WORK - A nightmarish pajamas
In the absence of her parents, Trish invites some friends for a little girl's party. Their boyfriends, not being invited, seek to enter unexpectedly, determined to cause them a little fear. But an escapee from the psychiatric hospital will also participate in the party, accompanied by his infernal mechanical drill...
In the vein of Halloween and Friday 13, this cult slasher of the 80s written and directed by women (a notable fact since rare for the time) amuses the facets of the genre (which he exploits effectively) with his unmasked killer, his intrepid heroines (a predominantly female casting), his staggered humour and his sexual references from everywhere (cf. phallic weapon of crime). Precursor Scream, this sexy teen movie standing away from good-thinking and enjoying bloody murders is in fact a fun work, where behind the gaudriole hides a reflection (something limited but no less subtle) on the macho imagery of the slasher (carried on male impulses). A must for fans of the genre.
IMAGE - Girls
Relying on the 4K restoration of Shout Factory from the original 35 mm negative (an Ultra HD Blu-ray is available in the USA), this 1080p transfer with overall solid encoding (with few exceptions) gives a real young shot to photography (a diffuse hair).
The silver grain is well solved despite the discreet use of DNR, except the early generic (where slags persist) the defects of the film have been removed, and the pique even though a little soft displays details of a nice finesse (the skin grain, textile fibres) as well as a nice depth (in the changing rooms in particular).
The colorimetric palette that wants to be natural seems carefully calibrated (magenta drifts are rare) for firm and nuanced hues (rich blood effusions), contrasts remain harmonious if this is some black sometimes blocked (in extremely dark planes) and the exteriors are very pleasantly bright.
Aaaahhh!
In VO as in VF, the soundtrack 2.0 monophonic obviously shows signs of aging (such as acute gnashing) but is pleasant to listen to (clear and precise without distortion or parasitic breath) with its synth score and horrific effects (starting with the industrial noise of the mechanical drill).
For a better balance, the VO (recorded at a rather weak level) is to be preferred over its francophone (deafer) consœur since the voices are better integrated. It must be said that the dubbing of the VF is far too much emphasized to the detriment of many atmospheres.
CONCLUSION - Hand Drilling Massacre
Accompanied by the usual 24-page booklet designed by Marc Toulelec, this superb 3-window digipack edition has been invited to join the anxiety collection of Rimini Éditions. A boon for the greedy spectators of the genre who can (finally) take advantage of this proposal to slash separately in Blu-ray format (a first in France)... All the more so since the A/V benefits are good!
Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
