WORK – Some heroes are real
As soon as night falls, a stuntman becomes a car driver for the mafia. The combination is well run until the day when one of the breakers turns badly and drives him into an infernal chase. To save the one he loves, he will have to avenge those who betrayed him...
Crépuscular, romantic and deeply melancholic, this polar adapted from James Sallis's eponymous novel is staged with infinite grace, traversed by splendid poetic fulgurances (the elevator scene), dotted with scenes of action of a rare violence (the attack on the motel), carried by the breathtaking interpretation of the actors and rhythmic by an unforgettable original tape. A real master's coup for Nicolas Winding Refn, who signs, with this magnificent urban tale with gliding lyricism and atmospheric suspense, a masterpiece instantly cult.
IMAGE – On the night of Los Angeles
If the hyper-stylization of photography was only waiting for a 4K Ultra HD to express itself without restraint, the limitations of its capture as well as the new color calibration (performed by its director) may cause debate!
Entirely captured in digital 1080p, the image has few new details to deliver to us (it must also be said that the stitch was already surgically accurate in HD). However, better compression is required (or then, the old Blu-ray was a little filtered), many elements of the frame (including the background) are displayed with increased finesse. However, we admit that a very discreet over-sharpening reinforces certain contours... Fortunately, halos are rarely detectable.
Radially different, the colorimetric palette once neutral is now amber (the asphalt is no longer really grey)... For an over-the-year atmosphere that suits the film rather well. And rest assured that the shades are still richer with more vigorous primaries (especially red).
As for the more daring contrasts (cf. the incredible wide planes of the city in aerial view), they darken the frame somewhat while using otherwise more energetic light sources (such as the neons of the garage or the shines on the meters)... As a result, the light-obscurity is reinforced (the depth of the blacks and the brightness of the whites are even more striking) and more surprising, the noise once visible at the edge of the shadows disappears in the darkness.
SON – Silence is golden
The directionality is adroit (the passages of the helicopter during the introductive break) with the sober use but all in precision of the surrounds (road traffic), the bass box makes feel the spins of the engines, the shots are of a barely incredible power (the dynamic is of a high intensity), the enchanting electro-pop soundtrack is broadcast with divine care and the dialogues are harmoniously integrated. An auditory show as hovering as scotch!
CONCLUSION – Extreme driving ability
To celebrate his 10th birthday, « the pilot » laconics go at the highest speed by taking the wheel of an Ultra HD Blu-ray with the retouched body and the motor still as reliable!
