WORK - The hedgehog, fox and echidne
Well settled in the small town of Green Hills, Sonic now wants to prove that he's a real hero. A major challenge comes to him when Dr. Robotnik, accompanied by his new accomplice Knuckles, reappears.
Sacrificing the emotion of original buddy movie on the altar of the auction (all sliders have been pushed to the maximum), this more openly Hollywood suite that runs after the Marvel formula and confronts his mythology (Tails, Knuckles, the Emeralds of Chaos) more closely to a young audience (the replicas are only jokes). More action, more fun and more characters for a Happy Meal concocted at the speed (narrative wanderings, big fan-service spread and unconvincing SFX), where Jim Carrey cabotine in a cartoon one-eggman-show. Of course fun and deceiving, this entertainment lacks cruelly stinging.
IMAGE - Dad grew the mustache
From a digital capture in 4.5 and 6K, the 4K image was completed in a more impressive UHD Dolby Vision transfer than CGIs with coarse textures (which could sparkle) that gave Sonic and his friends life.
The definition never weakens, the piqué becomes more refined (the facial features, the texture of the furs, the weaving of clothes), the plans are immaculate and no compression artifact is perceptible (despite an average bitrate of 45 Mb/s).
The colorimetric palette with wonderfully saturated hues is even more vibrant (the coat of the shock trio) and the contrast ratio increases seriously, consolidating the depth of the blacks, the purity of the whites (the snow) and the impact of the light sources (an average brightness of almost 300 cd/m2 with peaks rising above 530 nits) such as the energetic powers of our heroes or the feeding of Dr Robotnik's machines.
SON - Boing, whoosh, clink... 💥
Powerful but not too much (dynamics certainly had more to offer), the VO Dolby Atmos delivers clear dialogues, an engaging score, effects/ambiences well distributed across all channels, a sympathetic verticality (cf. pursuit on the mountain and confrontation against the giant robot) and an LFE channel to the certain contribution.
Below the precision side, the VF Dolby Digital 5.1 still remains fairly large and decemably spatialized at its height. As for dubbing (Malik Bentalha is again Sonic's voice), it integrates well into the original mixing.
