Jack Sparrow and his companions are searching for Poseidon's Trident, on which Captain Teague holds valuable information. This legendary artifact, which gives all power over the oceans, is their only way to escape the ghosts of the fearsome Captain Salazar, escaped from the Bermuda Triangle to eliminate all pirates from the oceans...
Between plentiful adventures, homicidal action scenes (the final) sometimes Cartoonesque, farfetched situations, splendid exotic places, a constant second degree, the encounter of new characters (and the return of old), actors who cabotine like little fools, a fantastic delusional bestiary and spectacular SFX (attack of zombie sharks), this fifth opus of the franchise Caribbean Pirates continues to have the wind in stern even if the freshness of the beginnings has gone off!
IMAGE - 20,000 leagues on the seas
Inundated with palpable textures and ultra-defined details, this UHD transfer is even more robust than its HD colleague (a clear gain in clarity and resolution) releases optimal brightness (even if the image is a little darker than on the Blu-ray), an incredible depth of field, pimping colors and sharp contrasts.
The saturation of colours is improved (more nuanced browns, richer gilding, darker greens, deeper oranges, warmer tones of flesh and more intense blue skies) and leaves the green shades of photography fully to exist, whites are more awake (clouds), moon reflections are much brighter on metal/wet parts of ships, lights are more flamboyant (sunset/rises) and the graduation of blacks is better differentiated. But what a pity that the opening scene is poining a little color banding in the depths of the ocean.
SOUND - The dead don't tell stories
A finely designed and immersive mix with firm dialogues, with effects/ambiences perfectly placed in all the (re)ins of the listening area (the chaos in the streets of Saint-Martin), with music of Geoff Zanelli adventurous and penetrating bass.
Dolby Atmos obliges, the VO manipulates the upper layer with subtlety in order to support the narration (movement of the sails, crackling of the wood, the cry of the seagulls) and support the action (the collapse of the bank, the echoes of the cannons, the brightness of the hulls). But while the VF is dynamic as it should, the VO is not punchy enough!
CONCLUSION - The end of the journey?
Somewhat drifting after a fourth episode who took the water, the great saga to the pirates comes back with a regressive blockbuster succeeding in finding intermittently the adventure of the Dantan. And for those who would like to embark alongside the unforgettable Jack Sparrow, know that his Black Pearl is no longer a wreck but indeed a robust ship (the A/V features of this 4K Ultra HD are ENFIN at the height of the support capabilities) ready to sail!
Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
