WORK - The Last Whip
1969. After spending more than ten years teaching at Hunter College in New York, the esteemed Dr Jones, professor of archaeology, is about to retire and sink peaceful days. Everything changes after the surprise visit of her goddaughter Helena Shaw, who is looking for a rare artifact that her father entrusted to Indy years ago: the famous dial of Archimedes, a relic that would have the power to locate temporal cracks.
In search of time lost after the collapse of his world, Professor Jones embarks on a final adventure full of action, humor (always a solid sense of second degree) and melancholy... The scenario is well drilled even if mechanical, the many peripets are led beating drum, the duo Ford/Waller-Bridge treats and references abound. From the great Hollywood entertainment to the old one, which, aside from some questionable CGIs, offers a nice conclusion to the saga by remaining faithful to the recipes already tested in the past. It's in the old pots that we make the best soup!
« I miss the desert, I miss the sea, and I wake up every morning wondering what kind of adventure the new day will bring me miss. »
Sallah Mohammed Faisel al-Kahir
IMAGE - The corridors of time
Captured in all digital, a first for franchise, but without the clinical aspect that usually goes with (due to the use of anamorphic optics and the refined application of a silver texture in post-production), the magnificent photography of Phedon Papamichael (Le Mans 66) accords as ever with the visual signature of its predecessors by a completely unattackable UHD HDR10 transfer...
The definition that does not weaken a second is reinforced (cf. the increased delimitation of the background), the wide frame is full of even more details (the Nazi costumes, the face marked by Indy, the Moroccan decorations) despite a certain sweetness all premeditated, and the Hevc encoding is never taken in default (an average bitrate of 57.8 Mb/s).
Even if not conducive to benefiting from the benefits of Rec. 2020 (there are only balloons, especially during Dr Jones' starting pot, which use them), the colorimetric palette with regularly warm and mordorated hues (so deeply respectful of his legacy) is superbly saturated. Then there are the contrasts that benefit from a beneficial enlargement during the night passages (for better visibility thanks to blacks at the depth otherwise better controlled) and the light sources, knowingly retained (an average luminance of 144 cd/m2), which display with a little more intensity until reaching 404 nits with the beam of the flashlight in the cave in Sicily.
SON - On the road again 🎶
Precise and well distributed, this soundtrack rhythmized by the nostalgic score of John Williams (which for the occasion composes a new theme for the female character) nevertheless lacks terrible punch...
The sound dynamics are indeed reserved (if it is the sono of the neighbors that awakens Indy) and the basses very little impacting. In fact, shots, explosions and other road collisions do not have any weight whatsoever. Fortunately, horizontal spatialization is excellent (racing and pursuits in New York and Tangier, reverberations in the cave of Dionysos) and perfectly audible dialogues. As for the verticality of the mixing, even if not so much in demand over the duration, it turns out to be very sympathetic (the fall of the confetti during the New York parade, the planes in the prologue, the rain).
Just as moderate in its scale, the VF is a little more collected in its effects and atmospheres. Only the dubbing (where Richard Darbois seems tired) is well incorporated and the seven pregnants seriously active.
- Too old for this bullshit?
Concerned about the aging and march of history, this final naturally testamentary chapter of the most famous adventurer of cinema, in which James Mangold (who fired with honours) took over from Steven Spielberg after a disappointing fourth part, goes back time to pay a very nice tribute to Indiana Jones... Let the 4K Ultra HD present improve with accuracy. Now the hour of retirement has come!
Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
