Audience award for the best Asian film : My Daughter is a zombie of Pil Gam-sung
Jubilee and special edition for this NIFFF sauce 2026; After the toxic management charges and an audit carried out within the team, the head of the festival changed completely. Festival programmer Kate Reidy becomes artistic director and Hugues Houmard administrative and operational director. A fundamental change that drastically reduced the time available to the festival for programming choices, which may explain a slightly less flamboyant selection than last year.
Despite these turbulences, the NIFFF maintains the course with an anniversary edition rich in definite proposals. If some road outputs glaze the programming (we will talk below about Quince and his strange pro-life speech or disaster Souls in pain), the 129 or so selected works from more than 33 countries offer an extensive panorama of world genre cinema. The less political theme chosen this year (« Birthday »against « Eat the rich » or « Hospital and care ») does not prevent the festival from addressing powerful themes that irrigate this edition: maternity, the dictatorship of performance (Deadline), the theme of domestic violence and toxic relationships in general (Blood on Snow, Evil Dead Burn...), the heavy colonial heritage (Hen), construction by fiction (Teenage Sex and Death at camp Miasma).
Recent films were accompanied by a plethora of propositions in the best of genre cinema in the past years. Thus, Mulholland Drive, Projected in the open air accompanied a Rob Grams conference of Frustration. In the anniversary selection, we could (re)see Alice in Wonderland in drawing-animated, Bloody Birthday, Nope, Parasite or Sisters de De Palma. Two more event sessions sparkled the festival: a lively session of the Rocky Horror Picture Show with dress-code Wear Something Your Mother Would Hate, or a movie concert for Donnie Darko.
This anniversary edition also blows its candles in the company of the fantastic fine flower of the imagination. Thus, it is S.S. Rajamouli to present the sessions of the RRR and Bahubali, while the awesome Eega is projected for the first time in Helvetic lands. With him, Bertrand Mandico – who brought to Cannes his latest Roma Elastica – presented a selection of his work to the Neuchâtel public. The director also gave MaG an interview, soon to be found on our YouTube channel. These decks of the fantastic contemporary were accompanied by the rising voice of the British fantasy Samantha Shannon, but also by John Howe, the artist behind all the visual adaptations of Tolkien. Based in Neuchâtel, he is currently working on the Amazon series The Rings of Power. In short, from the beautiful world to the lake to enjoy the multitude of sessions and conferences exploring all the nuances of the fantastic contemporary. This year, the video game was also in the spotlight with a scholarly lecture on the series Castlevania which celebrates its half century in 2026.

Nightborn

Hanna Bergholm, director of the very good Egō, we come back with a film of maternal horror, cross-cutting theme of several works of this NIFFF 2026. One guesses a scale change in his cinema, with the transition to English (mostly) and the recruitment of an actor identified in the person of Rupert Grit (alias Ron, in Harry Potter). The scenario is relatively simple, based on a couple embodied by Grint and Seidi Haarla (who played in the awesome Compartment No 6) decided to change their lives. They decide to raise their newborns in the countryside and then settle in an old family home in the heart of the Finnish forest.
The scenario is not without a reminder Mother or, more recently and always with Jennifer Lawrence, Die, My love. The brio, on the other hand, has faded. The film is more annoying than it scares or disturbs, and the scrupulous examination of family neurosis becomes more blurred than in his first film. Level achieved, Nightborn seems also to be formatted... The photograph is fair but rather neutral, some scenes type completely next door (one thinks in particular of a forest scene that is very « Wounded Willow » of the poor, to stay in the theme Harry Potter). We'll come out with the impression that we're already starting to forget. Any feature film that will certainly not print its brand in this 2026 NIFFF cuvée.

