WORK - To Our Loves
At 15, Adele doesn't ask questions: a girl is dating boys. Her life turns on the day she meets Emma, a young woman with blue hair, who makes her discover desire and allows her to assert herself as a woman and adult. Facing the eyes of others, Adèle grew, sought, lost, found...
Beyond the polemics that accompanied and shook the release of the film (Political Palm, filming conditions, denunciations of actresses, explicit sex scenes), The life of Adele dAbdellatif Kechiche (at the top of his art) is an upsetting love story carried by the poignant Adele Exarchopoulos (aside from Léa Seydoux But she manages to overshadow the authenticity of situations, struck by the subtlety of the themes she dealt with (adolescence, marginality, social violence, cultural liberalism, love relations) and embrased the heart (Chapter 1) before grinding it (Chapter 2). Despicable!
« We're born in the world. We exist and then we define ourselves by his actions. It gives us a great responsibility. »
Emma
IMAGE - Face shock
From a digital "low cost" capture using the Canon EOS C300 (and its Super 35 mm sensor) in full HD 1920×1080 pixels in MPEG-2 Long GOP format in 4:2:2, this scaling (by IA) with Dolby Vision calibration (and HDR10+) improves, but not without defect, the unhidden tenderness and sensuality of a photograph (signed by Sofian El Fani) to the unarming natural, where the human soul reveals like rarely*.
The master is immaculate, the postrization in the dark is more than a bad memory (HEVC encoding is solid) and the level of definition is excellent. Despite the sometimes visible use of an AI (although applied with More taste than James Cameron) to upscale the (limited) original resolution, details gain significantly in precision (face characteristics, epidermis, textile fibres)...
However, the simultaneous accentuation of all the elements of the framework, without distinction of priority sometimes (especially in large plans), as well as the ill-advised attempt to develop indistinguishable information from the source (cf. the scriptures on the bag Cars in the 4th screenshot below), betray his presence. Fortunately, these cases remain sufficiently rare.
* An extraordinary virtuosity to film the faces (impressionist suns), bodies and skins (most often in very close-up) with a prodigious science of the frame and light that, like a painting or sculpture, captures a portrait (here of a young girl struggling with her feelings) with penciled forms and mouths, where emotions (intense but volatile in the way of love) touch into the smallest details of the trait.

The very beautiful colorimetric palette that benefits from increased heat (a carnation full of life) adjusts the saturation of its primary (more nuanced blues, deeper reds and brighter yellows) and light sources, apart from some unfortunate crates (the windows in the background when kissing in the school stairs), illuminate the images as never before by flooding them with light and shine. As such, the scenes in the park are incredible (the reflections in the hair).
Despite reinforced contrasts, the absolute black level is not calibrated on 0 cd/m2 (black bars included). A problem that can be seen on OLED, certainly less (or even imperceptible) with LCD diffusers, which requires a small correction of the level of black. Without this, a slight detachment of darkness occurs (see the 2nd comparative slide above). Once this change is made, everything is in order.
It's time for love 🎶
Similar to the DTS-HD MA 5.1 proposal of the French Blu-ray, up to its low recording level (it will therefore be necessary to push the potard to + 10 dB above your reference level), this soundtrack is rather frontal (but not devoid of effects and/or atmospheres at the back during outdoor scenes) is of great delicacy.
Mixing, perfectly balanced, succeeds in naturally detaching the voices (of obvious clarity) so that the dialogues, of unsettling truthfulness, integrate harmoniously with the sound environment (including diegetical music), always subtle in its sounds.
CONCLUSION - Life in blue
While two women lovingly body and soul, art becomes a mirror of life where one loves, enjoys and suffers according to encounters. A cinematographic gem widely hailed by the critic, whose Cannois brilliance, a little diminished until then on physical supports (medium compression and brightness on the restraint), is found in 4K Ultra HD (a/V services engaged) despite a superfluous acne (the drifts of the AI). What does life take and what does it teach us?
Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
