WORK – The warriors of Valhalla

Haunted by a heavy past, Mad Max believes that the best way to survive is to stay alone. However, he was boarded by a band that travelled the desert in a military vehicle driven by Empress Furiosa. They flee from the Citadel where the terrible Immortan Joe has stolen an irreplaceable object. Enraged, this warlord sends his men to hunt down the rebels ruthlessly...

Thirty years after the last installment, visionary director George Miller lights up the engine of the post-nuke cult saga Mad Max with this dynamic and visually stunning motorized trip that never activates the brake pedal.

So of course, the script is simplistic and the dialogues rarity, but the intrigue still in motion, ode vrombing to feminism, is played during a two-hour hallucinating race-prosecution where emotion and stakes slaloming by the looks and gestures of its colorful characters (the badass Max, the rebel empress Furiosa, the psychotic Nux, the all-powerful warlord Immortan Joe) rather than by speech.

The numerous technical prowesses serve as a realization of the stunning visual madness, the rise of speed rhythms the tsunami of inflamed hoods, spectacular waterfalls and unbridled carbblings that take the place of demented scenes of action, the strange and crazy universe of the series is depicted through the delusional customization of the vehicles (the tanker truck « War Machine », double cut Cadillac « Gigahorse », the track vehicle « Peacemaker », the Man truck « Doof Wagon »), the improbable look of the protagonists, the inventiveness of the lifestyle of the survivors (the War Boys, nursing mothers) and the grand beauty of desert landscapes, and the tribal score composed by Junkie XL is stubborn.

Please attach your belt to follow this floor of leads, full of noise and fury, which invites us to a part of rims in the air memorable reinventing nothing less than action cinema (like the first episode in its time). The absolute masterpiece of the genre!

IMAGE – Ode to cracked sheet

If it can happen to the 35 mm silver texture accidentally swirl at the exit of a handful of bends, this UHD HDR10 transfer still imposes as much for a disc released at the birth of the format.

The definition gains a little in precision, the details in finesse (the grains of sand, the dirt on the bodies) and the depth of field in sharpness, so that the broad planes (but not that) display more information than in HD (cf. the hills in the distance).

To fall to the reverse for who loves excess (from primary to high saturation), the lively colorimetric palette that delivers with more nuances (blue sky, blood orange thunderstorm) really burns the screen as soon as the flames, with an all Cartoon intensity (the « Coma-Doof Warrior » Exult!), arise.

More daring finally, contrasts and brightness never stop attracting eyes. Blacks are more penetrating, whites brighter and light sources more biting (reflections on bodywork, shine of stars, appearance of a lead sun in chapter 7).

SOUND – Turn on the engine

Playful and ultra-enveloping, this 3D mixing (in VO as in VF) « angry », precise spatialization and dantesque dynamics, is a « attack » Every moment sound.

The respite is poorly addressed, causing violent effects (collections), roaring atmospheres (dust storms) and a score striking all the canals (the debris falls greatly require the height scene). The clarity is evident, the powerful sound, the thundering bass (explosions are hyper-physical) and the voices, never crushed by the near chaos, always clear (whether or not they travel from one speaker to another).

CONCLUSION – Are we back on the road?

Crushing all the blockbusters of action of recent decades, Mad Max: Fury Road is a violent cinematographic deflagration that holds even better the road in 4K Ultra HD!

Mad Max: Fury Road

Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