Sanguines

Film post covid par excellence, Sanguine mobilizes body horror codes to better denounce the burn-out of the medical world. Margot is an intern in emergency medicine. As she undergoes full pressure management, she discovers new disturbing pathologies in her patient. Incarnate by Mara Taquin whom we met at NIFFF, Margot is a character for whom the body is an outlet. The Belgian actress delivers a performance based entirely on the martyred female body to better support the infernal pace imposed by the classic cocktail of management and capitalism. Like this scene of introduction to fastfood, where an employee farts the lead, the body is treated like meat that is carefully crushed on the grill. Test of resilience that the system prefers to present under the beautiful light of meritocracy, Sanguine Covers an acerbic critique of our time. Without matching the subtlety of the last Coralie Fargeat from which he draws a substantial part of his graphic ideas, Sanguine Marries well enough black humour and horror so that it is strongly advised to support its release scheduled for 28 October.

Evil Dead Burn

If a short post-session text is better than a long speech, don't hesitate to take a look at the full NIFFF live article on Evil Dead Burn. But to remain concise, it must be admitted that the Vaniček version (Vermins) of the saga rises easily to the height of the bloodthirsty pane of Álvarez released in 2013.
We can regret thatEvil Dead, still incubated by Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell (both producers), does not offer more freedoms and opts for a greyish photograph that is quite damaging to the work. But besides that, Sébastien Vaniček delivers a hell of a horrific slice of action, with gore that works and a female character embodied by the great Souheila Yacoub, far from the clichés of the genre. Evil Dead Burn does not miss his target and confirms a little more the French director who, hopefully, will not be eaten by Hollywood studios. A very nice surprise of this NIFFF 2026!

Film in black and white, taisy to wish and slow-burn... A big trap programmed in a suffocating room and within a huge competition, with hordes of festivalgoers in debt for hours of sleep? Well, not at all! The South African film directed by Nico Scheepers Then impresses with his staging, his black and white photograph playing subtly with the shadows and the interior/external contrast, and a scenario that unfolds like a trap for the spectator.
If it necessarily takes a second viewing to capture the subtext of the feature film, certainly exploring a so-called colonial in the strange dystopic counterworld it depicts, Hen Take the spectator to the throat. It must be said that the raw violence of his plans and the impressive actor game of the kid (the excellent Dawian van der Westhuizen) help complete and immediate immersion. On paper, it was not the most attractive film in the selection. However, he finished at the top of the list of works seen during this 25th edition!

Souls in pain

Souls in pain are those of the spectators who, after worshipping Pandemonium and his three independent tales, totally disillusion in front of the exit road which is this feature film. In fact, Quarxx returns to us with a film of more than two hours, dedicated to Jacob: half-carrier, half-man of faith, he travels the campaign to kill (slowly) the infected of Black Evil, a strange disease that turns them into zombies greedy for dead flesh. If he is sadistic with these infected, he is just as tyrannical with his daughter and wife...
Unfortunately, Souls in pain will never manage to connect its narrative arches, giving us the impression of being a rough seam of several poorly arranged shorts. Worse, the accumulation of clichés in the script and in the writing of the characters gives birth to a feature film reac, from another time, where the characterization of the female characters is just dismaying. The whole masturbated with a will to provoke a Gaspard Noah downhill from Prozac and a heavy-handed humour oscillating between Dubosc and Bigard, it can be said that it was not much appreciated Souls in pain…

The Spanish filmmaker Alberto Vázquez with whom we exchanged at Annecy in 2022 reprints the graphic style of his previous fable, Unicorn Wars, to propose a new story still so dark about humanity. Behind her childish graphics, Decorado is a black film par excellence. Arnold, unemployed, decides to stop taking his daily pills, supposed to keep the working population in a state of bliss. Gradually, he sees his world offending as a simple element of the decor. As usual, Alberto Vázquez draws heavily from authors such as Orwell and Huxley on whom an aesthetic of the Happy Tree Friends. A mix of genres always so amazing! Decorado is a subversive and devilishly intelligent film to reserve for those who do not fear depression!

Saccharin

A bad girl in her body, the promise of a miracle remedy, everything that turns into a nightmare. The concept of Saccharin is simple and in the vein of body-horror with sauce The Substance or The Ugly Stepsister. Even more promising, she is the director of the great Relic who attacks it, Natalie Erika James. Unfortunately, the film distributed in France by Shadowz Hard to satisfy us completely. The shots are licked, the actresses are all quite brilliant (starting with Midori Francis, who plays the main character) and some horrific ideas come out. But Saccharin is lost in his accumulation of narrative threads, until he loses sight of (almost) his horrific side completely. His message becomes blurred, the finale falls flat and the two hours of the feature film are definitely felt... It's a shame, because it's pruned all its lengths and refocused on its main concept, Saccharin Could have been a much more striking B series.

