The 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival took place under a somewhat cloudy blue sky from Tuesday 14 to Saturday 25 May 2024.Covered byKillerS7venandthe celest wolfFor nearly nine days, the event was worth the trip since the openly festive atmosphere, the paradise landscape of the Gulf of La Napoule, the encounters in queues and at the Press Room, gourmet cuisine, discussions between movie fanatics and of course the films in competition were given an appointment on the Croisette.
A selection of films attracted by portraits of women (Anora, Emilia Pérez, Seeds of the wild fig tree, The Substance, etc.) and the release of the bodies that let the monsters in (thank you)Julia Ducournau), sessions the ass screwed to a few chairs of technical teams (such as the director and actors during the presentation of the social comedyIn band), an unwavering desire to produce writings no matter the hour or place, strong informative press conferences (how not to evoke the kindness and simplicity of the legendKevin Costner) and an unforgettable closing ceremony have thus rhythmized the slow canine marathon (they try to recover since) but intoxicating from our two companions. In the streets of busy journalists/professionals/passionates, they were able to meet with the little happiness (lucky) of celebrities such asShe Fanning, Eva Green, George Lucas, Laurent Lafitte, Melanie Laurent, Omar Sy, Wim Wenders, Xavier Dolanand a few more.

Even though vanity and overwhelming in the beauty of women's bodies, this anthology that sees triple on the love grip and voluntary servitude resulting from it is a black comedy that, unlike its characters (a prestigious casting that shines all the way along) codedependent in the eyes of others, never seeks to please with its permanent provocation and its shock images. And then inPoor creaturesHeroin lived with a brain other than his, in this controlled madhouse, no body really seems to belong to its legitimate owner... For in the style of the 90s, as the shots resound in the Sierra and the great feelings settle forever in the great American West, this historical choir fresco (one follows several destinies during the expansion of the nation) making the part beautiful to women smell good the leather of cows and the great meadows. 🌿🌿🌿🌿

Dans le Valinco des années 90, alors que la guerre des clans fait rage, ce touchant road-movie où la mort fauche sans crier gare tisse avec sensibilité une relation filiale (entre un père et une fille interprétés par des acteurs non professionnels) en proximité directe avec une série de drames. Et alors qu’ils apprennent à se connaître dans la beauté déchirée du sud de la Corse, cette tragédie à hauteur d’enfant touche en plein cœur. Un premier film puissant ! 🌿🌿🌿

Sensitive, enjoyable and intoxicating, this surprisingly touching portrait of a real bad ass (interpreted by the tremendously energeticMikey Madison) imposes as the best film ofits independent director. J’ai trouvé ma Palme d’or ! 🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿
Parthenope
La vie de Parthénope de sa naissance dans les années 1950 à nos jours. Une épopée féminine dépourvue d’héroïsme mais éprise de liberté, de Naples, et d’amour. Les amours vraies, indicibles ou sans lendemain qui vous condamnent à la douleur mais qui vous font recommencer. Le parfait été à Capri d’une jeunesse insouciante malgré un horizon sans issue. Autour de Parthénope, les napolitains.
S’étendant des années 50 à nos jours, cette épopée féminine sur les mystères de la jeunesse (et de la ville de Naples), vus sous la posture de l’anthropologie, s’offre une esthétique (de cartes postales ?) aussi belle et sensuelle quesa divine héroïne. Mais ripoliné et s’abimant dans une vision surannée de la femme (comprendre celle du vieux mâle blanc), ce roman-photo à la frontière du sacré et du profane est aussi pompeux qu’éculé. Oui,The great beautys’est noyée dans les eaux de la cité parthénopéenne ! 🌿🌿
Le Fil
Depuis qu’il a fait innocenter un meurtrier récidiviste, Maître Jean Monier ne prend plus de dossiers criminels. La rencontre avec Nicolas Milik, père de famille accusé du meurtre de sa femme, le touche et fait vaciller ses certitudes. Convaincu de l’innocence de son client, il est prêt à tout pour lui faire gagner son procès aux assises, retrouvant ainsi le sens de sa vocation.
Portrait d’un avocat de la défense (trop) dévoué en même temps que plaidoyer contre les convictions dans la procédure pénale (où le vrai reste inatteignable puisque sa perception est propre à chacun), ce film de procès (devant la cour d’assises) qui s’articule autour de la parole de ses acteurs (tous dans la justesse d’interprétation), entretient le doute jusqu’à l’éventuelle condamnation votée dans la chambre des délibérés… Qu’une résolution (inattendue ?) à double coups, preuve irréfutable permettant à cette œuvre de prétoire de se distinguer du tout-venant du genre, viendra chambouler le spectateur dans sa position de juré. J’accuse ! 🌿🌿🌿

