Drama with a genre film, Holly is a Belgian work presented in the official competition of the GIFF (Geneva International Film Festival).

Season of the Witch

Opening on Carpenterian synths, the film narrates the story of Holly, a lonely, silent teenager, rejected by many of her classmates. One morning, obeying a violent feeling, she refused to go to school. On the same day, a violent fire ravaged the school, taking with it several young students. Then born around Holly a certain fervor: the young woman would have powers...

Belgian director Fien Troch is not at its test stroke (Home in 2016, Kid in 2012...), but Holly, presented at the Mostra, will allow her young main actress Cathalina Geeraerts to win an interpretation prize. On the name-dropping side, let's add that the director was surrounded by Johnny Jewel to music, known for composing the musics of Drive, Lost River or Twin Peaks : The Return (only that!)

"Twin Peaks : The Return" (2017), by David Lynch

Agent Cooper to Carrie

And if in this music it is impossible not to hear some chords of the theme of Twin Peaks version BadalamentiIt is above all this soundtrack that gives Holly all its mystical dimension. Indeed, despite some hints (his comrades nickname Holly « The witch », his strange premonition...), the whole mysterious side of Holly is infused via the soundtrack which borrows a lot from the genre film, Carpenter in mind.

A kinship with the Twin Peaks by David Lynch and Mark Frost, which is true with the numerous absurdity incursions that create regular ruptures in the narration ofHolly, before again let the story continue its journey.

Yet if we evoke the flirting side with the fantastic and these absurd bursts, Holly is above all a drama tinted with a point of magical realism, than a real genre film. Yet within this coming of age we find a lot of what makes the salt of Carrie (version De Palma or version Stephen King, it is according to) and one awaits, according to the different situations that arise in Holly, the unleashing of horror that will blow over the small town of Chamberlain from King's novel. A horror that will never come...

In a nutshell, Holly is an interesting dramatic story, notably by his views on school harassment and what normality is when one is a teenager. It is, however, regrettable that it stretches in length (more than one hour forty-five while the format of an hour and a half would have been quite enough) and that it closes its story in fishtail. A nice discovery of the GIFF, which could have been a nugget if it did not suffer from these many small deficiencies.

Drinking the Stephen Kings as the apricot syrup of my native country, I first discovered cinema through its (often bad) adaptations. I'm married to Mrs. Wilkes as much as a persistent Stockholm syndrome, I am gradually opening up to videoclub films and B-series peasers.Today, I wander between my favorite cinemas, film festivals and the edges of Helvetic lakes much less calm than they look.
