Captain America: First Avenger, Born in the USA

Captain America - The Trilogy

Steve Rogers, frail and shy, volunteered to participate in an experimental program that turned him into a Super Soldier known as Captain America. Joined Bucky Barnes and Peggy Carter, he will face the evil HYDRA organization led by the fearsome Red Skull...

With this Captain America: The First Avenger, the right maker Joe Johnston trained at Spielberg / Lucas school offers us a very effective summer blockbuster packed like an old-fashioned serial. The scenario mixes the genres (action, adventure, war) with a timing close to perfection and applies to narrate with much second degree the origins of the myth Captain America While presenting a relevant historical-political rereading of the 1940s, the replicas very often fly, the characters perfectly interpreted (Chris Evans, Tommy Lee Jones, Hugo Weaving) are developed, endearing and charismatic (hero Steve Rogers and the real villain Red Skull are memorable), the sets and costumes are deliciously retro, the vehicles have an amazing retro-futuristic design, the action scenes without being numerous are as rhythmic as they are legible, and the original tape ofAlan Silvestri is excellent bill. In the end, a very good old-fashioned adventure film that is nothing less than the best superheroic adaptation of Phase 1 of the Marvel film universe.

Limited by the voluntary softness of the pique and the sepia tone of the photograph, this UHD presentation nevertheless offers a clear improvement over the HD transfer. The plans enjoy greater clarity, the definition is more stable, the details are more refined (faces, clothes), the depth of field extends more, the majestic colorimetric palette rooted in the 1940s is richer (including reds and blues), contrasts are reinforced (the labs with little light take advantage of it) and light sources become more intense (see the sequence where Steve Rogers becomes Captain America). Note also that the overall brightness is more temperate (it was excessive before) for a much more nuanced and realistic rendering, as a result, the images that are now more natural, seem to be a postcard of a more suitable period (this particular patina seemed previously added to the forceps). In continuing the game of comparisons with the Blu-ray, it should also be noted that the dark scenes formerly noisy are no longer so and that the cinematic grain is made more discreet (DNR has been applied). And if the compression is necessarily more discreet here, the first images show a little color banding (the light halos of the flashlights).

To give more life to this mix DisneyAs always, you will have to raise the level of listening. Once this intervention is completed, these soundtracks « Released » will be able to play their scores fully. Well spatialised and not lacking in scope (the dynamics are more engaging than usual), they are equipped with many pyrotechnic effects (action scenes are explosive) and environmental atmospheres perfectly located on all the speakers, palpable basses even if not so aggressive (they have never been in any case), a very enveloping score and always audible dialogues. Opening the acoustic landscape with parsimony, the VO Atmos uses a regular aerial component (wind, cosmic power of the Tesseract, all the explosions and j-en pass).

Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Three Days of the Condor

Captain America - The Trilogy

After the cataclysmic events in New York, Steve Rogers aka Captain America lives quietly in Washington, D.C. and tries to adapt to the modern world. But when a colleague from S.H.I.E.L.D. is attacked, Steve finds himself involved in a network of intrigues that puts the world at risk...

After a first episode particularly pulp, the most patriotic of the superheroes belonging to the team of Avengers is back in this high-tech conspiracy thriller to the surprisingly subversive political subtext, including the scenario rich in twists that does not forget to develop characters and universe Marvel, the dynamic and rhythmic staging that correctly uses huge special effects, and the adrenaline discharges provided by well conducted action scenes (the attack of Nick Fury's armored car, the fight in the elevator and the apocalyptic aerial final), make this Captain America: Winter Soldier · Global Voices a very spectacular Hollywood entertainment to rank in the top of the stable basket Marvel Studios.

More luminous and equipped with less opaque dark scenes, this UHD HDR10 transfer represents a nice improvement compared to Blu-ray. So yes, the definition is not much sharper despite increased clarity and the sharper, even if clearer (faces, costumes and elements of the decor), is not however striking. But here it is, WCG and HDR technos add a lot of vitality and peps to the images, and that's not nothing! The beautifully saturated colours appear as deeper and vibrant (Captain America's shield and uniform), the contrasts are now more marked (cf. the brightness of the whites and the richness of the blacks) and it is mainly the different lights that are intensely brighter (the holograms of the members of the committee of the S.H.I.E.L.D., head-up display in Nick Fury's vehicle, explosions, sometimes blinding light of the day, lamps and other interior ceiling lights, reflections on the metal arm of the winter soldier). By the way, know that the close-ups of Cap and Natasha's faces that were already very soft in HD (we'll call it courtesy DNR), unfortunately are still so. Worse still, the increase in resolution makes them reflect even more. As such, strengthening detail is not always beneficial.

Once the volume is adjusted to get the best out of it, you will hear immerse from these energetic and enveloping soundtracks a precise spatialization, an overvitamined dynamic, intense pyrotechnic effects (it shoots and explodes from everywhere), wide surrounds (which could have dropped even more), a score (the best of the MCU that one owes to Henry Jackman) under tension ventilated with balance, strong bass and particularly clear voices (once it is not customary, those of the VF are a little in withdrawals). More memorable with a larger acoustic space and a much more physical LFE channel, the VO Atmos can also count on an aerial scene far from being shy (the blast of explosions and the resulting debris falls, a damaged grid in an elevator, the presence of Bucky on the roof of a car, Rogers' announcement in the premises of the S.H.I.E.L.D., various flying machines, etc.) to plunge us more brutally into the heart of the action. But what good does it feel when Disney decides to take the bridle off his soundtracks!

Captain America: Civil War, Republic Enemy

Captain America - The Trilogy

Steve Rogers is now head of the Avengers, whose mission is to protect humanity. Following one of their interventions, which caused significant collateral damage, the government decided to establish a command and oversight body. This news causes a split within the team...

Thanks to the nervous staging of Russo brothers, this surge of action and superhero ensures the show... But the Greek tragedy that is playing against it remains harmless!

Benefiting from greater sharpness and much less bland photography, this 4K Ultra HD presentation strengthens the clean and brilliant digital images of Captain America's 3rd adventures. The definition does not weaken much, the piqué becomes more refined (face details, clothing textures, « skin » The previously less vibrant colours benefit from improved saturation (the flesh tones, red hair) and new shades (the costumes), contrasts are reinforced by brighter whites (the clouds, the young Tony Stark's outfit) and deeper blacks (the run-off in the tunnel, the abandoned base) that do not crush the shadows, and the light sources shine much more (light of the day, the interior lights, the energy source of the Iron Man armor, Wanda's powers, the gyrophars).

After pushing the volume, this soundtrack can give the best of itself. Far from the dynamic in retreat and the lack of magnitude felt on the Blu-ray soundtracks, it is delivered here with as much strength as precision. Balanced and harmonious, she knows how to take advantage of vast spatialization and chaotic pyrotechnic effects to challenge the viewer. Of course, she does not forget to distribute enveloping atmospheres, to use an activity around rarely on standby, to aerate the score that does not make in figuration, to awaken bass as needed (the weight of the detonations, a motorcycle caught up by Bucky) and to spread with clarity the dialogues. Presented with a more frank opening, the VO Dolby Atmos benefits from an aerial scene not necessarily ultra-present but which actually reinforces the feeling of immersion (some movements of the Red Wing drone, explosions, presence « arachnid » of Spider-Man and « giant » d-Ant-Man, blades of a helicopter, rain, etc.).
