WORK – Mathayus the Barbare

5,000 years before Jesus Christ, the legendary city of Gomorrah is under the control of the greedy Memnon, an evil tyrant determined to eliminate the nomadic peoples of the desert. Menaced by extinction, they forget their centuries-old quarrels and together prepare a response. Knowing that their adversary is inspired by the visions and prophecies of a sorcerer, they hire a murderer, Mathayus, to kill him.

From popcorn adventures to the old (the Manufacturer 2000s?) to the familial scenario but to the places visited very displaceable, where the muscles of Dwayne Johnson, the curves of Kelly Hu, the variety of action scenes (well packed that is more) and the small notes of humor, make a pleasant time. An honest entertainment quickly seen, quickly forgotten.

IMAGE – Muscles (well oiled) and hair (well-dressed)

An impressive upgrade that makes the Blu-ray a terrible bland 10 years ago... even though the colors here are much less red than before (the characters no longer suffer from a sunburn). More balanced, they reduce hot drifts and greatly expand other shades (especially earthy) such as sky blue and vegetation green.

More luminous, this 4K Ultra HD encoded in HDR10 delivers otherwise more dynamic day scenes (the sun is brighter) and stronger night sequences (see the balance of blacks) where candles and other torches shine with a thousand fires.

More sharp, the images display with amazing visibility. The details on faces, armors and rocky relief appear more clearly, especially since a cleaning work has visibly been carried out (black spots are a distant memory) and that the improvement of compression avoids the macroblocks (at the darkest passages) of HD transfer. But of course, the sweetness inherent in the source persists.

SON – Be careful, the storm is coming...

Amplified to whom better and particularly pleasant, this mixing that diffuses effects/ambiences in all directions remains no less harmonious and diffuses voices of good clarity, a score (by John Debney) intense anachronistic rock and copious bass. But to really enjoy all this fuzz, it's the VO DTS:X that you have to select.

With a greater spatial width and a whole other dimension, it makes it more particularly fun for many sounds. « discarded » by high enclosures (explosions, the fall of a chandelier, debris, local fauna, arrows, the tumult of the streets of Gomorrah, men projected there and there, etc.). A pleasure all the time.

CONCLUSION – A legendary warrior?

Through the dry expanses of an even more touristic desert in Ultra HD Blu-ray, our Herculean hero will brave all the dangers to save the kingdom between four gallopades and three sword fights!

Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
