WORK – The hour of glory of the living dead
Blood-thirsty dead people invaded the Earth and fed on its inhabitants. A group of survivors take refuge in an abandoned commercial centre. While life is organized inside, the situation worsens outside.
Masterpiece of a saga in six chapters started in 1968 and closed in 2009, Zombie is a great classic of the modern horror cinema that simmers into a pamphlet on our consumer society.
IMAGE – The horror shopping center
The results of a new master's degree restored in 4K (from the 35mm interpositive) under the control of the op-head Michael Gornick, the images of this European montage (supervised by Dario Argento with the BO of Goblin) presented in CSD are simply superb... But vintage source obliges (which is more low budget), it will be necessary to make with some plans in withdrawal (softness and optical blur).
In view of previous publications, this UHD transfer is finally rid of the slightest trace of dirt, exposes new details from everywhere (Tom Savini's make-up, furniture in residential areas, sewing of clothes, supermarket shelves), displays solid colors of a beautiful vitality and delivers scenes in low light much more legible (blacks are of great beauty).
And compared to the new Blu-ray, the best compression of the 4K Ultra HD allows to slightly increase the definition, gain stability and display the original granulation more healthyly (no tingling). One « rediscovered » Major!
SON – Argh! Aarrgghhh! Aaarrrggghhhhhh!
There are three options with the original English, French and Italian versions.
If the VO is more dynamic and profound than the others, with a spatialization that fits the spirit of the film (not free of charge), it unfortunately suffers from voices with metallic sound. A little more frontal while maintaining a certain spatial presence, the VF is unfortunately blunted by much too much-emphasized dialogues that crush noise. More open and balanced than the VF (a better distinction of background ambiences) with even appreciable slight basses, it is finally the VI (and its well integrated voices) which, despite small petals, allows to appreciate at best the apocalypse according to George A. Romero (the note is therefore the reflection of this soundtrack).
And while it is available on the Blu-ray (not included in this edition 4K Ultra HD), the original mono 2.0 mix is shamefully absent here. It is a pity because when listening (ready for the Cult-Edition box), it is clearly in this version that the reproduction of the dialogues is the most conclusive.
CONCLUSION – Ready to shop?
When there is no more room in hell, the dead return to earth... And if they had lost appetite with age, they regained the desire to devour everything in front of this appetizing 4K Ultra HD!
Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