Ceará, côte nord du Brésil. 30 degrés tout l’année. Chaque nuit, au Motel Destino, se jouent à l’ombre des regards de dangereux jeux de désir, de pouvoir et de violence. Un soir, l’arrivée du jeune Heraldo vient troubler les règles du motel.
Étreint par une photographie sous néons éprise de 16 mm (avec quelques infidélités pour le Super 8), ce thriller sexué à la chaleur étouffante évoque l’attirance des corps dans un coin paumé du Brésil. Mais alors que la tension investit peu à peu les lieux, l’intrigue est bien trop convenue pour être un véritable bon coup ! En passant, meilleur générique de fin de la sélection. 🌿🌿🌿

Sa sœur Araweelo s’est réfugiée chez lui après une dispute conjugale turbulente. Le potentiel de Cigaal, le fils de Mamargade, est ignoré en raison de la situation au coeur de l’intimité de cette famille fragile. Mamargade et sa sœur se font confiance mais n’auraient pas choisi de vivre ensemble si les circonstances ne les y avaient pas contraints.
À travers l’intimité d’une famille (un père, sa sœur et son fils) en proie à la misère dans un quotidien incertain, c’est la tragédie du peuple somalien queMo Haraweausculte avec un formidable apaisement. Et si elle fait entendre l’un des cœurs blessés du monde contemporain, alors même que le souvenir des rêves n’est plus, cette véritable leçon de vie sans pittoresque (même si la séduisante photographie est en quelque sorte l’arbre qui cache la forêt) ni pathos facile aurait mérité de couper dans le gras (des longueurs de-ci de-là). Toutefois, nul doute qu’un nouveau talent vient d’émerger ! 🌿🌿🌿

Victime d’un complot, le jeune Edmond Dantès est arrêté le jour de son mariage pour un crime qu’il n’a pas commis. Après quatorze ans de détention au château d’If, il parvient à s’évader. Devenu immensément riche, il revient sous l’identité du comte de Monte-Cristo pour se venger des trois hommes qui l’ont trahi.
Deuxième partie du « Dumas Cinématique Univers » après le diptyqueThe Three Musketeers, la nouvelle adaptation duComte de Monte Cristopermet à son héros torturé d’assouvir sa vengeance dans un grand divertissement populaire où tout n’est que grandiosité. Romanesque au possible et au service de ses personnages impérialement incarnés par un casting prestigieux (à commencer par un éloquentPierre Nineydans la peau du célèbre Edmond Dantès), ce blockbuster made in France qui ménage son suspens tout du long est aussi enlevé (une cavalcade continue) que bien narré et visuellement chiadé (la photographie est superbe, la mise en scène ample et la reconstitution magnifique). Dans l’histoire du cinéma français, il y aura assurément un avant et un après le 28 juin prochain… 🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿
Love
Les années 80, dans le nord de la France. Jackie et Clotaire grandissent entre les bancs du lycée et les docks du port. Elle étudie, il traine. Et puis leurs destins se croisent et c’est l’amour fou. La vie s’efforcera de les séparer mais rien n’y fait, ces deux-là sont comme les deux ventricules du même cœur…
Profondément éprise de cinéma (et certainement trop pour son propre bien), cette romance sur fond de film de gangsters, adaptée du roman éponyme de Neville Thompson, est une folle fresque rocambolesque aussi ambitieuse (une histoire d’amour étalée sur près de 20 ans) que violente faisant vibrer le cœur trois heures durant… Et même si peu nuancé et naïf, ce flirt entreScorseseandWest Side Storymû par une bande-son incroyable et prenant corps dans un casting XXL (comme tout le reste en fait), donne envie d’aimer plus que tout car le reste n’est rien ! 🌿🌿🌿🌿

Infirmière à Mumbai, Prabha voit son quotidien bouleversé lorsqu’elle reçoit un cadeau de la part de son mari qu’elle n’a pas vu depuis des années. De son côté, Anu, sa jeune colocataire, cherche en vain un endroit dans la ville pour partager un peu d’intimité avec son fiancé. À l’occasion d’un séjour dans une station balnéaire, pourront-elles enfin laisser leurs désirs s’exprimer ?
Un portrait de femmes fortes dans la cité (pluvieuse, bleue et joliment texturée) des illusions qui critique sans équivoque les carcans emprisonnant les femmes en Inde. Mais dans cette rêverie sociale éveillée où l’émancipation des femmes est en marche, la contemplation éthérée perd dans sa quête de liberté toute forme d’émotion… Si ce n’est un ennui poli ! 🌿🌿

