WORK – By his courage the world will change!

In the near future, the United States has become a dystopian federal government in which each of the 12 districts must send a boy and a girl to fight at an annual television event, « Hunger Games ». The only way out of these games for the « Tributes » is to kill or be killed. When Katniss's little sister is drawn to participate, she decides to take her place...

Hunger Games

Faithful to the first novel of the trilogy The Hunger Games written by Suzanne Collins, this film adaptation is an initiatory quest for science fiction (a dystopia to be more precise) carried by the epatante Jennifer Lawrence and by the strength of her script, which mixes very skillfully (the editing is excellent) and with a lot of intelligence action, violence (soft), tension, romance and reflection (the rebellion against a dictatorship), within a rich and disturbing universe where intimate moments (the psychology of the characters is never left aside) are as important as games. A great success that allows us to enjoy a saga of high quality.

Hunger Games – Ignition

Even more faithful, Ignition is a better opus than the previous one (which was already a great success) where the more supported dystopic side of the universe set up, the more extensive and laid realization (good-bye the shaky cam), the increase in the visible budget on screen (the gigantism of the sets), the evolution of the relationship between Katniss and Peeta (intimate moments are once again as important as the action scenes), the accuracy of the performance (Jennifer Lawrence is still as excellent) and the more glaring tension of the games (pernicious traps), make it an indispensable episode for all fans of the books but also a very good entertainment of science fiction for others. The rebellion against the Capitol dictatorship is more than ever launched!

Hunger Games – The Revolt: Part 1

Third and penultimate part of the film saga adapted from Suzanne Collins' bestsellers, The Revolt: Part 1 Adolescence and adulthood. A resolutely darker dystopia with certain dramatic tension and a captivating insurrectional atmosphere, she focuses on the psychological path of her charismatic heroine thrown at the heart of a media propaganda war, where the gravity of the events she is going to experience and the emotions she will feel will allow her to emancipate for good. The final battle against the Capitol dictatorship is fast approaching!

Hunger Games – The Revolt: Part 2

Action, emotion and a strong political message, for this very dark but somewhat long closing episode.

IMAGE – The people will look!

Hunger Games

A detailed image (the gap is evident on the close-up of the faces), fine and contrasting (it was more variable on the Blu-ray) which delivers a bewitching depth of field, a colorimetric palette of rare richness and an exquisite 35 mm grain (more visible than in HD).

The colours are more nuanced with brighter primaries (a more realistic blue sky) and better saturated secondary ones (greener foliage), the white ones are more intense (the holding of the Peacekeepers, the clouds), the reflections on the metal objects are brighter (the Katniss arc), the lights have been clearly boosted with neons not afraid to consume (the game control room is even dazzling) and a radiant solar light, the flames are more ardent and the dark scenes contain better defined shadows.

Hunger Games – Ignition

Captured in Super 35 mm but also in IMAX 65 mm for scenes in the arena (the transition from the cinemascope ratio 2.40 to the most immersive ratio 1.78 remains an exclusive Blu-ray), this UHD Dolby Vision transfer based on a 4K DI is never taken in default. The precision is ideal (the fabric of the costumes is better defined), the details are excellent (remarkable close-ups), the depth of field is incredible (see the arena), the unsaturated colors and/or full of life are resplendent, the contrasts are strong and the copy immaculate.

Even if less demonstrative than on the first part (photography is greyer and darker), HDR and WCG technologies also do wonders here. The opening scene offers more bluish hues, the festivities are now bathed in purple, the colorimetric palette is generally more complete (primarily more vibrant), the whites are brighter, the brightness level is increased, the light sources are more dazzling and the blacks are much more horny (it is very visible in the tropical jungle). A visual slap!

Hunger Games – The Revolt: Part 1

Compared to the HD version, this UHD Dolby Vision transfer delivers a better definition (the textures of the walls, the debris of District 12), better defined details (the hair of Katniss), a more marked depth of field, even more vibrant colors and reinforced concrete contrasts.

