WORK - The forces of hunger

In the near future, survivors barricaded in a bunker city still live in the memory of the old world. Zombies are organizing themselves to take on this city, which is known as untapped. Kaufman, self-proclaimed leader of the city, hires a commando of mercenaries to counter the attacks of these living dead of a new kind...

In this fourth opus of the Saga zombies, horrific western of dreadful efficiency in the atmosphere of « end of the world » gloomy and harmful, George A. Romero continues his reflection on America (parabolic about the eternal reign of power and money), stigmatizes terrorism (after 11 September) and puts on a level of still-living equality (migrants) and human beings (residents) to shake our prejudices. An implacable B-series that has biting!

« In a world where the dead return to life, the word «problem» loses a lot of meaning. »

IMAGE - The buffet is open

Resulting from a 4K restoration of the original negative Fujifilm 35 mm, this UHD Dolby Vision transfer (which concerns only the Directors Cut) to the solid compression (an average bitrate of 85 Mbps) proves to be a healthy upgrade of the cockroach photography of the chef op Miroslaw Baszak.

The pleasantly reproduced silver texture reveals itself with more finesse, the pique even though quite soft by nature displays more revealing details (trenched flesh and exposed bowels will have no more secrets for you) and the revised resolution on the rise brings a touch of realism to the textures (the wear of vehicles)... Less to CGI, necessarily more visible than in the past. It should be noted that without apparent logic, the framing of many planes differs slightly from that of the previous DI 2K.

Bathed in blue and brown, the colorimetric palette with a slightly warmer calibration makes its primary springs (red blood and burning flames are brighter) at the same time as it shades all its hues (especially earthy) with a saturation worthy of praise.

Even in the deepest darkness, constantly rich in information, the better controlled contrasts deliver blacks to the superb density and whites to the formidable purity. On the night background, the more natural twilight light and other brighter light sources (heavenly flowers, headlights, artificial lighting of the tower, reflections in the water) detach themselves more.

SON - It's the final struggle 🎶

Enveloping atmospheric atmospheres, palpable horror, pyrotechnics of certain magnitude, circular motorized sounds, note of percussive music and grumbling bass, have always dressed the acoustics of this zombie revolution...

Restricted until then to a 5.1 mixing, encoded here in DTS-HD MA (24-bit, 4180 kbps). Its downmix 2.0 (untested), also available in DTS-HD MA (24-bit, 2066 kbps), has been added to this edition to make a good figure. But now an unexpected remix Dolby Atmos (24-bit, 3689 kbps) has been invited to join the damned of the Earth...

Equipped with an increased sound field and a much more aggressive dynamic, it takes advantage of a better distribution of noises (the shots, the rales of the living dead) to fill the listening room more fully, a vertical part of which is obviously understood (the fireworks, a zombie crawling on the roof of the Dead Reckoning). The dialogues were slightly enhanced, the partition of Reinhold Heil and Johnny Klimek The LFE channel is given material in low frequencies (vehicles' thermal engines, explosions).

CONCLUSION - Standing the damned

In this anti-capitalist charge where the mentalist Simon Baker is surrounded by living dead taking up arms, society (the metaphorical twin of the West) more than ever sick is at the dawn of its own death while its protections, illusory since provided by the only « power » political and financial, fall behind each other.

Lucide and more than ever news, this zombie flick faithful to the recipe reinvented by his father in 1968 is also, to chew on 4K Ultra HD support (A/V nightmarish services)!

Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia

I recently watched his first three films of the Trilogy of the Dead And this one's next on my list. I had seen them about 20 years ago.

I especially loved Day of the Dead and the remake of Night of the Living Dead 1990 by Tom Savini.

Do you have a favorite?
