WORK – Sea games, spectrums in view
One night, alone at home, two high school girls get scared telling a bad joke. A strange rumor is circulating about a videotape that, once viewed, triggers a terrible curse: a death announced seven days later. After the death of his cousin Tomoko Oishi, Reiko Asakawa, a young journalist, investigates it, but very quickly he catches it...
Directed by Hideo Nakata, this inescapable of J-Horrror adapted from the novel of the same name is a nightmare tale about urban legends (and the superstitions that result from them) to the super-yearly charm that relies on suggestion and psychology (not graphic violence) to create a heavy atmosphere. The scenario is intriguing, the actors involved (Nanako Matsushima, Hiroyuki Sanada) and minimalist staging in appearance. A terror to see!
IMAGE – TV kills!
Resulting from a 4K scan of the original negative 35 mm whose calibration was supervised and approved by the chief op Jun的ichirō Hayashi, this UHD Dolby Vision transfer respectful of the photography of the work allows to rediscover the best known video of all.
The master is very clean, the excellent definition (the slight lack of pique at times is due to the source), the improvement of more than significant details (faces, hair, clothes, decors), the nicely refined silver grain (excluding false VHS images deliberately granular) and the irreproachable compression.
The cold colorimetric palette with natural (and deliberately extinct) hues is gaining in depth, the very well nuanced contrasts reveal more controlled blacks (cf. details in the darkest corners of the frame) and whites with measured brightness, and light sources not demonstrative by nature are associated with a new shine (inner lighting, manual inspection lamp in the water well).

Remastered from the original audio files, the Japanese soundtrack proposed in DTS-HD MA 6.1 where each channel is animated with as much sophistication as discretion, uses an opportune dynamic during the anxious passages and a scary score signed Kenji Kawai. The dialogues are clear and the surround effects, even if not very exploited, very skillful (such as the reverbs and sounds emanating from the TVs).
Ample and enveloping, the VF DTS-HD MA 5.1 unfortunately suffered from overtones.

At the origin of the mythical saga, worship Ring (of his real name) Sadako come out of the shadow with a 4K Ultra HD edition (a digipack collector) with technical hair performances!
