WORK - Ace of the trigger
In 1878 in New Mexico, ranch owner John Tunstall hired young bandits to work on his property while teaching them to read and civilize. But when Tunstall is killed in an ambush, the young fugitives decide to avenge him...
Without fear and without reproach, the young wolves of the 80s (Emilio Estevez, Kiefer Sutherland, Lou Diamond Phillips, Charlie Sheen) form a band of ticklish rebels of the trigger in this neo-western with unbridled adventures that had dusted the genus in its time (like The Lost Boys with vampires). And despite an agreed scenario and a telefilm staging, this rereading of Billy the Kid's youth rock ‘n A work of worship forever unsuspecting.
IMAGE - In the west, just dust
Coming from a new 4K scan of the original negative initiated for its 35th anniversary, this UHD Dolby Vision transfer does justice to the crumbling photography of Dean Semler (Dance with wolves).
The compression is higher, the original ratio is recovered (from 1.85 instead of the previous 1.78), the organic patina 35 mm is as homogeneous as it is surprisingly refined (if not during the generic opening with excessive granularity), and the images are richer textured than in the past (woodwork, foliage, clothing) with fine details otherwise more precise (the close-up on the faces).
The dark background with black ink benefits from more legible shades, the light sources use a much bolder high luminance (the flame of candles, fires, the heat of the sun) and the colorimetric palette, dressed in muddy browns and slate blues, displays a raised vibrance (the blue sky) while respecting the deliberate attenuation of hues.
SOUND - In the desert, soft rock makes its law
Featuring the original LPCM 2.0 mix (extract from LaserDisc) that should delight purists, this disc features a « storm » Dolby Atmos, which expands the soundtrack greatly in accordance with the source material (to a few acoustic excesses).
Curiously dynamic and extremely immersive (the exchanges of fire, the environmental atmospheres, the clamours of the crowd), she is armed with a careful directivity (the surrounds and the height scene are of the party), resounding basses even if shallow (the hoofs of the horses at gallops that fall down on the ground, the use of the Gatling), an anachronistic allegreous partition (distributed on all the speakers) and dialogues properly restored on the plant.
CONCLUSION - Who sows the wind harvests the storm
Spectacular story of a bloody page in Western history (Lincoln County War), the first Young Guns pays for the services of a stunning 4K Ultra HD edition (awaited by fans for ages) whose A/V performances slam like a gunshot!