In Latin America and especially Mexico, Quinceañera is a popular celebration of the transition to adulthood of girls. In this coming of age At the crossroads of telenovelas and a failed B series, two inseparable friends see their friendship put to the test, while one of the two falls pregnant by a supernatural creature. Despite some rather successful tone breaks on the first half of the film, Quince switch to the reac film with a stinking message. Like a foretaste of Bollorean cinema waiting for us, Quince Almost could have found its place in a fundamentalist Catholic festival dedicated to gender. A gruesome film that will address female desire only in the tone of the joke, as if only the princess dream had a vocation to exist only through male libido. Yes, we saw a Mexican prolife film in Neuchâtel and we still wonder how it was selected at the NIFFF.

After Oddity who had already caused NIFFF to sweat, Damian McCarthy returns to Neuchâtel's (less glamorous) cruise to present his latest horror film, Hokum. A horrific writer to Stephen King (incarnate by Adam Scott) is lost in the bottom of Ireland, where he wants to disperse the ashes of his parents. He finds a hostel where they had spent their honeymoon and decides to sleep... Evil took it!
DHokum, you should not expect anything other than a generous ghost train session. There was no case of sharp-cut cinema, nor of a revival of genre, on the contrary. But Damian McCarthy pushes so far his mastery of tension and his play with jumpscares that the viewing of the film can only be fun. Brilliantly written characters, chiseled dialogues, well-feeling humour and moments of unbreathable tension make the almost two hours of the feature film run into a finger slap. If the scenario suffers from some ease, it is easily forgiven so much the ride It's fun!

Express criticism for a film in front of which we refused a barrier, the heat wave and seeing it at the end of the festival not helping. Philippine director P.R. Monencillo Patindol Indeed, offers an ultra arty film, playing with the monochromes of color in a delaid aesthetic quite stimulating. Unfortunately, the very slow pace and confused history against the background of violence will have been right of us. Only left to (re)discover I very an inch when my father died in other conditions and with a more rested head so as to be able to offer a more informed opinion.

Imposters

American Caleb Phillips proposes with Imposters a story halfway between Nightborn chronographed above, and Redux Redux discovered in a previous edition and now available on Shadowz. In fact, a couple settles in the countryside to raise their offspring (again!), when, during a party of neighbours, their child gets kidnapped. Weeks pass and the couple's wife ends up finding their kid safe. Except that the husband increasingly suspects that the baby his wife brought back is not theirs...
Imposters is ultra-efficient, and offers a multiverse story (like Redux Redux and as a sacred tripotée of films of the current production) rather agreed but very correctly realized. Without spoiling, the feature film will invoke backrooms and liminal spaces in its aesthetic journey to the benefit of a series of very successful and anxious scenes. If Imposters is no more than a very effective entertainment film, it is far from being an impostor in this selection of NIFFF 2026.

Teenage Sex and Death at camp Miasma

We didn't like it. I Saw the TV Glow presented in the 23rd edition of NIFFF, which seemed to only want to flatter our nostalgic instincts by flooding his neon plans and a wilted vibe heighties. Jane Schoenbrun takes a big step forward with this Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, rereading queer and meta of the reign of the slasher which fits into its trilogy of the media. Iel presents an alter ego in the person of Kris (Hannah Einbinder), an intelligent director who wishes, for his second film, to attack the franchise of cult slashers « Camp Miasma ». To do this, she goes to meet the original final girl of the first part, embodied by the awesome Gillian Anderson.
Very funny and generous in its gore effects as well as in the ringe as Schoenbrun amuses to distil in the plans (paroxystically the long scene of an Zoom exchange that puts to the test the zygomatics), the feature film stomps to dismember the genre of the slasher and its codes from another time. Never blazing, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma It could be annoyed by its side, of course, by a nobrilist strand and its meta construction which makes it de facto an artificial hair. It is without counting on its second degree pester that makes it one of the most interesting queer films in the selection!

