WORK - Victim of his demons

Jack Torrance, guardian of a closed hotel in winter, his wife and son Danny are about to live long months of loneliness. Danny, who owns a psychic gift, the «Shining», is afraid to live in this place, a theatre marked by terrible events...

If it plunges us into absolute terror, this classic from horror to brilliant construction, sophisticated staging and heavy atmosphere, was made unforgettable by the frightening performance of a Jack Nicholson inhabited by dementia. A work as fascinating as it is striking, even so far from the essence of the novel of Stephen King.

IMAGE - In the den of madness

Under close supervision of Leon Vitali (Stanley Kubrick's long-time personal assistant) and Steven Spielberg, this integral restoration obtained from a new 4K scan of the original 35 mm negatives, considerably improves the images of the previous Blu-ray (dated 2007). The signed photo John Alcott This magnified...

The planes are more stable (from the aerial opening sequence) and immaculate, the silver texture is more organic, the textures are much finer (the hotel corridors, the snow down) and the overall brightness that has been revised downwards (it is darker here while there are more details in the shadows) is better suited to the atmosphere.

The colours are more subtle (the cyan thrust is no longer) and attractive (the red toilet, Wendy's blue sweater), the contrasts are more sought-after (see the density of the blacks) and the light sources that are brighter (the light of day that passes through the glazing, the lighting of the bar) are also much better dressed (as in Dick Halloran's apartment in Miami where the lamp bulb is now visible).

Shining (1980)

Wendy, I'm Home!

Of course, the star of these soundtracks (olding) remains the strident and disturbing music composed by Wendy Carlos. Regularly invading the acoustic space, it is she who benefits most from spatialisation (except for rare surround effects).

Rather frontal, therefore, and poorly worn on the bass (even less on the VF where the « heartbeat » This soundtrack remains clear enough (despite a little breath) and dynamic to enjoy this lively stay at the Overlook hotel.

Again and it's a pity, the original blend presented in mono is absent.

CONCLUSION - Puzzle and maze

While Kubrick invites the spectator to a labyrinthic journey whose own is to lose the one who s'y adventure, the present 4k Ultra HD (with the exceptional 2160p transfer) accentuates the disorientation caused by this game of psychological track whose outcome remains (again and always) unpredictable despite its more than 40 years of age!

Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
