The festival's flagship event and not least, the Annecy festival could boast of welcoming the three new directors of Spiderman Across The Spiderverse : Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin Thompson. This new anime is the continuation of a saga announced after the excellent first installment that surprised everyone in 2018 with its freshness, humour and high-flying animation. The writers and producers of the first Phil Lord and Chris Miller remain at the helm. We share our first overview of this brief but carefully orchestrated presentation since Annecy.
A casting that gives you vertigo
As an aperitif, the session started with the teaser already broadcast this winter in order to heat the room better, then the team moved on to serious things. Presentation of new unreleased extracts in world preview, new spider-hero and as a good superhero movie also depends on his great villain, it was also the opportunity to discover the one who will put sticks in the wheels of Miles Morales. It was under a thunder of applause (and a few cries of prepuberous groupies) that we could measure the hype that was built around Miles Morales in recent years with the film, comics and the dedicated video game Insomniac Games. Between Across the Spider-Verse and its future future Beyond the Spider-Verse, the directors promised no less than 240 characters to discover, something to give vertigo. A promise that questions the construction of the narrative to combine so many characters at the same time.
If the ending credits of the first episode Into the Spiderverse More than one had left his mouth bet, it is today that it is probably realized that he acted as a prelude to what awaits us in 2023. The animation seems to be raised a step higher and the few still in preproduction that have been chained in the short excerpts that were shown to us left dreamers. If some were still at an early stage of development, we could already realize how different dimensions each will have their unique graphic style. Gwen's (whose new haircut moved my young neighbors from the seat) was a mixture of pastel colours with watercolours. The film team wanted the emotions to appear on the scene with a new volumetric effect that spreads dynamically.
One of the axes of this colorful charismatic character was also seen, notably on his relationship with his father George – another variation of the integrity cop – who suspects her in another dimension of killing Spiderman. We learn in passing that George will be doubled by the actor Shea Whigham. Since the brothel initiated by Miles Morales's frascs, Spidercochon and his peers have escaped and travel between different dimensions to spread the mess.
Vinci code
The first extract presented us with a naughty straight out of the sketches of Leonardo De Vinci, a kind of mechanical vulture in a squeaky style and in the shades of Armenian paper. A confrontation that immediately specifies the studio's intention to mix genres without concessions. In the middle of the battle, two other spider heroes enter the dance: the Spiderman 2099 badass The first episode and a black and pregnant Spiderwoman riding a motorcycle. We already feel that she will act as mentor for Gwen, like Spiderman 2099 for Miles. It was also an opportunity to see how the new animation tools enabled the artist's graphic style to be best transcribed, in particular that of Brian Stelfreeze for the Spiderman 2099 model.
This avatar 2099 could count on a particularly devastating arsenal: Wingsuit, laser canvases, gadgets, nanotechnologies to make Bruce Wayne and Tony Stark pale together. Spiderman 2099 also enjoys a power that gave him the sweet sobricated of « Property Damage Spiderman » to the development team. Spiderman 2099 moves like a panther that would have freed itself from gravity. At each impact, the walls collapsed under his claws and acidic fangs appeared instantly on the hero's face.

As for the third and final excerpt, he gave us a glimpse of a family scene where Miles Morales, his father and his mother were summoned to the director of the college in Miles, the occasion of an exchange always as well doubled and to guarantee a well-sounded humour. This sequence started under the song Guess Whos Back by Rakim, in the continuation of the excellent OST of the first part which left the beautiful part to rap and hip hop tubes. Miles is now fifteen and an athletic look. Barely arrived (and already late) that his sharp senses were about the presence of a super naughty. « He is lying and I think you know it » before the sequence ends on the logo of the film.
The Spot
It was a very successful transition for the team that then announced the new threat that Miles and his companions will face: The Spot, unknown to the battalion for many of us but chosen by the team for his atypical abilities. This character (on the cover of this paper) should evolve throughout the film as he takes his powers.
It can create portals with ink and threatens to precipitate all dimensions into an abyss. The public was able to appreciate a first animated sketch of The Spot, in a vibrant style scratched. It'll be this time Jason Schwartzman who lends his voice to the character. We are not fooled, this presentation was also an opportunity to demonstrate the performance of the new development tools. Sony Pictures Animation, which should be used for other future productions. This first glimpse, brief but intense, gives a promising new cuvée for June 2, 2023. We really feel that the team took one more blot for this episode, of which we hope to propose a successful marriage between the comics and cinema.