Eisuke Naitō proposes with Blood on snow a rereading of the myth of the Snow Woman. The classic theme of the J-Horror, inscribed in a context of toxic relationship where a couple and their child go to the country at the bedside of a father with dementia. If the plans are rather well cared for, the photograph worked to capture the glacial whiteness that innerves each plan and the interesting sound design, the film lacks a breath to take us totally. The scenario remains confused and the tension will struggle to crack within two hours of the feature film. Not unpleasant, not significant either, Blood on Snow will leave no indelible trace (blood) in this Asian selection of NIFFF 2026!

Four bodybuilders, a fatal woman, a dirty detective, you don't need more than that. 4 Tigers to embark on his stronghold film through a devastating humor. If it happens to us emblematically from Thailand the cinema author of Apichatpong Weerasethakul and its dreamy gliding atmospheres, Khom Kongkiat Khomsiri proposes the exact opposite. A film without time dead, angry, calibrated for box office and franchise. Fighting film peaks are not reached as for other selection proposals (examples) The Furious) and it does not avoid a few lengths, but 4 Tigers manages quite well to embark his spectator in a lighter film with ultra-attaching characters.

In 1870, the sheriff of a small town in Wisconsin struggled to hold his town, left out by the threat of a deadly disease that decimated his fellow citizens. Dara Van Dusen offers a desperate film, where we witness, powerless, the collapse of a community where moral dilemmas arise. Tightened format, ultra-worked photography, arty aesthetics, A Prayer for the Dying sets the contours of a rather striking apocalyptic western. Filmed in Slovakia, the feature film renews the genre, proposes a more symbolic reading of it making it possible to confront personal perdition (family break-up), community (death decimates the village) and global (an immense fire threat) which is not without recalling our own condition... A rather impressive proposal, especially for a first feature film!

Carton full at the Vietnamese box office, Phi Phong: The Blood Demon We've been somewhat disconcerted. First we were a little surprised to see the projection stamped with the watermark of the NIFFF to trace the recipient. Then, despite a few shots and a photograph that is particularly careful at times, the film blows hot and cold with a chaotic narrative that left us on the tile. We get lost too quickly in this story of shamans and exorcism where we struggle to grasp the stakes. As they say in the middle, the Phi Phong, it's not very fifu...

Gaua (The Night)

In the heart of the Basque Country of the XVIIInd century, a young woman fleeing her husband who is guessed violent sinks into a dark forest. She meets three elderly women who tell her local stories. Paul Urkojo Alijo's film borrows a lot from Labyrinth of Pan and the best of Guillermo Del Toro's fantastic universe. Each tale follows with delight and we let ourselves be carried away by original creatures far from the tropes of the genre. When the epilogue suddenly manages to connect each of the stories, the story takes on an unexpected political dimension on sabbath canvas. A skillful way to subvert a simple story of witches into a feminist tale, Gaua would have deserved a place of choice on the NIFFF list. It's too bad he left.

More than any other category, selection Third Kind has the taste of politics. Certainly one of the bitterest films in this selection, Hong Kong's Kiwi Chow film suffered from censorship in his country for « against national security ». And because of this, the film leaves no room for hope when it depicts the world of school competition from an early age. In preparation for the end-of-year exams of a prestigious Hong Kong high school, an anonymous letter breaks all the precarious balance of the system. If the exams are not cancelled, a student will die.
Violent criticism of the social credit in the Chinese neighbour and the cult of competition, Deadline is a corrosive film that keeps taking unexpected turns. Individualism, the virtue par excellence of the liberal system, is facing the stalemate of a system in which everyone is the victim of his or her own condition. Like a permanent Milgram experience, each claim contaminates those who keep quiet. A brilliant film that we hope to see in theaters!

