WORK - One for all, all for one

From the Louvre to the Palais de Buckingham, from the bas-fonds of Paris to the headquarters of La Rochelle... In a kingdom divided by religious wars and threatened with invasion by England, a handful of men and women will cross their swords and link their destiny to that of France.

Between tribute and dust removal of the monument ofAlexandre Dumas, this opulent cinematographic adaptation draws a blockbuster of cape and sword in the pure tradition of the genre that puts the powder on fire with a chivalrous fergue and unfeined ambition. The staging of Martin Bourboulon (Eiffel) is bold (the plans-sequences), the casting involved (especially François Civil, Vincent Cassel, Louis Garrel and Vicky Krieps), the gratifying reconstruction, the script removed and the spectacular sword fighting. Warning!

IMAGE - Rich places, poor colors

If the decorations are superb (the Louvre, the cathedral of Meaux, the castle of Fontainebleau, etc.), the photograph signed Nicolas Bolduc lacks a terrible panache with its old French patina... and the combo HDR (Dolby Vision here) / WCG can do nothing.

In short, grim atmospheres (supported by precise contrasts to unblocked blacks) where life was extinguished with brown-brown tones « filthy » and smothered light sources (a mean measured at only 102 nits). Of course, UHD transfer improves (even if discreetly) the depth of the rare colors (at Buckingham Ball) as well as the perception of details in the « High » luminances (inaugural counterlight to the moonlight).

And it's a little the same on the side of the pique, very soft and in no clinical way, for details certainly finer than in HD (beards, decors and costumes) but little sharp and even vaporous in the angles (a capture with anamorphic optics). Let us conclude a particularly vigorous encoding (89 Mbps average).

SOUND - Complots, rappers and good words

In sobriety, this Dolby Atmos soundtrack with realistic sounds delivers not without magnitude (the dynamics impose it) but with too parsimony its effects (the shots and the tingling of the swords) and atmospheres (the beating rain, the noise of the crowd) with an assured distribution (the verticality is played during the stage of the stage).

The dialogues (malons) are easy to grasp (you will not miss anything of the vilenies of the court) and the orchestral composition of Guillaume Roussel (who monkeys the style Zimmerian) perfectly ventilated. For bass feruses on the other hand, it will be necessary to iron (the LFE channel was made to wear pale).

CONCLUSION - Cape or not cape?

Resuming service on a large screen, our four favorite musketeers ride in the saddle for popular entertainment « all fire all blade » that the present 4K Ultra HD, defer from the artistic wills of the technical team (various vintage morne and reserved audio mixing), comes gently enfierve!

Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
