WORK - An impossible love

Wu xia pian fantasy emblematic of the 90s having acquired its status as a cult movie with the years, The Bride with White Hair of the Ronny Yu tale a beautiful story of love with exacerbated feelings (a variation around Romeo and Juliet) coupled with a chivalry narrative with memorable action scenes (not subject to the laws of gravity).

Operator of the same 4K restoration as the French Blu-ray released in 2020 and the German 4K Ultra HD (SDR) of 2021, this UHD Dolby Vision transfer by Etienne Prod (also behind compression with Comonscreen) and calibrated by Lumiris and Addict Films, summons the colorimetric flamboyance (validated by the director) of the UK Blu-ray from Eureka Entertainment while beautifying during scenes strongly illuminated or immersed in darkness...
If the sweetness of the pique (even if the details gain in precision) and the filtered lights are part of the charm generated by the magical majesty of the photograph signed Peter Pau (future oscarized Tiger and Dragon), the true increase in the intensity of the colours (primarys are inflamed and no tint is softened during extreme counter-days), the much more exalted fervour of contrasts (from darker to denser blacks and more celestial whites) and the much more pronounced brightness of diffuse light sources (the moonlight) and/or direct (reflections on the blades), make all the difference with respect to previous editions.
Benefiting from a titanium compression (with a bitrate regularly exceeding 100 Mbit/s) and not allowing to go to « Beguin » German disc for the parsimonious use of DNR, silver emulsion, even if fluctuating by nature (more apparent for example during accelerated retarded detonators), displays with a remarkable finesse (even when smoke covers the place).
In short, this excellent presentation to exemplary stability merges the qualities of the 4K Ultra HD Plaion Pictures with the colouring intensity of the British Blu-ray. And it's not the few remaining dirt (one or two spots around here, a scratch over there) that can ruin this pure wonder at all times.
SON - Trust reigns?
Even if they do not demerit (when the volume is increased), the soundtracks from the original Dolby Surround mix are dated (see the sounds). However, stereophonic proposals are better than the multichannel proposal.
More open and allowing to drag some atmospheres, effects (like whiplashes) and/or instruments from the score behind, the Cantonese VO 5.1 and its dialogues can be stifled still shows a good commitment thanks to a dynamic front stage and a music (grandiose and unforgettable) signed Richard Yuen a great fidelity. However, as the right side surround enclosure delivers a little more sounds than the left (a clumsy distribution of the original mix?), the rear scene is unbalanced. In addition, a small desynchronization occurs for a few minutes in the middle of the program.
More frontal but enjoying a more pronounced acoustic clarity (which is noticeable on the voices), the Cantonese 2.0 soundtrack is a priority for its overall harmony. Stereophonic VF, in spite of just acceptable dubbing, is neither large nor balanced.
