WORK – The Folding Family
Young and unconscious, five friends cross Texas on a minibus. They unknowingly enter a strange and unhealthy territory, in the image of the character they take in stop: a vicious and visibly degenerate being plagued by morbid obsessions. The latter soon became threatening...
A true matrix of the slasher, this founding work of modern horror cinema that takes a ruthless look at Texas, the ungrateful cradle of America, is a terribly unhealthy awakened nightmare that goes through decades without losing anything of its traumatic power.
IMAGE – How do you like your meat?
This 4K restoration supervised by Tobe Hooper makes it possible to find the film patina of Kodak Ektachrome shooting 16 mm low budget (a very thick grain), to benefit from an infinitely higher definition than HD editions (even if the « problems » In the past, the colours of the blues of the sky and the greens of the vegetation are much more vivid than in the past, and it is worth enjoying peasy blacks.
Without the least of the world betraying the craspec aspect of photography, this Dolby Vision presentation benefits significantly from this contribution. The large granularity is visibly finer, the blacks are finally deep at will (hunting through the woods increases in readability), the whites are clearly less overexposed (clouds recover from relief), the colorimetric palette acquires a new richness (Pam's mini red shorts is more scarmose, the colorimetric palette becomes more rich). « early morning » and above all, the images capture a raised luminosity which brings shine to the metal surfaces (the van body) and radiation (not just a little) to the various lights (the vehicle headlights, the sun, the lamps of the Sawyer house).
And if there are a few knuckles and small instabilities left on the master, the encoding is now much stronger (the macrobloc that was « lost » in the darkest corners of the frame could find its way back) than on UHD edition CSD published in 2016. What do you want to separate from it?
SOUND – Hurle Scream Queen, scream!
Obtained from the 7.1 remix operated by the director a few years ago, the VO Dolby Atmos (like the soundtrack DTS-HD MA 7.1 of the French record) gives the impression of listening for the first time to the horrors committed by Leatherface with so much openness.
The dynamics are high (a little too often), the spatialisation is balanced (vehicles in motion), the voices are clear, the surround effects are intelligently measured (electric generator) and the oppressive score is even more. As for the height scene, it diffuses small atmospheres (wind, insects) that accentuate the feeling of immersion and above all, reinforces the impact of two key sequences (the presence of people on the first floor and the swinging of the chainsaw at the very end).
Even more frightening, the soundtrack Auro-3D uses a greater aggressiveness, « Lower level » more airy and more painful bass (cf. the violent closing of the metal door after the first murder).
CONCLUSION – Can we pull out the chainsaw?
If there are many reasons to review this classic of horror, the present edition Ultra HD Blu-ray remastered in HDR adds a high dose of pepper to this ordeal inspired by real facts!
