WORK - Followed by yourself

Marie, a twenty-year-old student, reviews her exams on the isolated farm of her best friend's parents. In the space of one night, a killer, who ignores his existence, assassinates in turn the members of this family...

Despite a clumsy and morally dubious final reversal, this survival craspec and openly sexualized in line with the classics of the 70s (ManiacandMassacre with chainsaw), brought a new breath to the French genre cinema. A visceral terror to the frontal staging and the impeccable castingCécile de FranceThe terrifyingPhilippe Nahonand breathMaiwenn) where the unhealthy atmosphere sweats everywhere and the hemoglobin comes out abundantly. In 2003,great horror filmmakerJust born!

IMAGE - Death is in the meadow

From a new scan of the original 35 mm negatives, this UHD Dolby Vision transfer with solid encoding and modified framing (for more content in 90% of cases) has clear differences from the previous Blu-ray (never published in France). Farewell outrageously excessive colors and artificial contrasts, hello neutrality!

Silver grain displays with a beautiful density, definition no longer « muddy » but of salvatory sharpness (apart from a few failed focus plans) and details benefit from an undeniable leap forward (faces, decorative elements, landscapes).

The colorimetric palette which is much more suitable (the orange filters of the day and greenish night are no longer a bad memory) appears as colder with otherwise richer and more nuanced hues (green meadows, red blood), contrasts have been judiciously adjusted for clearer shadows (furniture no longer lost in the ambient darkness) and pure whites (the clouds are much better defined), and the light sources shine with a brighter shine (the lighthouses, lighting of the toilets of the gas station, the flashlight).

SOUND - Ti amo 🎶

While it is obvious that some dialogues have been post-synchronized (the scene in 206 is the most glaring proof of this) and thus lack natural ones, the VF encoded in DTS-HD MA 7.1 is no less effective... Especially when she carefully reproduces the tropes of the genre (like the killer's heavy steps moving slowly in the country house).

Dynamics « Unreasonable » As soon as the violence comes (the appearance of the circular saw), the surrounding activity is not abandoned at the back of the drowsy van (the atmospheres of nature, the complaints of the victims), the voices are intelligible, the uncomfortable music of theFrançois-Eudes Chanfraultis well ventilated on the various channels and the LFE channel knows how to be oppressive.

CONCLUSION - Those impulses that dominate us

Reconnecting with a cinema then forgotten at its release, this tedious night at the end of terror is even more clumsy on 4K Ultra HD support (a/V performances that take their coming out). An admirable (triple) edition mediabook that celebrates in the best of ways the 20 years of this must-see of French horror. Cocorico!

Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
