WORK – A question of choice

Tris lives in a post-apocalyptic world where society is divided into five clans (Audacious, Erudits, Altruists, Sincers, Fraternals). At 16, she must choose her membership for the rest of her life. Rarity, her aptitude test is inconclusive: she is Divergent...

Divergent

Adaptation of the first volume of Veronica Roth's trilogy, Divergent is a fable of anticipation for young adults (which looks a bit on the side of Hunger Games) on the social domination and the quest for freedom, where the dystopic universe at once rich, complex and well structured, the malignant frame (not much sentimentalism) and even ambitious that sees its fearless heroine gradually emancipate, the well-characterized characters at the gross thickness, the committed actors (Shailene Woodley crève l ́screen), the conscientious staging, the continuous suspense and the effective action scenes, give only one desire... to discover the next film as soon as possible!

Divergent 2: Insurrection

If it gains in intensity (no dead time), this second opus richer in action, cascades and special effects loses in writing quality (and thus in interest), even though the intrigue (which treats in subtext of self-acceptance while continuing to question the partitioning of social classes and the quest for freedom) is strong in rebounds and the characters (incarnate by a cast always as effective) continue to be enhanced. Next up, quick!

Divergent 3: Beyond the Wall

Taking his promises and enriching a new playground (the outside world), this third opus under the visual influence of Tron and Oblivion proves to be a better built and more dynamic anticipatory film than the previous one. Unfortunately for the spectators, the end (mortal) has never seen the light out of the books!

IMAGE – Land of clans

Divergent

This is not the best UHD Dolby Vision transfer that is, but the differences with its HD counterpart are sufficiently perceptible to merit the name of Ultra HD Blu-ray.

The improvement of the definition puts an end to Blu-ray's aliasing (visible on the windows of the buildings during aerial planes), the fineness of the details and textures is increased, the depth of the field is wider, the colors with deliberately a little dull hues are more nuanced (yellow drifts are less present), the contrasts are significantly better (the darkest sequences are therefore more attractive) and the peps of the lights are new on this title (notably in the bar and during the « game » flag capture).

Divergent 2: Insurrection

As such, there is zero defect on the horizon on this UHD Dolby Vision transfer. The precision is surgical, there are details on a number of occasions, the bright colors (the territory of the Fraternels) or dull (the safe house of the sans-factions) are well restored and the contrasts are very fit.

But if he digs the difference on the side of the depth of the shadows (a better delimitation of the blacks), the colorimetric spectrum (larger grey-blue shades) and light sources (the lamps at dinner with the mother of Four, the neons in the Erodits lab), the differences with his HD counterpart are less in terms of resolution. There are many more subtle details (the pores of the skin, the texture of the tissues, the dilapidated walls), but you must not blink eyes to see them.

Divergent 3: Beyond the Wall

With formidable precision and bright clarity, this UHD Dolby Vision transfer just sublime delivers amazing colors, impressive contrasts and fabulous blacks.

Facing the Blu-ray, this 4K Ultra HD disc is better defined (it's very visible in the aerial planes of the arid desert or Chicago), leaves « living » more details (information on holographic screens), favours warmer and amber tones (the pink shades are more discreet and the red ones are more « Roasted ») while boosting primarys (green vegetation, blue sky, computer yellows), shines the brightness and/or reflections of light sources (sunset, Office lighting), and leans on richer blacks for dark scenes that gain in volume.

Dolby Vision vs. HDR10

Having previously tested the signed US editions Lionsgate Films, I took advantage of the French release to release the discs (without VF or STFR) and organize a face-to-face between the two HDR formats...

To begin with, the EN edition uses the colorimetric space 16-235 (attributed to video) and not the 0-255 (spectrum for computing) on the first two parts. Blacks are no longer washed out if you go out in YCbCr instead of the extended RGB.

Then, even if the differences remain measured, Dolby Vision encoding proposed by the French publisher M6 Video displays slightly deeper colours, more flourishing specular reflections, better management of the finest details in the shadows (better defined to keep you from hiding anything) and a more careful compression on Opus No.1 and No.3 (the colour banding no longer manages to cross the fence of the city).

SON – A fear that awakens

Divergent

Invigorating dynamics, clear voices, precise spatialization, surrounds that invite at regular intervals ballistic effects and/or industrial atmospheres, striking aerial scene (the appearance of the logos of the various production companies, the hallucination scene of the « mirror », the movement of trains, the attack of crows, the pressure of water, etc.), well ventilated music and striking bass, are the ingredients of this mixing DTS:X at any point higher than its counterpart not 3D.

Even if there is no need to increase the volume to enjoy it (unlike the previous Blu-ray), the VF lacks a bit of dynamism and natural atmospheres on the back.

Divergent 2: Insurrection

Much more powerful and alive than the French soundtrack (which lacks creativity and precision), this Atmos track filled with ambiences and multiple sound effects (the pyrotechnic sounds are unleashed regularly) is an acoustic killing.

From the excellent spatialisation to the extreme width of the dynamic range, to the continuous stress of the surrounds, the regular activation of the aerial scene (birds, shots, glass debris, a burning compartment, etc.) and the overwhelming grip of the bass (well dosed elsewhere), fans of the « Big sounds » will be largely satisfied.

Divergent 3: Beyond the Wall

An ultra-immersive and mercilessly dynamic Atmos mix where the voices are not confined to the only front stage, where the atmospheres are diffused at 360°, where the effects fumes on all sides and where the (infra-)basses are of deep firmness. And as it is populated by various « flying objects » who regularly tease our heroes, the air scene does not hesitate to make good use of it (in addition to spreading rain, dropping debris, opening/closing doors and raising music in electro mode). Tron-esque).

While it exploits all the possibilities of the DTS-HD MA 7.1 format and ensures XXL immersion, the VF lacks harmony between action (explosive) and dubbing (too timid in comparison).

CONCLUSION – A unique heroine

In his struggle for genuine emancipation and promised to an exceptional destiny in the shadow of utopia, Tris can count on the unwavering support of these 4K Ultra HD whose A/V benefits really do not demerit. Undoubtedly, all factions will be convinced!

Divergent - The Trilogy

Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
