WORK - Origins of the Games

The young Coriolanus is the last hope of his lineage, the formerly rich and proud Snow family has now fallen into disgrace in a post-war Capitol. As the 10th Hunger Games approached, he was reluctantly assigned to be the mentor of Lucy Gray Baird, a tribute from District 12, the poorest and most despised of Panem...

Based on the excellent novel of Suzanne Collins, saga Hunger Games in the form of a prequel, devoting itself to the period of « Dark days » While the future president of Panem is just one of the mentors of the « Hunger Games ». The most accomplished part of the franchise, aesthetically (inspired retrofuturism) as well as scripturally (a powerful narrative with surprising thickness), this stoic blockbuster whose rare rays of sunlight emanate from the cursed (wrong) l ́idyl between the women's tribe of District 12 (the performer) Rachel Zegler) and a brilliant high school student from the Capitol (l Tom Blyth), imposes itself as a resolutely nihilistic dystopia which quickly commits itself, through its social and political dimension, to portray the mechanisms leading to fascism. A return to victorious sources!

« Mr. Snow, after everything you've seen in the world, tell us what Hunger Games are for? »

IMAGE - From white to dark

This solid UHD Dolby Vision transfer (a medium bitrate of 69 Mb/s), resulting from a 4.5K digital capture finalized in 4K, returns even more finesse, precision and relief than its counterpart 1080p the postwar Panem (very dark) where the greyness, devouring the decrepit walls of buildings evoking the mussolin era, dominates the verdony of a deserted nature.

The definition is right, the piqué has an even more formidable precision (make-up, hairstyles, costumes, natural and/or digital decorations) and colors, sepia in District 12 and blue with a cold trend in the Capitol, benefit from bolder primarys (red jackets, green meadows), new shades (brown and turquoise hues) and a slightly warmer carnation.

The range of contrasts is freed up with magnificently black outlets (for always detailed shadows) and divinely natural whites (shirts) where and light sources, elegant and subtle (any proportion kept, there are sometimes Terrence Malick in the light of day), gain in authenticity without the nit feeling the need for much flight.

SOUND - Nothing You Can Take From Me

Between emphasis and discretion, this Dolby Atmos soundtrack (no difference between VO and VF) delivers a significantly enveloping mix where the magnitude of the dynamic (see the sequence of attack) is close to the finesse of the multichannel distribution.

The environmental atmospheres (the crowd, the screens of the control room, the fauna and flora) like the pyrotechnic effects (fire shots, the big explosion) use all the channels with proven accuracy, the score of James Newton Howard As well as Lucy Gray Baird's songs, the dialogues remain perfectly clear on both tracks (the VF dubbing is well integrated) and the LFE channel punctuates the action of striking bass.

As for the acoustic verticality, which is already well sought after by rain, drones, the rustling of leaves and birds, it is memorable when it welcomes participants who enter the arena and sees the arrival of the tank filled with snakes.

CONCLUSION - An evolving dictator

Eight years after the revolt of Katniss Everdeen (the four films released between 2012 and 2015), this new Hunger Games always realized by Francis Lawrence returns to the youth of its main antagonist in a dark odyssey of cheating and betrayal that the present 4K Ultra HD, armed with A/V performances determined to fight to death, leads to victory!

Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
