First title of the young studio Rebel Wolves composed partly of former CD Projekt, The Blood of Dawnwalker, soon launched, reminds a lot The Witcher 3 until he takes back his bewitching « LO-LÉ-LÉÈÈÈÈE! ». Does he manage to match his narrative qualities?

Subjective view

When we don't like a game, there are signs that don't deceive us: the repeated tiling, the often pause, the verification on the website of How Long To Beat the remaining time to see the credits rolled out and spent. Let's go straight to the point: unfortunately I didn't hang on to The Blood of Dawnwalker. Not that it's a bad game, far from it, but some of its flaws made me sigh so many times that I ended up letting go of the controller, a little upset, after a big fifteen hours. Explanations.

Coen is rather sensitive, which makes him relatively endearing.

Yet everything seemed to be responding to the narrative plan to captivate my attention: a tragic quest that sees our hero Coen go on an adventure to save his family from the canine of a tyrannical vampire lord, script branching according to our choices, a mature narrative... If the story is followed and benefits from a correct writing for an RPG, it did not at any time transcend, the fault may be to secondary characters a little fads and a voluntary burst of quests for an original structure of progression à la carte. Unless it's because of the invasive interface or some old-fashioned systems seen and revamped as tracking of highlighted objects to advance small ultra scripted survey scenes. It's very simple, once out of the prologue, nothing was left in breath.

Parade, response, parade, response, pierrade, compost.

If at least the game caught up with his action scenes... The fighting Dawnwalker soon prove to be former In addition to suffering from a very imprecise enemy lockdown, a pataud protagonist (the peak for a vampire), adversaries with PV bags and a regular strawberry camera that would pass the From Software productions for a reference in this area. This damn camera will make you lose many rixes, when Coen won't just block in insignificant decor elements like a tent wire or a stool.

From the first game to the last, you will always fight the same way in Dawnwalker. Parade, response, parade, response: that's all. It is certainly possible to improve a tree of skills to enrich our range of movements, but this happens far too late, after the fatigue has settled down. In addition, it is mainly a question of cooldown, which can be used once every 20 seconds before resuming the temporary parade/reaction dance. None of these capabilities fundamentally change the approach to combat. Add to this the impossibility of escaping from the fact that all doors become mysteriously impassable once a confrontation begins and you hold the recipe of frustration. Fighting is the main flaw of the game and is boring as possible.

Rather pretty, the open world is still uninteresting to explore.

As regards exploration, The Blood of Dawnwalker early made evoke all the open worlds released in recent years, with its batch of observation towers to climb, enemy brigades to occire and camps to clean. The open world, which is never appropriated, is empty enough and populated by PNJ who have the unfortunate tendency to repeat their tirades as an animatronic in pain. We follow the yellow points of interest indicated by our compass, while nothing promotes or encourages organic exploration, as would be done in a Skyrim or Breath of the Wild To name but a few. As for the day/night system, it does not bring any frank difference of gameplay, all the more so since Cohen is playing a little bit the same way at both times of the day.

Coen the vampire, here captured in the middle of a trashing session.

The Dawnwalker all seem to be half finished, a little crazy, like the inventory, how much borderlic and unpleasant to survey. The brushes and even the equipment statistics are unsatisfactory and unclear, as if insufficient time had been given to balance them (+2 % chance of a critical blow, mazette is an exciting stat!).

It's all these little anicoches that, put to the end, made me give up Dawnwalker. If it is a very honourable first title, it would in my opinion have benefited from an open world structure and several months of extra polishing for its ergonomics and graphics, clearly late for a game sold full pot at 80 euros. If the balance sheet may seem severe, I still encourage the curious in need of The Witcher to be tempted after some balancing patches and a small promotion. Who knows? Maybe you'll be better able to forgive him than I am for his flaws and his technical record a little dated.