Contemplant le vide de son existence, le lâche Edward se demande ce qu’il est advenu de Molly… Pendant ce temps, Molly reste déterminée à se marier et part à la recherche d’Edward à travers l’Asie.
Dans un sublime écrin noir et blanc, c’est à un voyage expérimental (où il est facile de se perdre) au cœur de l’Asie d’hier (le drame d’époque) et d’aujourd’hui (le documentaire voyeuriste) queMiguel Gomesnous convie. Et tel le marionnettiste d’unnang talung, c’est en contant un languissant jeu du chat et de la souris romantique (un simple prétexte) qu’il pose un regard réflexif sur le colonialisme. Pour qui aura le courage de gravir la lenteur et la monotonie de ce trip polyglotte itinérant, l’envie de suivre celui qui fuit sera récompensée ! 🌿🌿🌿
Seeds of the wild fig tree
Dans un Téhéran secoué par des troubles politiques et sociaux. Le juge d’instruction Iman découvre que son arme a disparu, il soupçonne sa femme et ses filles, imposant des mesures draconiennes qui mettent à rude épreuve les liens familiaux.
Voilée sous un oppressant climat paranoïaque, cette anatomie d’une lutte qui déconstruit le régime iranien au sein même d’une famille mélange les genres avec virtuosité (drame familial, thriller psychologique et vigilante movie) pour mettre en lumière la révolte courageuse des femmes dans un État archaïque en cours d’effondrement. Et alors que la pression quotidienne subie par les femmes surgit à l’intérieur du « cocon » familial, la dernière ligne droite appelle à ne jamais céder face à l’oppression (ici patriarcale et dictatoriale). Un Prix d’interprétation féminine pour le trio féminin (donc collectif) aurait été le minimum… 🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿

La souffrance d’une femme est à l’origine de la révolution des droits sociaux des femmes en Chine.
Inspiré d’un fait divers et marquant le retour sur le devant de la scène deZhang Ziyi (Tiger and Dragon), ce mélodrame se déroulant dans le Shanghai des années 40 occupé par le Japon suit le destin d’une femme accusée d’avoir tué puis démembré son mari. Un peu trop scolaire et ralenti par quelques longueurs, ce film d’époque à l’ancienne n’en reste pas moins captivant puisque sondant l’origine de l’acte en même temps que l’évolution politique du pays. Et quand la République populaire de Chine est proclamée, la pertinence contemporaine du propos met un point final à ce que les femmes victimes de violences domestiques, peu importe leur classe sociale, soit entendues. Plus qu’une métaphore, un message fort rempli d’espoir pour la société moderne. 🌿🌿🌿
Norah
Dans un petit village saoudien isolé des années 90. Nader, un nouveau professeur d’école et artiste secret, arrive au village et rencontre Norah, une jeune femme qui réveille la créativité en lui et l’inspire à peindre à nouveau. Au péril de leur vie, ils développent une connexion délicate et un lien discret.
Engagé et empli de délicatesse, ce récit de tentative d’émancipation dans un bourg paumé du désert d’Arabie saoudite dessine (littéralement) le portrait d’une femme désireuse d’ouvrir ses horizons (limités au maximum par les hommes de sa tribu) quand la culture et l’éducation, représentées par un instituteur qui va lui permettre de contourner les interdits, vont bousculer son quotidien. Dans un pays où le statut des femmes figure parmi les plus répressifs du monde, tout juste considérées comme des inférieures soumises au bon vouloir économique de leurs pères, frères et maris, cette courageuse peinture s’apparente à un geste politique fort se devant d’être exposée aux yeux de tous ! 🌿🌿🌿🌿

Paris 1952, Niki s’est installée en France avec son mari et sa fille loin d’une Amérique et d’une famille étouffantes. En trois chapitres, ce biopic sensible sur le début de carrière de la plasticienneNiki de Saint Phallesonde les tourments d’une artiste dont l’art a été la thérapie. Un portrait cathartique animé par une exceptionnelleCharlotte Le Bon(de tous les plans) qui, sans jamais représenter ses œuvres à l’écran, préfère nous exposer (derrière une mise en scène délicate) comment cette artiste victime d’inceste a su trouver les armes (son art) pour se défendre après les avoir planquées (stricto sensu) sous son lit. La fin est un peu expéditive par contre. 🌿🌿🌿

Il était une fois une pauvre bûcheronne et un pauvre bûcheron qui vivaient au fond d’une forêt polonaise. Pauvre bûcheronne se lamentait de ne pas avoir d’enfants. Un jour que pauvre bûcheronne regardait passer un train qu’elle croyait être de marchandises, un paquet en fut éjecté et tomba dans la neige. Comme un don du ciel, cette petite marchandise s’avéra être celle qu’elle attendait avec tant de ferveur. Une enfant.
Alors qu’il traite du devoir de mémoire, ce film d’animation de toute beauté (dont les traits évoquent l’encre des livres) conte pour la postérité l’horreur de laShoahavec une infinie justesse. Et c’est en réduisant ses dialogues au strict minimum pour que la déchirante poésie de ses images ne fasse plus qu’une avec les violons deDesplat, que ce beau drame profondément humain et porteur d’espoirs (malgré la tristesse ambiante) touche au cœur… Que tout le monde a ! 🌿🌿🌿🌿
