After a first half-tone episode, Marvel's sorcerer struggled to find his place in a universe already filled with superheroes of all kinds. Phase 4 of the MCU is driven by the monstrous success of Spider-Man: No Way HomeIt was normal to surf the wave of the multiverse and highlight a much more complex and interesting character than it seems.
A nuclear battery in the camera
Originally planned to be placed before the weaver's last adventure, the film was set off by its director, Scott Derrickson, officially for « creative disputes » (a nice way to say that he didn't have a say and that he slammed the studio door). Let's face it, we don't lose at the change (far from there) because Kevin Feige decides to call the awesome Sam Raimi to replace the director behind Sinister.
Sam Raimi, for the anchors of the bottom of the class, is the director trained in the scramble and system D of Evil Dead, cult horror movie known for its ever-seen camera movements (especially for a movie shot on weekends between buddies) that will pay Raimi his ticket to Hollywood. Follow Dead on the grid (written by the Coen brothers), Evil Dead 2 (a suite/remake of the 1st), Darkman (1st incursion into the superheroic genus), Evil Dead 3: The Dark Army and the western Dead or alive, the thriller A simple plan, sports film For the love of the game with Kevin Costner or Intuition, formidable drama tinted with terror with Cate Blanchett and Keanu Reeves.
But his greatest successes will undoubtedly be the founding trilogy of Spider-Man with Tobey Maguire, the perfect mix between the blockbuster and the comic book where each plan looks like it comes out of a box of Dikto, Romita or Buscema.
So it was time Raimi returned to business (his last film, The fantastic world of Oz, date of 2013) and well took him so much Dr. Strange ranks without worries in the top of the MCU basket.
Travel to the centre of madness
Stephen Strange, who has nightmares, saves a young girl chased by a demon. This one, named America Chavez, has the power to travel in the multiverse. Strange, to protect her, appeals to Wanda Maximoff, who has been alive since the Westview incident... And we will not say any more so as not to reveal too much intrigue and preserve the few surprises that emanate from a certainly marked scenario, but how playful for a Sam Raimi who seems to burst like a little fool.
The Gargantos attack along the buildings irreparably returns to Octopus in Spider-Man 2, a horrific sequence within a temple reminds us Evil Dead 2 and his stuffing spirits, not to mention the mandatory cameo of his fetish actor Bruce Campbell.
Don't expect a complete overhaul of the MCU, but the promotional campaign, though intense, has had the good idea of preserving many surprises that will not fail to ejaculate the geek that sleeps in you. Moreover, the horrific side is fully assumed and you will not fail to meet zombie, glaucous atmosphere and jump scare. Dear little blondes, expect to be surprised!

Côté personnages, Stephen Strange prend de l’étoffe et son côté arrogant est mis à mal par une série d’échecs, notamment dans sa vie privée. La jeune Xochitl Gomez campe une America Chavez convaincante mais c’est Elizabeth Olsen, qui vole la vedette au reste du casting, qui offre à son personnage une excellente suite et conclusion à la série WandaVision (à voir impérativement avant le film).
Martin Scorsese disait que les films Marvel étaient plus des attractions que du cinéma. En soi, il n’a pas tout à fait tort. Mais quand on a aux manettes un Sam Raimi en pleine forme, on remettrait bien une petite pièce pour refaire un tour de manège, non ?
