WORK – For the humor of the gods

While Thor is in full introspection and seeking serenity, his retreat is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr, who has given himself the mission to exterminate all gods. To face this threat, Thor asks Valkyrie, Korg and his ex-girlfriend Jane Foster, who, to his surprise, inexplicably handles his powerful hammer, the Mjolnir.

Not able to reproduce the magic formula of Ragnarok, « kicking the Hulk » in acid, this fourth adventure of the God of Thunder (devitalized) is at the service of the joke (potache) at the expense of dramaturgy. The result is a joyfully inconsequential bazaar to the unstable balance, where inspired artistic direction (episodically sabotaged by unworthy CGIs), nuanced (but under-exploited) antagonist and the battle of the Kingdom of Shadows (other action scenes being just functional), are struck by too much humor at the limit of the parody. Even if entertaining and fun, this 29th film of the MCU is too casual for his own good.

IMAGE – Far from Valhalla?

While 35 minutes in 1.90 IMAX format are exclusively available on Disney+, this UHD HDR10 transfer (against Dolby Vision streaming encoding) is still much better compressed and offers a clear improvement over Blu-ray.

Even more « pop » in its rendering, the kaleidoscopic photography of Barry Baz Idoine (at work on The MandalorianOne of the series Star Wars) is sealed by the combined lightning of the WCG and HDR. Not that the definition makes no difference, there is also only to look at the obvious increase in the sharpness of the details (the complexity of the costumes, the fineness of the lines of the face and the richness of the environments) to convince one to the contrary, but it is not in this field that it shines the most.

The flashy colorimetric palette is adorned with raised primary (the red of the capes, the rainbow of the « glittering path »), the contrasts readily affluent acquire in density (the better cut shadows are beneficial to the night attack of New Asgard) and the light sources certainly dazzling enjoy a livelier shine (metal reflections on silver surfaces and/or gilding, sunset, energy manifestations).

SOUND – Storm Alert!

A little less shy than his friends « Dolby Atmouse » (the LFE channel regains weight and vivacity dynamics) despite a low recording level (at about 15 dB of the reference level), the VO is a very immersive soundtrack where the soundscape, generously frightful (up to the strident screams of the Indugarr goats), is flooded with effects/ambiences in the surrounds (the murmurs of the Necrolama, the fauna in the sterile planet's oasis, the armed forces on the battlefield), supported by an appropriate verticality (the entrances into the Bifröst, the lightning of Zeus in Omnipotence City) and rhythmized by an electrifying heroic-rock score (cf. the inclusion of the riffs of the Guns N) that it must be Michael Giacchino.

If it loses a few sounds on the way, starting with those emanating from the height scene (part of which is catchable by activating a DSP virtualization) and turns out to be more rough at the back, the VF which remains spectacular gains in power (a strand) and preserves the clarity of the dialogues (an appropriate dubbing that does not take itself seriously).

CONCLUSION – When lightning falls... right next door

Certainly less well dosed than her eldest even if her director Taika Waititi (the delusional satire of Nazi Germany Jojo Rabbit) is still at the controls, this « divine » space comedy openly too much completely debunks in 4K Ultra HD!

Thor: Love and Thunder

Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
