WORK - The poorly haunted Manor

Dr. David Marrow brings Theo, Nell and Luke together in a very old labyrinth mansion known as haunted under the false pretext of curing them from their chronic insomnia. But the doctor wants to study the mechanisms of fear...

When the CGIs who spot fear replace it, they only remain a ghost train with terrifying platitude and laughable spectra where lost actors (Lili Taylor, Liam Neeson, Catherine Zeta-Jones) in an antiquary shop (an incredible decor very badly exploited) never manage to give substance to a ridiculously rocky intrigue. A very bad remake of Robert Wise's classic (The Devil's House) which, two years after Speed 2, will only confirm the mediocrity of the Jan de Bont director (was it really him behind Speed and Twister ?).

« You know, all my life, I have been waiting for an adventure. I think it would never happen to me. (...) Now, here I am. Paintings are moving and strange voices are calling for me at night (...). »

IMAGE - In Kane Palace

From the same restoration (a 4K scan of the original negative 35 mm and a new calibration supervised by Jan de Bont in person) as the Blu-ray appeared at Paramount in 2020, this UHD Dolby Vision transfer with solid encoding (an average bitrate of 85 Mbps) intensifies the macabre and threatening visuals designed by the chief operator Karl Walter Lindenlaub while highlighting the majestic decorations ofEugenio Zanetti.

The copy is as clean as it is stable, the wide frame benefits from a little more clarity (the background), the details gain in finesse (faces, textile fibres, woodwork, decorative elements) and the granular texture, much more palpable than in the past, displays with a rigorously transcribed silver density.

The reproduction of colours is improved by the WCG (the brown and red shades that cover the walls and floors, the blue aura during the fantomatic emergences) and the carnation, more natural, benefits from a small excess of heat.

Increased contrast values deliver deeper blacks and purer whites for better designed shadows, more visible shadows, better integrated digital VFXs and light sources (relatively soft with few exceptions) more realistic with more detailed high luminances (suspensions, headlights). MaxFALL was measured at 49 cd/m2 and MaxCLL at 1825 nits.

SON - Scooby-Dooby-Dooby-Doo, where are you? 🎶

Barred with effects (the massive doors that open and close, the murmurs over and over) and ambiances (the cracks of the building's wood, the creaking of the spiral staircase, the gusts of wind) widely dispersed in the acoustic space (wherein the interest of enabling a virtualization DSP in view of the numerous aerial stresses), the perfectly balanced mixing of the DTS-HD MA 5.1 track (24-bit, 4225 kbps) honors the fantastic sound design of the Gary Rydstrom (Jurassic Park, Top Gun: Maverick).

The devastating dynamic supports some effective impulses (spectral manifestations), the envelope offers an affluent directivity with an excellent distribution at the back, the dialogues remain clear throughout even when the spectacle tends towards the big sound, the overall atmospheric partition of Jerry Goldsmith (Basic Instinct, The Mummy 1999 is as faithfully reproduced as it is particularly voluminous and the basses, mesmerising repeatedly, require a strong LFE channel to express fully.

The edition also contains a down-mix 2.0 (24-bit, 2017 kbps) for those not equipped with a multichannel system. The DTS-ES 6.1 soundtrack of the DVD was not taken over.

CONCLUSION - Not even afraid!

Spectacular in toc, a casting next to the plate, fear never arrived at destination and a bank scenario, for just grotesque horror and without subtlety any that the present 4K Ultra HD, through performances A/V haunted by success, tries to make live in the best possible conditions. In these places where the bottom hanged, only the shape remains!

Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
