WORK – No, but say, is it good or not?
Zhuo Yi-Hang is a student of Wu Tang Martial Arts School. He's as good as dissipated. His master would like him to take responsibility within the clan because the Manchu troops threatened the borders of the Empire. Link, a young orphan woman who grew up among wolves, is at the service of Ji Wushuang, terrible Siamese twins, and worshipers of the evil Supreme Cult who swore the loss of Wu Tang. While everything is against them, Link and Zhuo Yi-Hang will fall in love...
Wu xia pian fantasy emblematic of the 90s having acquired its status as a cult movie with the years, The Bride with White Hair tale a beautiful story of love with exaggerated feelings (a variation around Romeo and Juliet) coupled with a chivalry narrative with memorable action scenes (not subject to the laws of gravity). Freeing narrative and dramatic rules for better « Invent » his staging, the director invites us to a bold mystical visual ballet to the technical and artistic outfit strictly fantastic, where the graphic violence of the confrontations (well choreographed) and the physical passion of romance (carried by the fever of his actors) coordinate on a frantic rhythm before getting married during a final outcome certainly tearing.
IMAGE – Everyone's beautiful, are you sure?
Taken from the same 4K restoration as the French Blu-ray released in 2020, the image remains no less different in each place despite the absence of HDR.
If the softness of the pique and the filtered lights are part of the charm generated by the magical majesty of the photograph signed Peter Pau (future oscarized for Tiger and Dragon), increased ardour of colours, the more exalted fervour of contrasts (it is also darker) and the slightly more pronounced brightness of the different lights mark points on its HD counterpart.
Also enjoying a stronger compression, its light « Beguin » for the parsimonious use of DNR (the grain was smoothed while it was of a beautiful finesse on the hexagonal disk) can unfortunately make it lose (not always) some details of this one.
However, this bold mystical visual ballet stopped providing pure wonder.
SON – He who has ears to hear, hear!
Dated (see the sounds) without demeriting, the VO, which is neither lacking in scope (good engagement of the frontal scene) nor in clarity, leaves some atmospheres, effects (the whip) and/or instruments of the score (great and unforgettable) behind. But as on the FR edition, the right surround speaker delivers more sounds than the left (excluding voice echoes, deleted in this place), so that the back is unbalanced.
More frontal, soundtrack 2.0 is a priority for its overall harmony.
CONCLUSION – Every good thing has an end...
If this is already done, this fiery masterpiece will come to you « consume » Ultra HD Blu-ray support!
Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