From the more intense colorimetric palette (blue sky, green leaves and skin colours) to the more opaque blacks (which do not absorb details), to more striking whites, brighter lighting (monitors, neons, etc.) and metal weapons with better designs, all gain shine and readability.

Hunger Games – The Revolt: Part 2

The best UHD upgrade (but not the most marked use side of the HDR) with remarkable clarity, amazing definition (the writings on posters and holograms), meticulous details (the wear of Snow's old furniture), neat colors, very balanced contrasts and rich blacks.

The colorimetric palette is more realistic (the pink shades of the flesh) and precise (the bright blue sky, the scarlet blood), the whites are a little brighter, the metallic reflections are brighter (cf. the weapons), the sun is more blinding (the backlight during the public execution), the artificial lightings are stronger (the Tigris apartments) and the darker, darker scenes, do not sacrifice any element of the frame.

Dolby Vision vs. HDR10

Having previously tested US editions published by Lionsgate Films, I took advantage of the French release to release the discs (with VFQ Dolby Digital 5.1 but without STFR) and organize a face-to-face between the two HDR formats!

If the differences are not really clear, the Dolby Vision encoding proposed by the publisher FR Metropolitan Video Yet displays slightly deeper colours, more flourishing specular reflections and better management of the finest details in the shadows (better delimited to say).

SON – Hanging Tree Resonate!

Hunger Games

A possible immersive Atmos soundtrack (surrounding activity is very pronounced) whose precision of spatialization (the palpable atmospheres of the forest) and the surprising subtlety of mixing (living in the control room) are equal to the dreadful power of dynamic and bass (the blast of the fire is devastating). The height effects are also legions (the dome effect guaranteed in the arena) with applause from the crowd, gunshots, singing of mocking gays, rustling of trees, agitation of wildlife (the swarm of killer bees) and commemorative music.

Far from being just a spectator, the VF that remains valiant struggles with good weapons (size and development).

Hunger Games – Ignition

An Atmos track whose formidable dynamics, the precision of spatialization, the clarity of dialogues, the richness of the effects, the regular activity of the height scene (air transport, crowds, official speeches, wildlife in the arena, lightnings), the calculated sobriety of surrounds, the enveloping score and the careful use of the LFE channel (especially at the bottom of the spectrum) will please the fans of big sounds. A slam!

Spectacular despite the loss of the dome effect, VF is not ready to lay down arms (power and immersion).

Hunger Games – The Revolt: Part 1

Even though the story offers little action, this Atmos mix remains ultra-immersive with clean dialogues, a formidable spatialization (the cavernous echoes of the underground), a wide dynamic range, realistic atmospheres, destructive effects (the attack on the hospital), surround speakers and aerial sounds (the bunker's alarm, the impact of missiles at the entrance to District 13) that give to heart joy, a wide score and devastating bass.

Apart from the absence of the verticality of the sound, it is generally the same with the VF which shows a beautiful energy and a certain development.

Hunger Games – The Revolt: Part 2

A little less spectacular and energetic than its elders, this mix Atmos still remains a frank success. The voices are clear, the dynamics know how to prevail when the action demands it, the effects as the atmospheres are always well placed, the activity around is omnipresent, the upper scene is perfectly scripted (the attack of the mutants in the sewers of the Capitol), the music is enveloping and the bass of the most powerful.

Unsurprisingly, the VF continues to fight (the spatialization is very good and the magnitude is striking) despite the loss of its wings.

CONCLUSION – Forever the fire will burn!

While President Snow has the hand on television, used as a means of propaganda to justify and legitimize the power in place and the violence he shows, the resistance of a whole bruised people forms at the heart of this integral 4K Ultra HD fire all flames!

Hunger Games – La Saga

Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia

I loved very much the very first at the time. A little less his sequel. But he had an original direction.
