Work – Back in the Matrix
Eighteen years after the events of Matrix RevolutionsThomas A. Anderson (alias Neo) no longer remembers anything and leads a life of normal appearance in San Francisco. He regularly goes to a psychiatrist to whom he tells his strange dreams and prescribes blue pills. After the reappearance of familiar faces and in search of answers, Neo returned to search for the white rabbit. He meets a certain Morpheus, who offers him the choice of staying in the Matrix and taking off.
Far from fan service easy despite references « hacked » in the trilogy, this disconcerting demake that works to defeat expectations while making a rejoicing finger of honor to the Hollywood industry (lMarvel par excellence), is a meta maze that deconstructs its own universe (myth?) to better appropriate it.
In the era of reboots and other automated suites, this rebellious blockbuster, which has stopped to self-analyse, without ignoring the action scenes (some already seen) and the visual effects (in order to divert once and for all) that have made its reputation, acts like a bug where the author's vision « pirate » The mercantile machine.
And if the pill is likely to be hard to swallow for a part of the public, this malinous provocation (no, it is not a result of the franchise) governed by love will make vibrate the heart and mind of those who will find the light at the end of the tunnel.
IMAGE – The other side of the mirror
The first part to be shot in digital (a 6K and 8K capture), Matrix Resurrections is paid a UHD Dolby Vision transfer (drawn from an intermediate 4K master) demonstration where the « update » vis-à-vis its HD counterpart is far from an illusion.
Taking advantage of increased sharpness and more robust compression (low light scenes are much less noisy), the details are illustrated by a precision of goldsmith thanks to an even more chiseled piqué. Seizing, close-ups like wide plans delight in a finesse that Blu-ray is only able to dream.
More colorful than ever (the Matrix has changed and is no longer « prisoner » and adopting natural light, the sometimes iridescent image benefits from a better saturated colorimetric palette (the freedom reds and the control blues), from optimized contrasts (see the shelter city of IO) to unfathomable blacks and whites of infinite purity (the training program), and from light sources noted (the sunrises/sunset, the heat of explosions, the night urban lighting, the light-emitting diodes of machines).
SON – Faith in Love
Proposed in Dolby Atmos in VO as in VF, this powerful and ultra-enveloping soundtrack (from the appearance of the lines of code) effectively supports narration.
The dynamics rotate at full speed (the shots fired, the confrontation on board the high-speed train), the dialogues are clear (the volume of the French dubbing is a little more extensive), the distribution of the effects/ambiences shows great generosity with an surround scene « overflowing » (the attack on the premises of the Deus Machina studio) and a notable vertical presence (the movements of the Mnemosyne, the rain, the arrival of helicopters, etc.), the score of Johnny Klimek and Tom Tykwer (already at work on Sense8 Wachowski) has body (especially during the final on the roof) and the LFE channel, even if it strikes less strongly than in the past, does not lack depth (the force shield of Neo).
CONCLUSION – Blue pill or red pill?
Through a different iteration, this new program that allowed the saving resurrection of a universe, ever more abundant, to the new levels of reading is to be discovered, more than ever, in 4K Ultra HD to open (large) our eyes and ears in order to decode the multiple codes of the Matrix. Take the red pill!
Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
