WORK - Her Majesty the Flies

Several years have passed since the riots, and everyone is trying to resume their lives. But in the shadows, William and Charlotte are fomenting a plan that could upset the world order again.

Continuing to address the intelligence of its audience, this 4th (and last) season confirms at every moment all the ambition and richness of the series HBO established by Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan in 2016, regained its temporal complexity from the past, shaped new illusions (in order to question our perception of reality) and carried out a scenario shift to the Matrix reversing, to extend its questioning on the notions of free will, freedom and servitude through the prism of humanity (whether native or robotic).

The staging is sophisticated, the choral narrative learned, the imperial casting (Evan Rachel Wood, Aaron Paul, Thandiwe Newton, Ed Harris, etc.) and the (large) means deployed manifest. But following the lack of interest of the spectators who considered it too complicated, this (too?) ambitious series will not have a season 5 final. Nevertheless, a last chance to avoid extinction was given to human life... Especially since his co-creator doesn't seem to have said his last word.

« Some people choose to see ugliness in this world. I choose to see beauty. To believe that there is a meaning, a purpose. »

IMAGE - En route to the Sublime

This UHD Dolby Vision transfer with infallible HEVC encoding (an average bitrate of 61.3 Mb/s) dominates its 1080p counterpart in absolutely all fields, mainly from a 35 mm film capture finalized in 4K. As with the latter, the (rare) ratio changes (of 1.78 or 2.39 according to narrative requirements) are in the part.

Everything is more detailed (from facial hairiness to textile fibers to background decorations) and the increase in clarity is evident in the wide planes (the skyscrapers of the city, desert expanses). As for the silver texture, a beautiful homogeneity (its growth in the broad frame is an artistic will), it shows an increased refinement.

With a multitude of chromatic patterns (depending on the places and times visited), the reasonably futuristic colorimetric palette of the photograph (which in fact retains a certain realism) is richly nuanced (blues, greens, reds and oranges).

Very bright and better defined in the shadows (the Maeve chalet, the Westworld of « crazy years »), the images benefit wonderfully from HDR technology. Blacks gain in depth without being blocked yet, whites shine while revealing more of the high luminances (the windows of Olympiad Entertainment), and light sources in intensity (the day splashed with sun, artificial lighting of labs and tower).

SON - This is the story of life 🎶

Always supported by the worrying strangeness of the formidable score of Ramin Djawadi (Game of Thrones), this Dolby Atmos soundtrack (16-bit, 2775 kbps making the average of the three discs) reserved for the VO is as powerful as well distributed.

Dynamics are not lacking in momentum, ambient noise abounds (weather effects, crowds), spatialisation is spectacular (the shootings, the final of episode 7), the height channels systematically coincide with the events taking place on the screen (flies, security alarms, some means of transport), the basses are vigorous (explosions, tones of control) and the dialogues, precisely balanced with the rest of the mixing, are of great clarity.

Available in Dolby Digital 5.1 (640 kbps), the small VF Dolby Digital 5.1 (640 kbps) obviously does not have the weight with its reduced size, lower accuracy and underexploited LFE channel. Even if treated, dubbing is very moderately incorporated by its prominence.

CONCLUSION - Last Judgement?

While a touch of chaos adds to each of its iterations, this fourth chapter of the unfinished narrative loop Westworld (at least for now) finds its ultimate outcome in a lucid 4K Ultra HD whose brain death, because of A/V performances at the cutting edge of technology, is foreign to him!

Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
