WORK – That night, "he" came back...
Halloween Night 1963. Young Michael Myers rushes into his older sister's room and stabs her wildly. After his gesture, Michael was silenced and detained in a psychiatric asylum. Fifteen years later, he escaped from the hospital and returned to the scene of his crime. He then attacks teenagers in the city.
Not content with imposing the slasher codes « Modern », launched the career of John Carpenter and introduced The Shape, the implacable mutic death machine, the first Halloween continues to be a major work of horrific genre to surgical staging and well exploited characters where anguish and terror rise crescendo. Often copied, never matched!
IMAGE – Who's behind the mask?
This UHD Dolby Vision transfer, resulting from a new 4K scan of the 35 mm film, floodes the screen with details and removes (finally) the warm hues of the old versions to find the cold and more natural palette of the photo of the time (austere and dark)... And it's quite normal since it's Dean Cundey, the director of photography, who took care of the calibration (approved by John Carpenter).
The source is clean and leaves a low-noise silver grain (if not in some dark planes), the emphasis has been on contrasts with more intense blacks and brighter whites, and the high dynamic range allows the lighting (candles) and other reflections to really come alive.
SON – Knock Knock, Trick Or Treat?
The VO Dolby TrueHD 7.1 is effective even if it is not very powerful, and does not hesitate to swing ambiences on the surrounds to extend the sound field surprises with its frontal opening. The dialogues are clear, the basses deep and the synth score still as threatening.
Presented in SD, where it is proposed in DTS-HD MA 2.0 on the French Ultra HD Blu-ray, the original mono VO has been perfectly cleaned and delivers clear sounds not without a certain amplitude.
CONCLUSION – Let the Myers win!