Blades of the Guardian

Choreographer Yuen Woo-ping to whom he owes part of the action scenes of Fist of Legend, Matrix or Kill Bill, returns to the wuxia with a popular blockbuster adapted from the famous eponymous manhua. There are archetypes of monolithic characters at the crossroads of western and samurai. The film savors itself as a candy with successful choreographies on most of the film. If the lights could have been more worked out not to give this side cosplay to the costumes, we let ourselves embark by its lightness and this guilleret tone where the action never suffers from any time dead. Entertainment all the more honest and rejoicing!

We no longer present S.S.Rajamouli, legend of Indian cinema, symbol despite him of the NIFFF where each pre-session of the festival is entitled to its « Bahubali » The audience picked up the choir. The filmmaker was invited to honour this 25nd NIFFF edition. For the occasion, the festival had programmed its filmography with Eega, certainly one of his most barred films of the real movie. And because of this, it's not every day that we're following the deaths of a murdered and reincarnated young man... fly. 145 minutes of film punctuated with scenes all more unlikely than each other. With hindsight and some sense of derision, we amuse ourselves with this unlikely farce where a young woman is stuck between two Stalkers international level, questioning (once it is not customary) the taste of Indian cinema for the most sexist tropes. Eega have also launched a big debate among some alcoholic festivalgoers who were wondering if Eega was a feminist film (authentic anecdote). Dear readers, let us remember that absinthe abuse is not recommended for health!

Light Pillar

In the series « Hello sadness », Light Pillar occupied a prominent position at NIFFF. In a future in which human relations are only consumed through a virtual reality helmet, a concierge is lost in the limbos of digital. Even his cat seems dubative when he gets lost in the virtual world where he meets a young woman. Hard to produce a colder film: Light Pillar maintains a clinical atmosphere where the economy of words aims to give way to a poetry of the permanent non-event. The film by Chinese filmmaker Xu Jingwei, alternating between traditional animation phases and filmed sequences in silver, had an original idea that he could not exploit until the end. Despite some good directing ideas, the film has somewhat exhausted us by its slowness, which is to systematically confuse it with the word « poetry ».

Presented in Asian competition, You are the movie was one of the most daring films in the selection on paper. Madoka writes plays, Kazuma is a musician. When both decide to go to the cinema, they discover that they can interact through the screen. With this malice-filled meta device, the Japanese filmmaker declines his concept until exhaustion. Despite a great concept, Makoto Ueda is too easily thrown into an epilogue « kamoulox » A little easier compared to so much ingenuity during the first part of the film so much more inspired. A good moment, however, but as the feeling of having missed his original subject.

Fighting is a fluidity to the test and The Furious is distinguished by his castan scenes in teams. One of the actors was even inspired by the style of this old man. Donkey Kong. Without revolutionizing the formula and overcoming such models as The Raid 2 or City of Darkness, The Furious is a tasty family movie.

In 2022, the film The Tower had aroused an avalanche of virulent criticisms on social networks without any real understanding of why so much hatred was shed for a nice but perfectable film. Three years later, it was we who came out unrecognized by this projection that cochoed almost all the boxes of the 50-year-old crisis. What happens in the Canary Islands remains in the Canary Islands are we blown with big hoofs. We find Benoît Magimel in the role of an old broken card broken by years (and liters of glouse), a troubled figure that helps Romy (Pom Klementieff) for her beautiful eyes as a fragile woman. The film multiplies the tracks with the awkwardness of a phacochère one night of rut, all to end up with an epilogue that confirms our doubts about a calibrated scenario on some old rebuked fantasies.

What a pleasure to find Sang-ho Yeon at the Last train to Busan. At a biotechnology congress, sudden contamination plunges a Seoul skyscraper into total chaos. We find the logic of the confinement of the first films of Romero married to that of Danny Boyle's infected. Sang-ho Yeon succeeds in renewing the grammar of the films of apocalypse with ingenuity. Low hat for the scenes with the infected who cavalcade at all speed on four legs! Rhythmed from beginning to end as the South Korean cinema demands, Colony Don't fail to surprise us by pushing all the sliders to the fullest, even if to give the feeling that the enemy modelled on the fool cheats, so much its fulgurating evolution exceeds any human logic.
