The rebellion will begin!

In 2012, in a world where marginalized and disabled people are excluded, the members of the Mutant Action, a terrorist group whose leader, Ramón Yarritu, has just released from prison, plan to take Patricia Orujo, the daughter of a rich industrialist, away from prison during her marriage...

Made of bric and broc, the first feature film of Spanish provocative Álex de la Iglesia (Beast Day, Perdita Durango) is a children's room movie animated by a monstrous energy that delights with chaos and anarchy. For strangely subversive and totally out of date, this sci-fi that is dirty with devastating black humour is meant to be a satirical sandbox reserved for turbulent adults where we find rock-capped situations, completely barred characters, gore that works and hand-made craspec decorations. An addictive debility, this Siamese twin finished with kerosene of the bigarré duo Caro and Jeunet (Delicatessen, The City of Lost Children) is indeed the underground classic he thinks he is!

« The company treated us like shit, it's up to us now to fuck him up! »

IMAGE - The Monster Ball

From a 4K scan of the original 35 mm negative, this UHD Dolby Vision transfer under the charm of the crading photography of Carles Gusi is of all beauty despite slight damage (some dust and vertical stripes). On the horizon, point of DNR and/or strengthening contours, but a life-filled image firmly supported by a heavy HEVC compression.

The previously observable ratio concern on physical support has been corrected (faces are no longer elongated and frame 2.39 gets a surplus of information in its four corners), the silver texture is very pleasantly solved and the plans display much more details than in the past (injuries, costumes, ornamentations). As of course, the video credits are below, just like the TV passages... But this is voluntary!

The colorimetric palette sees the saturation of its shades increase (this is noticeable on reds, greens and blues) and contrasts benefit from a visible increase in the dynamic range with blacks at the increased depth and light sources openly enhanced (cf. artificial lighting in the spaceship of our group of broken arms).

- Freak is chic. 🎶

If Dolby Atmos mixing is present at Severin Films Unfortunately did not cross the Atlantic Ocean, our French release embarks the real Spanish track (in DTS-HD MA 5.1 and 2.0) with the music of Lalo Schifrin (the theme of Unable mission which sounds twice) missing from the US disc for rights issues.

Essentially frontal and very limited on rear activity (limited mainly to the diffusion of music), the multichannel VO releases without similiance or distortion of dialogues (good idiots) of great clarity, a rap metal score (signed by the Iberian group) Def Con Dos) to the excellent fidelity and effects/ambiences that keep throughout a good balance.

Otherwise more dynamic and ventilated in the sound space, the VF Surround 2.0, which makes much more generous use of the spatialisation of the mixing (some little directional but very much carried on the atmospheres), is provided with a drolatic dubbing led by a Richard Darbois in good shape. Once it is not customary, this is a French track that assures!

CONCLUSION - Down to normality!

Started with three Goyas in 1993 (best special effects, best makeup and best direction of production), this impertinent and furious freak show that goes far in its delirium is adorned with a superb digipack edition limited to 1000 copies with interesting strong bonuses (interviews of the director and of Pedro Almodóvar, make-of and video clip for a duration of around 90 min) and advantageous technical services. Join the fight!

Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
