In the middle of a vague land, stands a building inhabited by strange characters. All are clients of the butcher on the ground floor, whose stocks increase with the disappearance of some tenants, and all are confronted with the terrorism of vegetarian Troglodytes, living in the basements. A fine day comes, Louison, a nice boy who plays the music saw...
In this first feature film co-directed by the tandem Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet (The City of Lost Children), the poetic realism of Marcel Carné and imaginary DIY of Terry Gilliam (Army of the 12 monkeys) are found in a demolished building populated by truncated actors (including Dominique Pinon, Jean-Claude Dreyfus, Jean-François Perrier and Ticky Holgado) for a comedy in camera on the cruelty of men. As fierce as the society he laughs at, this piece of choice from the fantastic French is a triumph of ingenuity with a playful mind and a grinning black humour. Will you get a slice of it?

Produced by L Interview), this 4K restoration from the negative 35 mm beautifully reproduces the artistic wishes of the chief operator Darius Khondji, of which 35 mm of the epoch was manufactured with a specific photochemical treatment in order to obtain the unedited « French Gold » (as they said in the United States).
Bathed with a toxic yellow shine with patinated hues (imagine black and white in colors with golden and red highlights), the image of this UHD Dolby Vision transfer greatly improves the visual experience of the previous Blu-ray. With no damage to the source, it shows a noticeable increase in brightness (lights like reflections are incredibly intense), otherwise clearer details (the textures of clothing, faces and places), a healthier and striking colorimetric palette, and beautifully reinforced contrasts (for better legibility of dark scenes).
Still it is that the encoding (fluctuating between 20 and 70 Mbps!) sometimes gets lost in the thick outside fog (where some color banding escapes) and that the silver grain, mostly fine and organic, has been smoothed in places.
SOUND - Brick detector
Very rich and for the first time proposed in 5.1, the sound design « attached » Until today at its original stereo, this DTS-HD MA proposal has a tenfold dynamic and a new rear presence (the sequence of the metronome allows me to see the truthfulness of my words in less than two minutes).
Balanced with the utmost care and clarity of all moments, this soundtrack in total fit with its subject diffuses its atmospheres « deglazed » to the four corners of the listening room and its sweet fantasy composition (signed Carlos d'Alessio) with as much scope as ventilation. As for his delectable dialogues (adpts of the good word), they are exuded forcefully by the power station... but not that, since the whispered voices through the dilapidated pipes of the building emanate from all sides!
For owners of a 3D configuration, don't hesitate to activate your virtualization DSP (Dolby Surround or DTS Neural:X) for many effects lend it a lot (such as the spring of the mat which grins or water which flows violently from the pipes).
CONCLUSION - With the right franquette?
At the same time as the innocence of lovers is due to human savagery, this retro dystopia finds refuge in an Ultra HD 4K of Master Craftsmen (the A/V services have light on all floors) that will make the cinephiles happy!
