), where the contrasts are optimized (see the brightness of the whites and the firmness of the blacks) and where the light sources are brighter (the flashing lighting of the space station, the daylight).
SON – Little subtle but of incredible primary efficiency, these Dolby Atmos soundtracks (DTS-HD MA not tested) made of noise and fury break the house. And whether you opt for VO or VF, it's a real auditory compressor roller you'll have to deal with. The dynamics are devastating, all the speakers are constantly asked for ultra-enveloping spatialization, the effects are uppercuts without covering the atmospheres, the surrounding canals are upset as possible, the aerial scene is heard with force (helicopters, skyscrapers that collapse, genetically modified wild beasts, etc.) and the bass make the walls tremble. A tip, tell your neighbors they won't have a break for nearly 108 minutes!

IMAGE – While overall this UHD transfer magnifies the winter photography of the work, there is still the presence of imperfections specific to the Universal. The more refined grain than in HD no longer vegetates, the filmic images of the source are even more punctured with an increased sharpness of the elements of the frame and more complex textures (the stitches), the colorimetric palette is more realistic with globally more unsaturated hues where other more resplendent give density to the fad colours of the Blu-ray (the fireball during the inaugural seat and more generally all the flames are much more orange), and the light sources are incredibly brighter (cf. the counter-dive planes where the daylight dazzles with striking realism) with brilliant reflections (especially on the surface of the water and on armor). On the other hand, blacks are so deep and dense that they sometimes crush details in the shadows, and some planes present artificial improvements in contours as well as a smoothing of the grain (an unfortunate almost constant in this publisher).
SON – A very engaging VO DTS:X where the rush of the battles envelops us (the trajectory of the arrows that split the air from one end of the room through the height channels) without omitting the use of low frequencies when the ground simmers and/or shields clash, and where the calm of the intimate scenes calls for subtly immersive environmental atmospheres. It is dynamic, wonderfully balanced and of great acoustic richness, with in addition to perfectly clear dialogues and very airy music. Even if it does its job well, the VF(Q) is less extensive and suffers from a severe withdrawal.

IMAGE – Impressive in all areas, the UHD HDR images of the present 4K Ultra HD are more detailed, color-coded, precise in darkness and vivid in terms of lighting (night vision is a very good example).
SON – Very committed, the VO Atmos breathes at the rhythm of the suffocating pulses of Hildur Guðnadóttir's score. The dialogues are clear, the effects like the atmospheres are perfectly positioned in the sound space, the height channels (the rotors of a helicopter, the fall of debris following explosions, etc.) continue along the way, and the basses have a lot of impact. Less rich and weaker, the VF remains quite recommendable.

IMAGE – Managing the darkness and light better than its HD counterpart, this extremely detailed 4K Ultra HD (cf. the craze on bodies and clothes) is visually very beautiful. The contrasts are at the top level, the different light sources are much more intense and realistic (police gyrophars, red laser sights, interior lighting, flames, digital displays), the poorly lit scenes benefit from better management of the blacks (the separation of the shadows is clearer), the colors are more nuanced and better saturated (especially reds and oranges), and the grain added in post-prod is carefully restored. But if it is firmly compressed (it's a good thing because the places are often smoky), this UHD transfer repeatedly makes a slight video noise.
SON – Impressive and immersive as possible, the VO Atmos is a trail of mass destruction. The dynamic range is too wide, the voices are always made clear, the effects are really fantastic (the deaf noise of the fire), the surrounds and the aerial scene are very engaged (helicopters, flame returns, various debris), the music is perfectly ventilated in the listening room and the LFE channel is very powerful. Also intense but less extensive and enveloping, the VF is no less extra.
Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
