WORK – Witches and Nazis

Germany, 1945. An American military plane crashes into the Black Forest. Major Johnson sent his best soldiers to pick up the top secret equipment he was carrying. Close to the accident site, they discover hanged Nazis and other corpses with ancient symbols engraved. They are then violently attacked by someone, something...

Little interested in his characters (of the cannon flesh) and only touching his own script (mysticism), this series B opportunistic exploitation (Overlord went there) where Mickey Rourke is only a commercial argument (so a cameo) nevertheless manages to pose an atmosphere in addition to revealing a technical invoice (make-up is successful) far from being naughty.

IMAGE – Let's walk through the woods

Underexposed and depressive, this photograph plunged into a fog of sombritude is in no way attractive despite a solid UHD HDR10+ transfer from a DI 4K.

Digital in its rendering (a capture with RED cameras) and well encoded, the image is as detailed as it can (see the accuracy of the close-up) in view of the low ambient lighting. When present, it should be noted that the light sources shimmer with force (flames, daylight, reflections on Major Johnson's eye mask). Voluntaryly little expressive (green/brown tints), the colorimetric palette sometimes lets itself go with a few exceptions (the « peasant » red, gold compass).

But as I have previously announced, despite a clarification (forced?) of the depth of the blacks (never absolute at the time!), 3/4 of the film is immersed in an artificial shadow that camouflages part of the environments.

SON – The Scrambles of the Night

If it's not very striking shots, the multichannel soundtrack encoded in DTS-HD MA ensures the mission. The dynamics unfold as it should, the bass roar as needed (the inaugural crash), the spatialization is palpable (the whispers of witches regularly emanate from the rear) and the dialogues are easy to grasp.

Dominated by crusts that break at regular intervals the silence of the forest, this soundtrack invokes the activation of a virtualization DSP.

CONCLUSION – The return of Nazisploitation?

As World War II rages, a supernatural enemy who hunts down and kills its prey (as in Predator) makes its appearance in woods where « Walk » Nazis and soldiers of the Airborne Division. And if this fantastic survival isn't as regressive as expected, the 4K Ultra HD presented by Capelight Pictures seems to restore the sinister atmosphere of the place to the best (no Blu-ray for comparison).

Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
