Since the 2016 reboot, any reference to Doom has been welcomed as the messiah for any fast FPS enthusiast who respects himself. The good old gringo that I am had not hesitated for a second to invest in the complete edition of Doom Eternal, which provided from the beginning two well muscled DLCs for the most seasoned. In the wake of the trailer broadcast and the antipodes of upstream communications, the game was immediately accessible. No time dead, isn't that the motto of the studio? Summary of the beast after turning the DLC in good form and putting my BFG in the closet.

Welcome to my nightmare

If doomslayer is well built, slit in its suit, harnessed with a back flame throw and an arsenal to make the NRA pale, this DLC intends to put your resistance to hard test. First thing to do, choose your way of difficulty. On this side, Doom is a model of the genre since it leaves the choice between six modes, the last two being reserved for the experienced masochists, since only one failure will lead you to the game over. To be reserved for madmen who are not afraid of stroke. For my part, I recommend the third degree of difficulty – ultra-violence – which offers a good degree of challenge and a well-balanced balance. Otherwise or after the first run, the nightmare mode remains decent but it is better to know the new monsters and arenas before rushing, otherwise saturate your frustration gauge.

Do me wrong! Johnny Johnny Johnny!

From a purely technical point of view, the game is always as successful. Perfectly optimized, The Ancient Gods turns like a 2K charm at 140 fps with a RTX 3080. Note that the developers have just announced the arrival of theray tracing. Only flat or recurring bug, my game session planted several times in the most muscular challenges when I launched a series of grenades on a boss immobilized at the secondary firing of the plasma cannon. A personal combination that I used a lot and that probably doesn't make my bike happy. Apart from this detail, RAS, the game is a treat on a 2K 144 hertz screen and the fluidity is preserved regardless of the number of enemies on screen. And enemies, you might as well say you're going to shovel it out or rather at the chainsaw.

Hurt me plenty

The Ancient Gods literally passes the first two opus for a tutorial. Several bosses are regularly mobilized at the same time among traditional enemies, sometimes invisible or under amphetamines. We push vice very far into the optional challenges Slayer Encounter. The principle is simple, eliminating all the demons of the arena with this time a second variant, even more arduous than the first, for those who wish to unlock unnecessary and therefore perfectly essential cosmetic assets. Who never dreamed of playing Conan the barbaric, Master Chief or even a unicorn ? For my part, I realized all these challenges until the end, the opportunity to discover how much I had taken in rank since the first time in 2016. And this is no doubt the heart of the success of these DLCs: to know how to take the player ever further, beyond his habits and until to generate the maximum potential damage in a given time. The Ancient Gods forces us out of our comfort zone and it's so much better!

Human after all

With his sequels, Doom has really become an additional gameplay with ever more strata that we add as pancakes in a cake already too loaded in chantilly. To this is added the excellent OST of Mike Gordon that plunges us into trance. The developers took a clever pleasure in combining enemy loops that were initially irreconcilable, not hesitant to mix opposite approaches. Doom's dialectic is summed up in a few words: the best defense is the attack!

Adrenaline

We force ourselves to change tactics, or rather we are forced to adapt and use absolutely all the specificities to overcome hordes that assail us. The scissors sheet stone consists of the permanent search for armor, ammunition and health through the combined use of the flame-thrower, the chainsaw and the glory kills Sees a fourth component reverse the deal: a hammer that puts all enemies in vamps in a joyful flood of bonuses. This new weapon will be a bit like your ultimate joker to take hold in the middle of a situation that is degenerating. Not being of a nature to use the BFG 9000 which I see as a crushed foot in the middle of a salsa, the hammer remains an additional element of gameplay to regain its breath. We will naturally load him with the enemy's weak points, which invites us to refine our shots.

I ain't got time to bleed

Never doomslayer had been so aggressive. The developers push us to eliminate two marauders possessed in barely a minute time on the counter. So many exploits that provide a feeling of singular satisfaction, reflecting memories of other episodes, as if we had finally managed to tame the game. At the bestiary level, rely also on the presence of new enemies in armor and resistance to certain weapons to force us to vary approaches, others can deprive us of our mobility for the time to eliminate them from a bloodpunch. Some are even vulnerable only for a few seconds and only at the head, a treat when two marauders stick to your calves. Totems and sorcerers who own and boost enemies are also part of the game. We surprise ourselves to always optimize situations to generate maximum damage in record time.

Prince of Darkness

Concerning the scenario – curious object for a fast FPS – the studio chose to close the axis engaged in 2016. If the first part of the DLC focuses rather on the ancient gods, the second raises the bar even higher question put to the stage. Special mention dragons and to the final battle which reaches the top of the auction. Doom Eternal The Ancient Gods offers a nice decomplexed program with a well-tuned rhythm. Pure gameplay with a hemoglobin debauchery that takes us into an infernal dance. where each reflection makes a difference. A moment of inattention and death is assured!

VERDICT

Doom Eternal The Ancient Gods is really the type of DLC we would like to see more often: not lazy, inspired and pushing the formula ever further. A gameplay with little onions, challenges every time renewed and a crazy OST make these DLC a frank success. The developers even dropped on the DA, which no longer hesitates to pick in the acidulated color palettes of the 1990s! Count eight hours of madness by DLC, eight hours that plunge us into the depths of hell in order to rouse the Lord of Darkness. After an original end, we are very curious to see what ID software can do best for the series. Can we still really surpass the gods when we have already dethroned them?
