WORK – Who hides behind « Ghostface » ?

Terrorized by a serial killer inspired by the greatest horror films to execute his crimes, a small city becomes the ground for a vast investigation where everyone is suspicious...

Classic of the horror of the 90s, Scream is a constantly disarming meta-slasher filled with humor whose intelligent script is played lightly by gender codes and stereotyped characters without defusing the strong sensations that go with it. Well built and firmly interpreted, this « film of a generation » However, it remains timeless.

IMAGE – Don't open the door!

Restored in 4K from a new scan of the original negatives, the 35 mm anamorphic image of the work (a rather soft pique with light blurs and some modifications of the geometry of the forms at the lateral ends) finally finds its superb !

Leaving behind it the horribly sharp (a strengthening of the coarse contours) and peaty (a boil of grain) of its HD counterpart released in 2013, this UHD Dolby Vision transfer gains in addition a more open frame showing an additional image portion on the sides. The details are now much more organic (faces, clothes and decors), such as the cinematic texture, even though it is sometimes possible to detect the presence of a noise reducer from there.

The same applies to the colorimetric palette, much more natural (violet chromatic drifts are of ancient history) and less cold than in the past (greenness of gardens, red blood, carnation); for contrast values, so much more harmonious (cf. the richness of blacks and the purity of whites); and for light source differences, wonderfully more realistic (start with reflections on phones and blades).

SON – Don't answer the phone!

Incredibly energetic when his killer participates in the action, the VO proposed in DTS-HD MA 5.1 imposes itself as a robust soundtrack that knows its references on the tip of the finger.

The sound design resists the dreads of time (especially the frontal scene), the dialogues are clear, the dynamics are very engaging (the appearance of the title), the subtle atmospheres (birds, crickets) like the muscular effects (fire shots, physical contacts) are immersive, the score « bleeding » In the back and bass, particularly palpable, are not there to play.

Presented in 2.0 as when it was released, the VF SD obviously cannot compete with its multichannel consœur. Less extensive and terribly unbalanced, it balances noises far too pronounced in comparison to dubbing, as off next door. And for those who would complain, no, the voice of Emmanuel Curtil for the killer (a choice, how to say... Very questionable) did not sound better when it was delivered in DTS-HD MA 2.0 on the previous Blu-ray released by Studiocanal.

CONCLUSION – Do you like scary movies?

25 years after his debut in the theater, Wes Craven's psychokiller returns in a limited edition (if you opt for the steelbook) 4K Ultra HD ready to scream for him (but without too much VF conviction). Stay on the line!

Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia

Excellent movie! I'm fixing them all right now. 🙂 I'm a little scared for the next one without Wes Craven in command... we'll see.

Perso loves the first three and much less the fourth! It is true that past the surprise of the 1st the others become really more "meta" but I appreciate these deliberately comical and exaggerated pitfalls. I like the characters too.
