WORK – The Queen of the damned
Selene will not only repel the attacks of the lycans and vampires, who, after having waged a long war, ally against her. It will do everything possible to put an end to this eternal war, even if it does not commit the ultimate sacrifice.
Despite some approximate CGIs (the transformation of the leader of the lycans) and minor characters with little development (Marius is transparent and Semira is too overly overwhelmed while she had all the assets to be the great success of this fifth part), this fantastic B-series with marked comic book style is well rhythmic and rich in bloody action in addition to bringing novelty to mythology Underworld (the « Sacred World »).
IMAGE – White as snow?
A cold and dark photograph (in line with previous ones even if more icy than blue) perfectly reproduced by this ultra-contrast 4K master, whose idyllic precision and surgical pique (details are clearer than in HD) impress. Nevertheless, the presence in places of color banding betrays a somewhat light compression.
The shades are more saturated (blue eyes, orange flames) and more nuanced (red blood), the skin of vampires is paler, the blacks get deeper and the whites in purity (Var Dohr Nordic Assembly), the neon lights better and the reflections on the outfits/cars are brighter. However, even though denser than in CSD (where they were milky), some dark scenes lose in detail (climbing to the northern fortress) when others turn out too well (American nights).
SON – Fire and blood!
Powerful and well-spaced sound tracks that fill with effects/ambiences (the whistling of bullets, screaming, polar wind) on all channels without ever crushing the voices (a constant clarity). The score is not lacking in magnitude and the basses mischievously shake the walls (especially during explosions and blows carried).
More impacting than the very good VF and equipped with efficient verticality (resonance in some places, safety alarm, thundering), the VO Dolby Atmos ensures a more immersive acoustic spectacle.
CONCLUSION – The last bleeding
So who sees the elegant gothic still-living fuck on the face of a rough pack of werewolves with hair (once again) in the presence of the old « Servant of Death » Kate Beckinsale, this final act (at least for the moment) shows the hooks in 4K Ultra HD despite less careful visuals than expected !
