WORK - Submersible Trojan Horse
1942: The United States has just entered the war against the forces of the axis. Captain Mike Dahlgren has command of the S-33, an archaic but formidable submarine. Make-up in German U-Boot to dock the badly damaged U-571 submersible, the mission is to steal its Enigma encryption machine.
While the real facts have been reworked (the British took over the Enigma) to please the American public, this maritime suspense that is particularly haunting at the cast 100% viril rests on solid action scenes and tension at the top. But the lack of psychological depth prevents us from rubbing to the great classics of the genre that are Das Boot and In pursuit of red October.
IMAGE - In deep water
From a 4K restoration carried out in 2023 by Studiochannel from a 4K-16 bit scan of the original negatives supervised by Universal USA, this UHD Dolby Vision transfer (the new calibration was performed by Immagine Ritrovata) with thick hull (an average bitrate of 67.7 Mbps) admirably reproduces the crumbling atmosphere that permeates the weakly lit courtyards of submersibles... And even if the griding mechanics of capture persist (softness here and there, a variable granularity), the aging Blu-ray can be driven out of ballasts.
The framing has been slightly rethought and the geometry corrected, the silver texture 35 mm is more delicately reproduced, the level of detail increases in precision (sweat on the faces, the fibers of the uniforms, the wear of the decorations), and the colorimetric palette with more neutral hues (magenta drift has been revoked) has an unprecedented olive shade (in line with the Second World War) as well as a otherwise healthier carnation.
Thanks to HDR technology, submarines no longer navigate in turbulent waters (see ship architecture)... The contrasts have been rebalanced in order to deploy blacks with the vintage look better held (voluntarily washed if not during the inaugural sequence) and whites with reinforced shine. The high luminances are no longer overexposed (explosion due to a torpedo) and the light sources, which are regularly impressive (an average luminance of 540 cd/m2 with peaks of up to 1142 bits), acquire in intensity (red light, sparks).
SOUND - Underwater Pressure
Awarded by an Oscar (fullly deserved) in 2001, this realistic and ow how anxious soundtrack (in VO as in VF if this is the first one is a little clearer) was unfortunately denied the honours of a remixing Dolby Atmos... That a virtualization DSP can nevertheless substitute for reading sound agitation.
The dynamics are scarcely clear, the immersion is done with maximum authenticity (the noises of the hull are heard all the way in the least corners of the listening room), the scene surrounds sactive dare-dare (the bubbles during immersions, the tintamarre of the machinery, the echo of the bullets during the shooting), the silences are not there, the orchestral music with vibrating heroism permanently envelops, the dialogues show great clarity even when they are (often) murmured and the channel LFE has a just quaking punch (the loads of the underwater grenades, the spin of the propellers).
« You're the skipper now. And the skipper always knows what to do when he does or not. »
CONCLUSION - Hold your breath!
Not concerned about historical truthfulness but extremely spectacular, U-571 is an effective in camera suspense led by Matthew McConaughey whose atmosphere is even more suffocating on 4K Ultra HD support (A/V performances worthy of the robustness and fire power of black boats)!
Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
