WORK – The Dark Side of Gotham
In his second year of fighting crime, the masked billionaire and vigilante Batman explores the corruption in Gotham, including how she could be linked to her own family, the Waynes, to whom he owes all his wealth. In parallel, he investigates the murders of a serial killer who makes himself known as Riddler and sows cruel puzzles in his passage.
In this anti-spectacular blockbuster that gives back « colours » to the (very) black Knight, the Avenger Bat and the neurotic Wayne venture on the side of the peaty thriller with strong fincherian consonance. (read our review Here).
Initiating a lasting malaise, this initiatory investigation which has nothing superheroic leads us, in fact, to the bottoms of a rainy Gotham gangred by corruption and violence where the staging is classy, the ubiquitous suspense, characters full of characters (between cult comics) Long Halloween and narrative arch Silence) and high-fly casting.
Definitely captivating and definitely grunge, this renaissance that imposes its slow step is darker than ever!
IMAGE – The night belongs to him
Captured in 4.5K and 6K before being scanned in 4K for the DI, the experimental image (from the digital to the vintage aspect) that is owed to the Op-Chief Greig Fraser (Rogue One, Dune) is perfectly returned (up to its « imperfections » by this UHD Dolby Vision transfer that raises the visual experience of its HD counterpart.
The compression does not show any weakness, the silver grain gains stability, the definition makes a flawless (the blurred areas are due to the use of anamorphic lenses) and the details to the sweetness all in all voluntary (do not expect a contemporary sharpness) appear with a little more clarity (the faces, costumes of the « Caped Crusader » and Catwoman, the streets of the Corrupt City).
Almost permanent obscurity obliges (whites are rare), the contribution of WCG and HDR technologies is to be sought from the point of view of accuracy and not of demonstration since the colours are generally desaturated (greyish shades bloom) and the luminous peaks contained. The colorimetric palette is therefore barely warmer even though it is true that the red/orange tones express themselves more generously, the contrasts are more demanding with blacks (not necessarily abyssaux) less crushed than in CSD and the light sources, never extraneous and better crapped (as soon as there are flames), develop a small additional radiation (sunrises and sunsets, urban lighting, vehicle headlights).
SOUND – Vengeance
Both for VO fans and VF fans, this Dolby Atmos soundtrack with exemplary distribution and relevant power is a long funeral walk to darkness...
Supported by deep basses which, remarkably used (the techno music of the Iceberg Lounge, the blows carried, the turbine of the Batmobile, the carambolage), cover the acoustic space of a particularly oppressive atmosphere, it lets itself go to a feverish dynamic (the race-continuation), uses to profusion of its effects and/or atmospheres, at the back as well as in the heights (the Bat-Grappin, the rain, the wingsuit flight), and moves at the rhythm of a rolling score signed Michael Giacchino.
CONCLUSION – Get off the masks.
Against the background of a track game, the tortured detective reconnects with his origins in the face of his first real investigation... Whose enigmas and cryptic clues beam is easier to decipher in 4K Ultra HD!
