WORK - Alice in the land of nightmares
In 1957, a young boy named Jason died drowned at Crystal Lake camp. In 1958, the two leaders of the camp were killed. In 1980, on the evening of Friday 13, the monitors of the center disappear one after the other...
Surfing on the success of the1st Halloween, this 100% mercantile creation that picks all its ideas from the greatest (Bloody Bay, Psychosis, Black ChristmasandThe Teeth of the SeaNevertheless, it remains a founding slasher (and the first fruits of an inconceivable saga) skillfully exploiting the fears of conservative America vis-à-vis the youth of the period (forcely drugged and fornicating with impunity?).
And in spite of young preys of crippling nonchalance (including oneKevin BaconSo beginner) and a simplistic scenario, serial murders still work as well by the intelligence of the staging (coming beyond a meagre budget) and the realism striking makeupTom Savini (Maniac). Before the icon of horror, its genesis!
« I'm the messenger of God! You're doomed if you stay here! This place is cursed. Cursed!! It's got death curse. »
Ralph the fool
IMAGE - Blood Lake
Result of a new 4K scan of the negative 35 mm (a shot by the chief operatorBarry AbramsUsing Panavision Panaflex cameras and spherical lenses, this UHD Dolby Vision (moving cinema and uncut version) transfer to the tough HEVC compression (an average bitrate of 64.5 Mbps) still blows hot and cold to totally convince.
The return to 1.85 format (compared with 1.78 in the past) is a good thing, as the real contribution in terms of definition (large plans) and finesse (close plans). Trees, vegetation, cabins, decoration, clothing and facial diversity thus benefit from a different texture complexity. But while silver granularity is well restored in most cases, it becomes strangely noisy in some skies (at the beginning) and abnormally diminished in American plans (with this pulpy aspect so characteristic of poor handling of DNR).
The colorimetric palette has brighter hues (a greater saturation) with glowing primaries (the surrounding greenery and red bloodshed) and an assanity carnation. Unfortunately, the whites are now so aggressive that they dazzle for no reason (like the pontoon)...
A problem due to the contrasts, so pushed to impress that they forget the realism of the light sources (nearly exceeding the 900 nits with high luminances whose clipping is visible on the clouds). By contrast, the darkness is finally suffocating* and no longer clarified. Much darker than in the past with its impenetrable blacks, the night is now really (it takes torches and lamps to see something) even if many details go by the hatch. MaxFALL was measured at 263 cd/m2 and MaxCLL at 1628 nits (is that reasonable?).
* A change which will undoubtedly be debated but which, in view of the agonizing forest environment, greatly accentuates the ancestral fear associated with darkness. In fact, this great night massacre plays better hide and seek!
SON - You Qaeda 🎶
If the absence of the original monophonic soundtrack remains unfortunate, the ambitious VO 5.1 (24-bit, 3371 kbps) expands its two channels with remarkable transparency for a truly authentic multichannel spacing (the atmospheric sounds come to life with a lot of natural) to the surrounds fully connected (rain, wind, wildlife, vehicles).
The clarity of the frontal scene is bluffing (the piercing screams, the iconic score ofHarry Manfredini), the dialogues are perfectly exuded by the power plant and the support of the LFE channel, even if discreet, appreciable since never artificial in the bottom of the spectrum.
Less distressing and terribly over-yearly in its rendering (a flat mix with deaf voices), the VF 2.0 dual mono (224 kbps) is only there to remind the « Old charm » VHS.
CONCLUSION - Pending his Boogieyman
In spite of a necessarily dated classicism, this iconic maddive revenge signedSean S. Cunningham (Deep Star Six) established the mythological bases of his successful franchise (his world-famous star killer, armed hand of U.S. puritanism, being introduced only in the second part) entirely dedicated to the murder of libidos libidos (if you fuck, you die), unworthy of living since « Wicked » (!?).
And crystallizing all the codes of the slasher alone (of course understood), it is on 4K Ultra HD support that she finds her best resurrection (thanks to A/V services where the threat is more serious). Take your stuff, the holiday colony is waiting for you!
Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
